"In Transit"
In Transit, Overlord
Vanra System
September 2, 3053

Kato calls in all lance leaders and senior officers for a briefing.  While he’d already shared with the unit that the next stop was Capella, it was time for more details.  Once everyone is seated, he begins.
“Good afternoon.  I wanted to provide additional details on what to expect over the next few months.  In-transit time is as normal.  Things will be different once we reach Capella.”

He pulls up a display with planned jump path including recharge times and times in systems.  “We’re currently due to arrive on the ground in Capella on October 13th, approximately 10:00 hours.  I’m not anticipating any combat duty or hazards, so this effectively is a paid three-month vacation with shore leave and some privileges, but with restrictions.  The good news is we’ll have access to Ceres Metals Industries facilities while on planet for repairs and modifications at standard rates.  Further, we’ll be staying at my future estate currently managed by my grandfather. There’s easily enough room to accommodate all officers present and with room to spare.  There are spare barracks that can accommodate the majority of those who want to get off the dropship and enough room here to cycle in groups to the estate proper.  The number will shrink as other guests and more security personnel arrive, but I expect we should be good for two to three dozen.  The manor will be at least slightly more comfortable than the bunks we sleep in here on ship,” the understatement generating the expected chuckles.  “Food and the rest will be of similar quality.”  He lets the good news settle in before moving on.

“There are restrictions though we will be expected to conform to.  Romano’s tenure is recently ended.  She drove a lot of paranoia and mistrust from the populace through the ranks to the highest levels.  Justin Allard-Liao’s betrayal of the Confederation and the loss of the St. Ives Commonality is too recent to be ignored.  Anyone with even a whiff of ties or sympathies to the Federated Suns is considered suspect, including myself.  Chancellor Sun Tzu hasn’t been in charge long enough to make substantial changes to that assuming he’s inclined to.  To say there’s a certain amount of xenophobia baked into the current culture would be an understatement.  So, because of that, all non-citizens will be given a security detail for their protection, and before people get too wound up about it, this includes Erin Mae (his wife).  It’s been made clear to me that the security detail is non-negotiable.  If you don’t want one, you’ll need to stay on ship which by extension means no factory access.  It is my understanding that I will not require one, but if it is at all suggested I will accept it.  This will get tighter and less comfortable as the Master of Ceremonies arrives.  I expect it to be the Duke of Capella and as the ruler of Capella and the local Diem.”

“I’ve served now with most of you for years.  Despite what you may feel towards the Confederation, I would still consider it an honor to have you there at my investiture as a show of support.”  He looks over at Col. Mudd.  “I have done what I can to ensure your safety and that of all the others under my command.  I believe it should be enough, but it’s outside of my control.”  He turns and takes back in the table at large.  “I will certainly understand if concerns for your own safety are strong enough to decline my invitation.  No explanation is needed, and I will not think less of you for doing so.  Still, I hope you make it.”

“Once on the ground we’ll be given the itinerary of events.  I expect the investiture proper to take place sometime in November.  The goal then is to look at contracts at the beginning of December as soon as my contract with the Rangers ends.  So.  Questions, comments?”

Moon checks the room before speaking up.

"Hell as long as the beds are decent and the food better I can look forward to this."

Pausing for a seconds for good humor and smiles.

"Once we are on planet we can roam about to try food and what not right? What type of entertainment and bars can we hop around at? I'm not the only one who is curious here I'm certain."

Taking a second to think and more serious tone.

"As far as the security details go a few things. Lt Mudd I would assume has extra security since he was addressed with concern? Out of concern A suggestion possibly is to to stay if he felt at risk on the jumpship. Just tossing it out there. Are we permitted to be armed and I assume we're allowed free roam to move in groups and not to be isolated?"

"Expect at least a couple of individuals with each group that goes out, so a group of 6 will likely have 2 as would a single individual.  From that perspective you may find it more comfortable traveling together.  Expect that as we get close to the investiture security will tighten and we will likely need to remain locked down at the manor until it's over.  Based on what I know now, that should be just a day or two.  As for Colonel Mudd, if he wishes to stay on board the jumpship or one of the dropships, he is certainly welcome to do so.  I would hope he will feel comfortable enough taking me up on the invitation to be planet side."

