Operation ANGEL Summary:
In 3049, the Free World's League's 2nd Marik Militia raided Sarna due to flawed intelligence which underestimated the strength of its defenses.  The defenders of that world, the 3rd FedCom RCT, inflicted heavy losses on the shocked 2nd Marik, forcing the LCCC to order the 12th Atrean Dragoons to extricate the 2nd.  Hot-dropping on the 3rd FedCom barracks, the 12th inflicted severe losses to the 3rd RCT, and the exhausted 3rd allowed the Marik attackers to fall back off-planet.

Hot for revenge, the reconstituted 3rd RCT jumped the border in mid 3052 to attack the 12th Atrean on Varna.  Unfortunately for them, the 12th Atrean wasn't alone on that world.  Through sheer poor luck, the First Orloff Grenadiers had returned from their two-year "show the flag" tour of the independent systems surrounding the Duchy of Orloff two weeks prior to the 3rd arrival in-system.  The 3rd RCT jumped into a hornet's nest, lost a quarter of their BattleMech strength in the opening engagement, sent a panicked message for help back to friendly space, and went to ground in the mountains south of the capital city of Utrecht.  Frequent reconnaissance missions into the mountains from the Orloff Military Academy (intended mostly to give experience to new recruits) have kept the 3rd penned up in the hostile terrain, and the bulk of the Grenadiers and 12th Dragoons have held their positions.  Certain that assistance is on the way, their obvious plan is to intercept any relieving forces when they attempt to link up with the 3rd, and defeat both enemies in detail.

Current Effects in Place:
-All Acquisition TNs are at a +3 penalty to begin the contract; this penalty drops by -1 for each mission victory to a minimum of -1 bonus.
-Mercs do not get Factory Bonuses or access to Unit Market until they have won at least 3 missions in a row
-As contract continues, Allied units become heavier and more plentiful
-High incidence of Solo Missions

2 February, 3053
SOLO MISSION - Midnight - Probe (Attacker)
RESULT: Victory - no effect on contract score
After-Action Report: Numenorean Rangers Alpha Company Midnight lance was tasked with probing the Free Worlds League defenses.  Geared for fighting in less than ideal weather and light conditions, they deployed into a pitch black fog with active probes and a couple of search lights as needed.  They were strung out in a line north to south with the Valkyrie anchoring the north, the Shadow Hawk in the south and the remainder in between when they made contact with a lance of mechs and a lance of armor.  Of the FWL forces, two were deployed in a screen to the south while the rest were traveling together.  All three of the FWL mechs equipped with searchlights had them on, while Midnight kept theirs off.  (Starting deployment)

At the beginning, the Ranger forces paused to determine their opponents’ intent.  As it became clear that the League forces would be pushing directly east into the heart of the Ranger formation, they began to move.  The Shadow Hawk shifted south while the Valkyrie shifted north, taking advantage of the available terrain for cover.  As League forces continued to close and fire began to be exchanged, the Wolfhound moved south to support Sgt Milos’ Shadow Hawk as it made its way west, circling under the advancing mech forces and began closing on the screening Vedettes that had held steady on the western edge of the engagement.  With them they drew the Ostroc and Wolverine while the Griffin and Guillotine worked to engage the Black Knight and Ostwar.  The Saladins continued their slow advance in an effort to bring their large bore weapons to bear.  In a fortunate shot, the Wolfhound took out the Griffin’s searchlight limiting the number of targets the League forces could paint.

Initial focus fire on both sides saw the Ostwar and the Guillotine targeted including a nice grouping of fire by Atayde’s Black Knight including gauss slug and large laser into the Guillotine’s center torso.  As Milos closed on the Vedettes the Rangers changed tactics, bringing their own searchlights to bear highlighting the Vedettes and the Griffin.  This allowed the Rangers to down one of the Vedettes cooking off the AC ammo in the turret as they circled past, keeping on the move to prevent their complete enclosure from the Ostroc, Vedette, Wolverine and Saladins.  The Ranger forces did not come out unscathed as a burst of machinegun fire took out the Shadow Hawk’s searchlight.

