I am getting ready to reserve the room for the big game. Please vote in the date poll (1) ASAP so I know which day to reserve.

Is Sept. 29th still the best day for the game?

As far as I know at this time,  yes.  But,  being that I'm looking for work,  etc.,  it's hard to be absolutely committed at this point.

That’s Ryan’s 13th birthday. If he wants to do that on his birthday we’ll be there. If not we’ll be out.

Note that the plan is to give away most of the mechs after the game.

Agreed, and he's the one usually most interested in coming to Battletech, so I give it at least even odds we'll be there.  September is always a nutty month for me (2 immediate family birthdays - 3 if you include August 30th, wedding anniversary, niece birthday, brother-in-law birthday, start of school, fall sports/activities).  That means weekends to do all the extended family stuff etc.  I can put us down for a definite maybe, but if it's a yes it will be at least Ryan and I, possibly Ryan, Timothy and I.

The game will be bumped to the October 20 game day. UC is holding an event on the 29th and bumped us out of the room.

Ryan will be 13.  Is that a game he can attend or not?  I don't want his presence to cause problems.

It will be a relatively long game with more walking than usual, so I guess the question is whether he'll have the patience. I have no problem with kids attending (though UC rules and the insurance require your presence, there can be no minors who are not accompanied by their parent/legal guardian). The room will also be large enough he could go to a corner/side of the room and zone out, if his attention wanes.

I'm not concerned about his attention, more about UC policy as I remember you mentioning that you hadn't expected any minors there.  If it's fine to bring him, we're good.  Thanks for confirming.

Parents and children are fine. The special nightmare is unaccompanied children, that requires FBI background checks and special insurance (not kidding and not doing...). So no minor friends can come along without their parents.

Rules thread link added to OP.

Note: Players will be asked to bring 12-15 ft. tape measures to the game. Steve, you specifically need at least a 15 ft. tape measure for LAM movement. The DC Timber Wolf E player will also need a 15 ft. tape measure for the ER Large Lasers (12.5 feet) and ER ATM missiles (13.5 feet). Other long range weapons will be adequately covered by a 12 ft. tape measure. ER PPCs will fire out to 11.5 feet, Gauss Rifles top out at 11 feet, LRMs will reach out to 10.5 feet, and IS ER Large Lasers only reach out to 9.5 feet.

As a heads up, sometime during or shortly after the game on the 29th, I'll be putting up an RSVP thread for helpers to be available ~9AM on Oct. 20th to help set up the big game.

I finally found the right material to print "paper" maps on. Per Rob, we'll discuss details at the large scale game, so I have linked the discussion thread in the OP.

Rules Variations to be used on the 20th

NOT YET IN EFFECT

Jon, these are up for your thoughts and input.

We're using normal miniatures rules, with the following notes:
1) Linear Movement: Base "hex" length is set at 6" per hex.  Or UP TO 6" of movement per MP; you may move less per MP, and total MP "conserves**".  MP costs scale from there (ie, 2 MP to move through 6" of woods) exactly as in standard Battletech.

2) Turning: It costs to turn up to 60 degrees (1 hex facing) or portion thereof.

3) Slop: There is assumed to be roughly 1/2" of "slop" in movement or turning.  Don't insist on millimetric precision.

4) Line of Sight/Fire (Firing Arcs): The front arc of a Mech is found be measuring forward from the rear hex side arcs.  A Mech which torso twists shifts this arc one hex facing to the side it twists.

5) Line of Sight/Fire (Terrain): this is figured exactly as in standard BattleTech, substituting 6" (or portion thereof) of terrain for 1 hex's worth of terrain.  Ie, 8" of light woods would have the same game effect as 2 hexes of light woods on the tabletop.  Someone whose base is 4" from the edge of the woods would be considered to be "in" the first woods hex, figured exactly as in standard BattleTech.

6) Line of Sight/Fire (Cover): We are NOT using the "true line of sight" rules found in miniatures play.  A Mech's must be within 3" of the terrain to gain partial cover.
-If less than 1/3rd of the Mech is behind the cover, there is no effect.
-If between 1/3rd and 2/3rds of the Mech is behind cover, the Mech gains Partial Cover (+1 to be hit), and the terrain will screen the appropriate side of the Mech (any of the following: both legs, right arm right leg, and right torso, or left arm, left leg, and left torso).  Any shots which hit a covered location hit the terrain instead.  Under no circumstances can partial cover protect the center torso or head.  Any weapons mounted in a location which is covered by Partial Cover cannot fire at a target who takes the Partial Cover modifier.  This is a specific exemption to the rule stating that LoF is drawn from the center of a hex to the center of a hex; if the LoF to a Mech in Partial Cover clips a building, the Mech is not necessarily an illegal target).
-If more than 2/3rds of the Mech is behind cover, it cannot be fired upon.