"As for entertainment and bars, you are welcome to look up the information on Ceres City.  This will in fact be my first time on planet in about 30 years, and I doubt you want the entertainment venues 7-year-old me remembers."

Kato considers.  "In terms of being armed, sidearm and/or knife is probably ok, though may be considered 'rude' in some areas.  You shouldn't need them at the estate, but again, until security tightens, they're probably ok."

"Other questions?"

I look forward to seeing the planet, and not from behind the cockpit of a mech. Thank you for this opportunity on my first visit to the Confederation. While the security may be tiresome, I understand the need for it.

Hitzig chimes in with an unexpected concern.

"Since we are here, in an area with high amounts of danger to the unit, with your attempted assassination and our good XOs disdain with the Commandos, I will be taking use of the factory, but staying near the ship, to ensure no forms of sabotage or attacks can occur to either our enlisted or our property. I hope everything goes well, but we cannot be too lax while here."

"On that note just a chime in here. Will we have any of our mechs deployed to the ceremony just in case or are they all confined to the ship and factory.  I will have four units up and ready at just about all times if needed."

"Your concern is noted, Lt. Hitzig, though I believe the risk is overstated.  In any case, it's been addressed.  Major Bray?"

Major Amy Bray was 2nd Battalion's commander, a tactical genius and an elite marksman.  Had she been a Mechwarrior there's a good chance she'd be competing for the top job in the Rangers rather than leading the support elements.  In her late 30s and exceedingly professional, she's easy enough to get along with if you haven't disappointed her.  Her one glaring flaw if you want to call it that, is a complete lack of sense of humor.  "While on planet the dropships will be tightly monitored and locked tight except at designated times for the loading or unloading of assets or cargo.  At least one squad of Captain Ramage's battle armor and a full platoon of my infantry will be on duty at all times, rotating out for R&R at the Colonel's request.  Key ship personnel as well as a few select others will be included in security monitoring as well.  Threat assessment has been completed and will be updated regularly to reflect status changes on the ground especially as it relates to Colonels Atayde and Mudd having recent or credible threats against them, Colonel Atayde's request notwithstanding.  No offense sir."

"None taken, Major.  Continue."

Bray nods once and then wraps up.  "We've got operational security for the dropships covered and will follow strict protocols for hostile world deployment even though Capella is considered friendly.  If you identify any flaws in our security procedures, don't hesitate to alert the duty officer immediately, then follow up with me.  I pay generous bounties to those who ID flaws and gaps in security, not just for the protection of military personnel and equipment, but the safety of the non-combatants we have as well.  Colonel Atayde's promised me three more platoons of battle armor as soon as he can lay hands on it which will close the final gaps.  Respectfully, I don't recommend passing up on the opportunity to enjoy some R&R to help babysit the ships.  That's our job."

She glances back at Kato who nods and takes back the floor.  "To answer your question, Captain, we do not have permission to disembark our mechs for anything other than transport to and from Ceres Metal Industries.  That will be done on a strict schedule with confirmation that the weapons are powered down and that it's techs rather than Mechwarriors who are moving them.  Given how much the Confederation lost in the last Succession War, I can't say I blame them for their caution.  To that point," he says addressing all those assembled.  "Please submit to me a list of those 'Mechs that you want sent to the factory for repair or refit so that we can work with CMI to accommodate as many requests as possible."

"What else?"

"Submission already pending. Easy and efficient. Time for some R&R"

Hitzig will allow the ceremony to go on without a hitch while trying to ease her worries. Although the worry remains, she will place her trust in your current judgement.

Sensing Hitzig's acceptance even if reluctantly given, Kato shifts his attention back to the room as a whole ready for other questions or concerns.  When no more come, he ends the meeting.