In the northern engagement the Guillotine continued to get pummeled but as the Vedette blew in the south, Sgt Gruber in the Ostwar discovered the skill of the Griffin pilot as he kicked him twice in the left leg, nearly stripping it of armor.  This is rapidly followed up by a couple of kicks to the Black Knight’s right leg as the Griffin’s greater mobility allowed it to better position it for attacks.  Attempting to escape, Atayde jumps into the woods on the hill only realizing his mistake as the Griffin lands on the hill above him preparing to kick him twice.  Focus fire from both the Black Knight and Ostwar are not enough to put it down and as the Griffin prepared to kick, Atayde connected with his sword apparently unbalancing the Griffin enough to knock it to the ground.

The Shadow Hawk and Wolfhound continued to run the gauntlet from the south and shifted west north of the Saladins, putting themselves at some risk to the high bore weapons, but managing to avoid being hit by them.  Sgt Milos was able to take out one of the Saladins on the way by, leaving just one to content with.  Focused fire from the Ostwar, Shadow Hawk and Wolfhound finally blew the leg off the Guillotine and destroyed its SRM launcher.  Having already taken significant damage including the loss of its right arm, it was combat ineffective and the pilot punched out as the mech fell to the ground.  Given the volume of damage Atayde had poured into it, he was credited with the kill.  This ended up being the turning point of the battle, though about two thirds of the way through.  At this point both Atayde’s Black Knight and Sgt Gruber’s Ostwar were missing lots of armor and there was internal structure to a leg each, though no damaged components.

Atayde paused to take out one of the Saladin’s with his gauss rifle and extended range large laser, before moving to collect the Guillotine’s pilot.  Recognizing the danger the Griffin represented, focus shifted to dropping the Griffin as the Wolverine closed to support it.  The Ostroc meanwhile had taken up an overwatch position in the south on top of a hill in heavy woods, using his search light to paint targets and taking advantage of the lack of need to move to take shots at things within the range of its extended range large lasers.

The Rangers reacted by advancing on the Ostroc seeking to take it down from its sniper’s nest, the Wolverine falling back to support it, leading to the isolation of the Griffin.  It is a testament to the Griffin pilot’s skill and luck that when the legs were finally blown off and the mech cored, the only armor or structure untouched were pieces of its rear side torsos and a pristine head.  Atayde moved to collect the Griffin pilot as well.

The battle clearly going against the League forces, they began to try and disengage.  Sgt Milos was able to maneuver her Shadow Hawk into a rise just above the Ostroc and poured fire and kicks into it as in moved down the hill through the woods.  As the Ostroc reached the bottom, Milos finished kicking through both side torsos, destroying them and coring the mech.  She recovered the pilot before pressing on.  The final two units were brought down by lucky hits.  As the last Vedette tried to finish disengaging, Milos managed to hit and destroy its engine, leaving it little more than a fairly well armed pillbox.  For the Wolverine, focused fire didn’t initially drop it, but did knock it to the ground as it attempted to escape before a shot from Cochrane’s Wolfhound cooked off the torso mounted SRM ammo and Sgt Gruber in the Ostwar managed to snag the injured pilot.

SOLO MISSION - Ice - Chase (Defender)
RESULT: Victory - no effect on contract score
After-Action Report:LTSG MOON and ICE LANCE were tasked with holding a recently claimed FOB. Point and task being hold the facility but also act as area denial preventing counter attacking elements from pushing past to isolate the FOB and the 3rd RCTs line of retreat. Any elements entering AO were to be chased down as much as possible before coordinating hand off of mission to other elements.

Attackers moved in swiftly catching the still unprepared units out of position. FWLM elements pushed in staggered lines until the 3rds liason ordered the trap sprung. Richmonds warhammer and the liason deployed center board in or near wooded terrain. Ice lead and the remainder of his lance deployed in or around the FOB in hasty semi acceptable lanes of fire.

ICE actual in overwatch called to vacate the center of the battlefield opting to isolate individual units when able forcing the bases natural chokepoints to be the battle points. ICE actual began hurling thunder and nickel down range opening up on a shadowhawk from elevation. Cam footage would show sparks near the ammo bin but failed to ignite ruining instead the lrm20 missile release circuitry.

Faith at this time seeing battle feed data noticed a gap in formation on the left hoping to seize initiative fired jump jets landing in the middle of 1-2 full mech lances. Her sudden appearance achieved just that. One urban mech moving faster than the others ended up square in her sites.. A freak accident and luck followed as a nickel slug bounced off the large bore arm with 0 affect to the left nub arm shattering it fully. The confusion drawing her eyes and crosshairs from right to left she happened to trigger her battery of ML coring through the back of the head. Scratching her head shrugged and began dodging fire as if at a rave party shortly after vaulting back into the base with minimal damage.

Others opted for additional woods cover but immediately found themselves toe to toe with saladins and more shooting point blank ducking in their cockpits wondering with amazement how and why no alarm indicators kicked on.

FWLM units began a full picket charge to thin the Ranger lines which ended up working to great effect. Isolated pockets of fighting commenced the liason and Richmond isolated at the wooded area to the northeast of the FOB. Ice actual isolated to the side and rear ramparts continuing to become Thor God of lightning killing a Maxim that following Salvo, while having some supporting fire from Ruprath in her Javelin. The javelin attempting to light up the semi early morning terrain and vehicles with inferno. Faith holding her own on the left flank drawing units in.

The charge more of a 3 pronged push through the chokepoints devolved into close range brawls for all but the liason and Richmond who fought on the outside.  When the smoke settled durimg this next part of the engagement ICE actual was forced to vacate the confines to the rear of the base to begin commencing in brawlhala throwing kicks and lightning shattering limb and foe under the ferocity few that day would escape.

Lynn and the liason harassed the FWLM command elements outside the wall using their mobility thick foliage to achieve superior positioning buying time and opening holes before they could disengage.

ICE actual would account for 9 kills. Two of which were catastrophic ammo bins, two outright removals of both legs and torso in same motion, removal of the wolverines head from elevation, anothers removal via ppc, marksmanship on 2 others, and the Mexican hat dance on a poor Saladin while avoiding an 80kph charge across open terrain. At point blank a salvo of ppcs caught the charging Vindicator in the CT severely damaging the gyro which the pilot could not keep upright. Ice lance broadcasting shoot it over speaker and com in a puckering moment. Only through force of will target saturation and priority did the Vindicator not die then and there. The Vindicator rising to the occasion backing away unwobbling unflinching further into the base created some distance.

The Hermes and Galleon fled in fear while the FWLM CO attempted to rally fighting ferociously picking up pace once the shock and awe had settled. Richmond firing her jets mounted the ramparts was surprised and followed by the swift agile Marauder. This act rallied a 3 mech firing concave on the isolated warhammer. This lasted through two volleys and was only lessened by Kennedys Javelin jumping into the frey. Forced to handle another threat close by the concave broke leaving just the CO Richmond and the liason.. The valiant attempt failed and morale broke when a ppc strike from Richmond caught the CO. The sudden radio silence recounted by the captured troops told them enough. The battle left vehicles exploded covered in sticky napalm, mechs scattered from catastrophic failures. This took quite a number of FWLM troops realizing they couldn't escape they opted to stay and fight CQC inside the base. Sadly during the fighting Kennedy Ruprath miscalculated her placement siding an already damaged leg toward the shadowhawk who somehow has held its own. This would end up being the mistake FWLM needed as two urban mechs the shadowhawk and still functioning Vindicator lay in wait. Weapons volley was not what ended up doing her in but the swift leg sweep and crush of the leg at the hip that severed and destroyed it putting her on her backside. The following 30 seconds would be one of frustration as she stood legless to fight her foes as her lancemates closed in. As enough enemies fell shadowhawk taking a nickel.slug to a CT ammo bin and the same coring the Vindicator. Volley firing two more times and finally an end in sight the last words were oh no as she fell attempting to stand again neuro feed showed a spike and sudden steady calm. The last thing seen was ICE actual and Carlyle zeroing in on the final standing urban mech near full salvo killing it but only after the ac10 ripped through tagging the bin and laser coring the Javelin. The unconscious Ruprath having no idea what happened as she died from neuro feedback in her sleep in a fireball of what was the Javelin. Her captured pilot however seen exactly what happened as the ejection kicked sending them both into the pavement killing him and further damaging an already dead Ruprath.

Of the enemy forces only the Hermes and Galleon would make it off the field while three pilots would outright escape into the corridors hills and smoke left behind from fighting.