"Made Welcome"
Spaceport, Ceres City
Capella
October 13, 3053

The trip from Vanra to Capella is uneventful.  Atayde answered and addressed as many of the questions and concerns as he could before arrival.  The Rangers depart the dropship to mild weather, bright sun, and clear skies.  Kato’s delegation includes his family, the lance leaders, Major Amy Bray, Captain Andromeda Clark, Captain Marika Duncan, Captain Yennifer Ramage, as well as Lieutenants Kristin Crawford and Maria Marsala, each representing their own commands.  On the tarmac an honor guard of battalion strength is arranged, dress uniforms crisp for the infantry which number two companies, plus a company of armor and a lance of ‘Mechs.  The heavy mech lance is formidable consisting of a Highlander, two Marauders and an Ostroc, but they are also clearly older models without use of recovered technology. Waiting in a position of honor is an older Chinese gentleman, with silver hair and dressed in formal robes, an aide and personal guard standing behind him.  As Kato leads the Ranger delegation forward, the old man’s stoic mask drops, and he smiles at his grandson.  Kato offers his grandfather a formal and deeply respectful greeting, then adds in English, “Grandfather, I humbly present to you the officer corps of the Numenorean Rangers.  They are men and women I have found worthy to stand at my side in battle and in friendship.”

He turns to address his companions.  “Rangers, I have the honor of introducing my grandfather, Sheng Shonso of Llagarres and Sheng Mandrinn of Ceres City, Kasei Atayde.”  His grandfather bows his head slightly in acknowledgement then addresses the assembled in English.  “Kato, I welcome you home to Capella as a worthy warrior, upstanding citizen, honorable man, and my heir.  You and your officers are to be my honored guests for your stay.  Your safety is of great importance and so my men will see to it personally.  Please, let us adjourn to my estates where you may be made comfortable.”  All of the individuals departing with the Rangers including Kato’s wife Erin Mae and their two small children are led to a set of waiting limos.  With the formalities complete, Kasei speaks to Kato and family in Mandarin, covering more mundane topics and welcomes in what is surely his preferred tongue.  Watching the family walk off, it is clear to anyone looking that Erin Mae is pregnant again, late in her second trimester.  The family joins Kato’s grandfather in one limo as the rest of the Rangers are escorted to others, the security details making themselves known with a respectful greeting in English, followed by a gesture and the appropriate “Sir?” or “Ma’am?”.  In short order, the convoy is underway.

It takes less than an hour to reach the estate.  The bustle of the spaceport, industrial center and city left behind shortly before arriving.  The surrounding area and most of the estate grounds are wooded in rolling hills, a single tall peak stretching up behind it.  The Manor House is Siheyuan in style, with a large central courtyard, with other connected buildings and corresponding courtyards.  There are similarly styled structures that house the Atayde Guard, the number concealed by the terrain.  At a quick guess at least a company, probably substantially more, but hard to determine from the road in.  The front of the structure is impressive with a large front wooden gate and two impressive stone lions protecting it in traditional Chinese fashion.  It appears there’s a gatekeeper’s room just off the gate, indicating the size and importance of the estate.  Once through you pass the spirit screen and enter a large central outer courtyard through a smaller gate.  The courtyard has gardens and walkways.  Grandfather pauses and addresses the Rangers again in English.  “Rooms have been prepared for you in both the east and west residences.  You will be shown the way to them.  I grant you time to refresh yourselves before lunch.”  Unless he receives any questions, he leads Kato and his family into the building on the north side of the courtyard, the discussions again reverting immediately to Mandarin.

The rooms provided are spacious and extremely comfortable.  The décor is primarily Chinese, though accents of other cultures are mixed in where it does not interfere with or even enhances the feng shui.  Looking out the windows onto the courtyard from the upper floors, it is easy to discover that beyond the building that Kato’s grandfather led them into is an inner courtyard and more private residences.