Captured FWLM pilots would recant the horror of seeing an Atlas suddenly lifting into the air raining lightning landing near a friendly mech or vehicle. Moments later  missing varying limbs head arms legs and the hulking mass of smoke that once was a fully functional battlemech slumped over. The anger fear and hopelessness overcame them breaking morale leaving the hunk of mechs they once were on and standing at a Ranger mechs legs asking to be picked up.

William would be seen after the battle standing over first Kennedys ejection pod offering a prayer and then going to each of the other mechs who's pilots had died.

MISSION - Dancer, Freya, Phoenix - Extraction (Attacker)
RESULT: Victory
After-Action Report: Upon hearing of the Rangers landing on Vrana, the 3rd RCT sent a medium company to link up with the Rangers.  Hit by elements of the 12th Atrean en-route, the company - now essentially a lance - broke contact.  Elements of the Rangers moved to rescue the beleaguered lance, and reached the Fedcom position roughly at the same time as the 12th Atrean regained contact, outside a small city.

The Atrean immediately turned and attacked the Rangers, pushing a salient deep into the line of the lighter Ranger Mechs.  Dancer and Phoenix Lances gave ground, under covering fire from Freya on their left flank.  Wolverine Lance deployed in as reinforcements, extending the Ranger right flank and pushing forward.  This had the triple effect of attacking and destroying FWL support structures, creating a safe lane for the Fedcom force to pass behind the Ranger lines to safety, and counterattacked the southern shoulder of the FWL salient.  Under pressure from Freya in the north and Wolverine in the south, the salient collapsed into a double envelopment, and though the members of the 12th Atrean went down hard, they were essentially annihilated.  SGTs Ni Frank of Dancer Lance and Natalie Knightly of Phoenix Lance were both killed in action by a particularly murderous Atrean Awesome pilot, though SGT Knightly returned the favor by burning the pilot out of his cockpit with her final volley of PPC fire.

All assignments made.  Taelor: if you’d rather have HR than Logistics, let me know and I’ll have Midnight swap.

Wayland assignment to Scout. Dancer has techs that can deal with Clantech, so Midnight (1-3) or Freya (4-6).

Thusly, early in the morning of 5 Febrary, 3053, Colonel Atayde was conducting an unscheduled inspection of a security checkpoint along the perimeter of the base, when two mysterious gunmen made what was to be determined later as a hasty and ill-planned assassination attempt.

Emerging seemingly out of the darkness, they hurled a grenade at Kato, who reacted instinctively by dropping behind the checkpoint's sandbags.  A brief firefight ensued.

At home in the darkness and luckily unaffected by the flashbang, Kato drew his weapon and mortally wounded the lead gunman with a headshot (modified roll of 14 vs TN 7 = 7 pilot hits).  Private Apollo Jones was moderately wounded by the second gunman, but his armor took the worst of things (two modified rolls of 9 vs TN 7 = 2 pilot hits each, dropped by 1 each for infantry body armor = 2 total hits), and a final exchange of gunfire dropped the second attacker quite dead (gunman 2 suffers something like 10 hits between Atayde and Pvt Jones's return fire at the end of Round 3).

The base, naturally, goes on full alert in a manner of minutes, but it appears that no further aggressive action is forthcoming.  A few people wonder if this was a DEST operation, but they are quickly disabused of this notion by looking at the grey-black urban camo the attackers were wearing; not DEST sneaksuits.  The attackers seem to be clad entirely in FWL-made clothing and camo, using exclusively Drac-made electronic devices and comms, carrying a few scraps of paper in their pockets with German writing  (advertisements, coupons, etc) on them, and were wielding Capellan-made weapons.

Hat, please apply effects 2 and 3 as listed in your PM.  Contacts are unchanged.  Your suggested Reputation (after) is accepted, with a date of applicability of 1 July, 3053 (it takes a bit for the word to get around). You may share whatever details you want to share with the unit/players in a new thread.

SOLO MISSION - Devil - Hold the Line (Attacker)
RESULT: Victory - no effect on contract score
After-Action Report: Devil lance was deployed to stop or divert a scouting force of mech accompanied by a few heavier elements. FWL forces were deployed between two rivers, and quickly reacted to a push on the far east side where the Goliath had deployed unsupported. As the Goliath just sat there using its long range weapons, LT Rosk lined up a shop which shattered one of the hips and the quad showed its the shift in stability by falling down. Other early fire was mostly missed on both sides, with some hits stripping away armor.

This damage accumulation lead to the first shift in the battle, as FWL forces took down SGT Andrino's Griffin by legging it. This loss prompted Devil lance to begin to consolidate closer, and to try and move so that the AC10s of the Urbanmechs and the Wolverine were not able to focus as well. Devil lance began to withdraw in order, and the FWL Wasps jumped around this withdrawing formation. Two Wasps exploded from damage as Devil lance began to move south, foolishly moving between the lance and where the withdrawal was to take place.

In the most important moment of the battle, the FWL Wolverine jumped by Park's Guillotine and drew fire from multiple units. The Guillotine had been suffering under the Goliath's gauss rifle, and was internal in multiple locations. At the end of the exchange, the Wolverine's leg had been removed and it fell. Simultaneously, XO Lovett had advanced on the Urbanmechs which were slowly coming over the southeastern mountain. Multiple weapon hits got past the center torso and resulted in two engine hits.

After this critical moment which lead to the loss the a large amount of FWL firepower, the FWL Crusader made a fatal mistake. While it had been staying at range hitting the liaison with LRM fire (eventually resulting in the loss of both arms of the Jagermech) it decided instead of going upstream for an easy river crossing decided to wade through the mountainous river canyon to reach Devil lance. This slowed what firepower it was able to bring to bear, and allowed LT Rosk to jump and disable a Galleon while Park finished the damaged Urbanmech off. These mounting losses for the FWL, along with the armless Jagermech of the liaison charging under the Goliath's guns showing the continued weakness of the mech lead to a quick negotiated FWL withdrawal and left Devil Lance holding the battlefield.

MISSION - Skaraborg, Dragon, Reaper - Base Attack (Defender)
RESULT: Victory - contract score increased to 4/4
After-Action Report:  While the 12th Atrean ranged between the Ranger and 3rd Fedcom RCT positions as a blocking force, nothing was heard of the 1st Orloff Grenadiers, and their position was unknown.  Until the position of their 2nd battalion, at least, suddenly became known on the morning of 13 February, emerging from a valley fog less than 10 minutes away from the Ranger cantonment.  The surprise attack caught the Rangers off-guard, and they were barely able to scramble a defensive force with whomever was at the base.  Worse, support units and technical groups, making their routine stopovers to pick up daily supplies from stockpile, were exposed in the action.

A hasty defense was thrown together; Skaraborgs assault lance held the center position around the defense towers, with Reaper to the south and Dragon to the north, and with Midnight lance and a platoon of Maxims rushing the battlefield as reinforcements.  The heavy defensive walls of the Ranger base funneled many of the Orloff forces towards the defense towers and Skaraborg, and the Orloff commander weighted their attack to the south, while lighter FWL forces tried to break through in the north.  A grinding battle of attrition ensued, with Reaper and Skaraborg bending and falling back against the sheer weight of FWL metal in the south.  Dragon Lance successfully bogged down the faster FWL elements in the north, long enough for Midnight to arrive and turn the tide there.  A bare handful of FWL Mechs broke through, and while Midnight's Wolfhound was destroyed by a FWL Hermes, the damage to structures and support forces was kept to a minimum.  The FWL attack eventually petered out, and the Orloff Grenadiers fell back voluntarily and in good order.  Casualties were high on both sides; the Grenadier had lost some three lances of Mechs and two vehicle platoons, while the Rangers lost only two (albeit with another 6 Mechs crippled). Several Techs were killed with they were caught in a stray ASF strafing run while trying to board Maxims to escape; Dragon, Dancer, and Ice Lances all lost personnel that would seriously impact their ability to maintain their units for the remainder of Operation ANGEL.

SOLO MISSION - Dancer - Recon Raid (Attacker)
RESULT: Victory - no effect on contract score
After-Action Report: Ranger Command had received reports of suspicious activity near a river and large lake in sector 73.  Dancer Lance volunteered to check it out and took liaison Wajeeha Radi and her Firestarter along for the ride.  Dancer Lance arrived in sector 73 around 0200 with heavy cloud cover in the area that reminded them of a West Virginia coal mine when the lights went out.  Mag and infrared readings showed 2 lances in immediate vicinity and another lance nearby.

Dancer took a 2-pronged approach into the area with faster elements to the west and the rest with liaison in the center/east.  The center group took heavy fire as Dancer’s Phoenix Hawk and Dragonfly flanked the opposition.  Unfortunately, the flanking mechs attracted the attention of the enemy hunter/killers: a pair of upgraded Phoenix Hawks and a Wasp.  Those 5 mechs engaged in a fierce firefight around a small lake in southwest corner of the sector.  The Wasp was crippled and left on a small island.  The 2 PHawks cornered the Dragonfly as it attempted to obtain sensor readings of the area.  The Dancer Marauder was able to occasionally lend its spotlight to that small battle from half a klik away while playing a game of cat and mouse with an Urbanmech, Hunchback and Hermes.  The Gladiator and Firestarter engaged the enemy Trebuchet and Griffin.  The Free Worlds Griffin was getting the better of the Firestarter, kicking it in each leg and knocking it down twice.  Luck finally turned when the Gladiator hit the Griffin with 4 medium lasers, knocking the Griffin over and causing the pilot to lose consciousness, enabling the badly shaken liaison to disengage.  Back by the lake, Dancer One was able to destroy one of the Phoenix Hawks and capture its pilot Zia Kazim, but could not shake the pursuit of the other Hawk as he met up with the rest of the lance.  The Dragonfly made a successful escape of the area while Dancer One rejoined the lance and the Dancers left the battle disappearing into the woods.

Damage was surprisingly light to moderate but alarmingly concentrated in the mechs’ legs.  Final tally: 1 enemy mech destroyed, 3 crippled; one enemy pilot captured, one stranded on an island in the lake; no Dancer losses and liaison needing a vacation.  If the cloud bank had blown away the results could have been far worse.

SOLO MISSION - Freya - Recon Raid (Attacker)
RESULT: Victory - no effect on contract score
After-Action Report: For some time after their aborted attempt to attack the Ranger cantonment in February, FWL forces remained quiet.  After nearly two months of inconsequential skirmishes and marches and counter-marches, the Rangers were no closer to breaking the blockade on the hemmed-in 3rd FedCom RCT.  Several lances were dispatched on reconnaissance missions into known hostile space to either provoke a reaction, or to find out where the primary body of FWL troops was located.

Immediately prior to reaching their assigned sector, Freya Lance stumbled across a pair of Atrean Dragoon lances lying doggo.  Freya's assigned liaison had misinterpreted a movement order, and found himself isolated on the wrong side of a river along with his bodyguard unit, SGT Dorenda Fore.  While the remainder of Freya Lance fought a series of mobile, slashing actions on the west side of the river, SGT Fore fought a bodyguard action alone against a heavy lance out to kill the liaison.  Taking heavy damage, her success remained in doubt until LT Hartmann and SGT Montgomery forded the river and took the surviving heavy Mechs in the flank.  As this combat died down, FWL reinforcements began entering the area.  LT Hartmann ordered LTJG Vicious and her LAM to quickly complete the reconnaissance objective, and the entire unit fell back in good order before any further FWL reinforcements could arrive.

MISSION - Crusher, Wolverine, Bright - Allied Traitors
RESULT: Victory - no effect on contract score
After-Action Report:  Instructed to rendezvous with a hot-dropping Davion reinforcement group, the Rangers were shocked to discover themselves lashed with targeting systems and hostile intent. The Davion forces lit off their targeting systems a hair too early for effective fire, and while the ambush was tactically spoiled, the Rangers still had to react to an enemy that was ready for a fight and who were deployed in a giant C around a large lake, ready to envelop and annihilate the Ranger marching column.

The Rangers reacted superbly. They formed from a marching column to a line of battle, and isolated the southern flank of the Davion "C", destroying a medium lance and a pair of assault tanks in detail, then rotated north to face the remainder of the Davion force.  Several Ranger Mechs took serious damage, but none were actively destroyed, in the engagement.  Bereft of their superior position, the Davion forces fought well, employing a significant firebase to the north, and a maneuver element along the north edge of the large lake which kept the Rangers from overwhelming them with a frontal attack.  Eventually, the Rangers used their superior numbers to pin the maneuver element in place, while an ad hoc lance of striker Mechs from Ice and Crusher Lances moved north to flank and flush the Davion base of fire group.  The battle collapsed into a free-for-all almost instantly once that fell, with individual Davion Mechs being run down and destroyed.  Fewer than four Davion Mechs would be able to fall back and melt away into the wilderness, with their ultimate fate unknown.

In the aftermath of the attack, it was discovered (when two MechWarriors captured by Crusher Lance committed suicide with hidden poison capsules) that the attackers were not Davion regular units, but a MIIO strike force, dispatched to attack the Rangers for reasons that remain unclear. The two leading theories are that the strike was supposed to coincide with the attempted decapitation attempt on the Rangers' CO, Col Atayde, but was delayed in transit, and that elements in the Federated Commonwealth had finally learned of the theft of Clan salvage while the Rangers were under FedCom contract on Somerset and were on a search-and-seizure mission. Unit inquiries to MIIO representatives went unanswered, but FedCom liaisons were clearly and genuinely horrified to learn of the attack and insisted that the attack was not representative of Davion policy towards the Rangers, and that the rescue mission of the 3rd FedCom RCT was still in place.  To that end, any and all salvage picked up by Ranger pilots during the attack would remain the property of the Rangers and not affect contract salvage in any way.

MISSION - Midnight, Devil, Ice - Breakthrough (Attacker)
RESULT: Loss - contract score is 4/6
After-Action Report: Attempted to break through Orloff Grenadiers lines to relieve the 3rd FedCom RCT.  Mission canceled due to inclement weather (Heavy Fog, Torrential Downpour, F4 Tornado) making it impossible to complete the breakthrough inside the time allowance.

6 June, 3053
MISSION - Midnight, Devil, Skaraborg - DropShip Assault (Attacker)
RESULT: Victory - contract score raised to 6/8
After-Action Report: The Orloff Grenadiers attempted a strategic outflanking movement, trying to prevent a clear movement corridor between the 3rd RCT forces and the Rangers, by forcing the Rangers out of position to cover themselves.  However, in a moment of fortunate circumstance, a routine patrol by the 3rd RCT had gotten lost, witnessing the Orloff Overlord DropShip start its touchdown procedure.  With the location of the DropShip known, and wanting to strike the beachhead before any reinforcement arrived, the Rangers and 3rd RCT forces which had linked up with the Rangers over the previous days launched a hasty attack on the Orloff position.

Seeing the incoming forces, the Orloff commander immediately realized that their position was untenable without the element of strategic surprise, and began reboarding her forces as quickly as possible.  However, a tank throwing its tread on the bay door ramp would ensure that the Overlord would be unable to finish boarding before the attack force arrived.  Attacking in a broad crescent, the FedCom and Ranger forces fought a straightforward frontal assault, grinding the Orloff forces backwards.  Even the DropShip's impressive firepower added to the battle failed to hold back the incoming forces.  Overwhelming the defenders and concentrating fire, the Rangers savaged the Overlord, eventually damaging the transit drive so severely that the Overlord's captain was forced to cut power and surrender.  With their retreat now impossible, the few remining Orloff forces surrendered.  Ranger damage was heavy, with Midnight Lance in particular suffering the complete loss of two Mechs, both others crippled, and SGT Anthony Gruber killed in action when the head was blown off of his Mech.

6 June, 3053
SOLO MISSION - Midnight - Chase (Attacker)
RESULT: Victory
After-Action Report: Midnight and attached liaison were deployed to scout south of a town that already had been the site of previous battles.  By luck or given the importance of what lay south of the town, a reinforced company of mechs were in the northern section the city and sensors picked up a mixed lance of mechs and tanks heading north just outside the target zone.  Sgt. Milos used her Shadow Hawk's searchlight early as the Rangers started their push south, but quickly turned it off after the League forces swarmed forward doing significant damage to both her Shadow Hawk and Sgt. Cochrane's Wolfhound.  The Wolfhound and liaison's Valkyrie attempted to skirt along the eastern edge of the city, but League forces fell back keeping contact with the Rangers lead element.  Having barely made it into the city, Cochrane was suddenly dealing with excessive heat as a skilled or lucky shot (double snake eyes TACed CT with 2 engine hits) from a Wasp put his operational status in doubt.  Colonel Atayde pulled the other Ranger units west drawing the majority of the forces with them, breaking the larger battle into smaller fights and gets there attention by cleaving off the left torso of the Champion, destroying its engine and rendering it combat ineffective.  At roughly the same time Sgt. von Hoff kicked the leg off the Hermes, limiting but not eliminating its threat.

As the Wolfhound and Valkyrie reach the southern side of the town they were met by a Crab and 3 Saracen Hover Tanks who blocked their progress as stepping out of the cover of the  town would have meant being caught in the open between 2 lances and so pushed the pair west.  A lucky shot from Cochrane's Wolfhound cooked off AMS ammo in the torso, destroying the torso, but not the Mech.  Atayde takes off the leg of a Firestarter in the NW corner of the suburbs, but while down, isn't out.  Not long after the Ostwar finished off the Firestarter.  The fire of the Rangers finally starts paying more dividends as Milos kills the Hermes and Atayde cleaves off the Phoenix Hawk 3S' right torso, shutting it down.

The battle has collapsed to the west side of the town as the reinforcements reach just outside the SW corner of the town.  Milos destroys a Locust and von Hoff takes the leg off a Stinger.  Attempting to push towards their objective, Atayde exits the town pushing south into the teeth of the reinforcement lance.  While the point blank range nullified the tanks LRMs, they were well positioned for their SRMs.  He does significant damage to the Crab and hits a tank with his sword, but just cleaves off armor, with no other appreciable effect.  The Valkyrie had moved to the woods to the SW of the town as the Wolfhound took more engine damage from the Hermes II, disabling it and taking a gyro hit bringing it to the ground.  At the same time Milos leaped atop a building and kicked the head off one of the Phoenix Hawk while von Hoff killed one of the Stingers.

Given the significantly weakened Ranger forces, the League forces felt comfortable enough to start firing at the Valkyrie.  They were forced to split their forces to deal with both the Black Knight and the Valkyrie as they watched the trailing Ostwar.  Atayde's Black Knight finally took down the Crab, blowing off its head with a gauss rifle at roughly the same time that von Hoff's Ostwar blew the head off a Wasp.  While not targeting the head and while effective at dropping the opponents, it became clear that no quarter would be given to the Ranger pilots should they find themselves destroyed.  The Black Knight fought south with a Stinger, Firestarter and Locust maintaining contact with the Tanks and Hermes II in pursuit of the Valkyrie.  The Ostwar is able to destroy the Spider with the last of the SRM ammo and leg a Wasp, giving clear space to run and help support the Black Knight, given the superior range the Clan ER LLs provided.  The Black Knight is able to severely damage the Locust including legging it, with the Ostwar finishing it off as it passed it, limping along with multiple actuators destroyed in its right leg.  It is a testament to von Hoff's skill that she was able to keep it upright.

The Firestarter meanwhile has been harrying the Ostwar, destroying the last two actuators in the right leg and savaging it.  The Ostwar manages to stay upright jumping into the woods on the SE edge of the operational zone and sustains withering fire from the two remaining tanks and the Firestarter who continues to kick the Ostwar.  Just before the end von Hoff maneuvers to present her left leg to the Firestarter which still had vestiges of armor.  Despite more fire and getting kicked in the left leg, she is able to keep the mech upright and moves out of the active operational area, the Rangers' newest Ace pilot.

30 August, 3053
MISSION - Dancer, Phoenix, Ice - Ally Evacuation (Defender)
RESULT:
After-Action Report:  With the capture or destruction of two battalions of material and a DropShip, the Orloff Grenadiers pulled themselves from the campaign, leaving the bulk of operations to the 12th Dragoons.  The Dragoons were not eager to tangle with the Rangers following their failed assault on the Ranger cantonment, and all operations but basic and occasionally patrols had essentially ceased by the end of July.  The FedCom forces awaited onplanet for their transportation offworld, and in mid August, the relief JumpShips finally arrived in-system.  Most of the evacuation went smoothly, and it was only at the very last, when most 3rd RCT forces were offworld, did the Dragoons attempt one final, bitter, strike at the retreating FedCom forces, trying to even the score for the Grenadiers' DropShip.