After refreshing themselves and perhaps strolling the outer courtyard, the Rangers discover that lunch is informal, with Shonso Atayde not present.  Kato explains that preparations are being made for a formal welcome dinner, and they should dress appropriately.  That evening a luxurious dinner is laid out comprised of local dishes and delicacies as well as some that many will recognize as Kato’s favorites.  It is here that the Rangers are once again and formally welcomed to the home of the Mandrinn of Ceres City.  In so doing, it is clear that this will be Kato’s home once invested.  Those present outside of the Rangers default to Mandarin except when addressing them, though take no affront to being addressed in English and switching appropriately.  Unlike with Kato and his family, the English spoken is accented, from just slightly with Kasei to more heavily with some of the others.  Once the meal has concluded and tea served the itinerary is shared.  Members of Kato’s father’s family, the Yamamoris will be arriving at the end of the month.  An honored guest will arrive on November 9th, though Kasei doesn’t clarify who this is and politely deflects any inquiries into their identity.  The Master of Ceremonies will arrive on November 14th with the investiture planned for November 16th.  He understands that they will be seeking a new contract in December, looking at Kato as he says this, and receiving a nod in confirmation offers his hope for fortune smiling and receiving a suitable one quickly.

After lunch, Rosk will make inquiries of the staff about acquiring some nicer culturally appropriate jackets and outfits for wear while here, as well as some art supplies.

The staff is pleased with the request and a older tailor is rapidly presented.  An expert at his craft he eyes Rosk, calls something to an assistant in Mandarin who scurries away and comes back with a few jackets and a pin cushion.  With only the barest effort to request permission, he sweeps one of the jackets on Rosk as nimble fingers quickly add pins for a perfect fit.  Nodding he removes the jacket almost as quickly.  This process is repeated with a few other garments before a list of options is rattled off for his approval and then they vanish to begin the work.

Not long after, the steward arrives and after consulting with Rosk on specifics notes that they have at least much of what he has requested and will make that available to him.  Within the hour he has what he needs.  A few hours later the assistant finds Rosk and presents him with a stack of freshly pressed clothes with a promise that others await him in his room.

Rosk attends the formal dinner in full kimono, black in color with a deep red obi.  This is a change as most times he is in a jumpsuit or cooling vest.

"At Loose Ends"
Manor House, Outskirts of Ceres City & Ceres City
Capella
October 14 - 29, 3053

Early on the 14th, Kato and those Rangers who wish to go with him are shuttled down to the Ceres Metal Industries complex.  Kato was granted an appointment with the head of Ceres Metal Industries during his stay.  He was asked to invite any from his command who are interested in making use of the facilities to come and handle things personally.  Before leaving the estate you are informed that as Capella is the heart of the Confederation, the Han culture is dominant and many locals who are of fairer stock, wear black wigs to blend in.  Those who sport other hair colors are viewed as seeking attention or clearly foreigners.  Rangers who have something other than black hair are encouraged to wear a wig which will be provided, so as not to draw undo attention or offend local sensibilities.

The trip to Ceres is relatively short, and the reactions to Rangers spotting non-black hair color is as described.  After a formal meet and greet with the CEO, they are passed off to a vice president well versed in company and military history.  She explains that Ceres Metals was one of the first developers of BattleMech technology, a fact she expects many who are present to be aware of.  What they may not be aware of is that Ceres originally produced jumpships and dropships, though most of those manufacturing centers were in the original Terran Hegemony and the Amaris Civil War and early Succession Wars destroyed them.  Since then, Ceres Metal Industries has evolved into a massive manufacturer of civilian and military equipment with more than 500 facilities on over 100 worlds, producing all types of military hardware.  She continues providing interesting bits of history and information about the facilities as you move about and interact with some of the folks there.  The executives are polite, the engineers knowledgeable, and the security details attentive as the walking tour moves purposefully through the different buildings and showcases.  Time is set aside to sign up for space, with forms to fill out for the work to be done.  Once complete the group moves on to the Ceres City tour.

The city itself is a thriving metropolis, certainly not as large as some, but well developed and not showing signs of the predations of the various Successions Wars since the fall of the Star League.  It includes numerous stops at famous gardens, monuments highlighting the accomplishments of citizens and various sacrifices for the good of the Confederation.  Lunch is taken at a fine restaurant with a large private room holding all the participants.  The schedule is tight and so doesn’t permit wandering off or detours, though you are offered an opportunity to put in a request for other places you would like to see, and they will do their best to accommodate you.  Interactions with the citizenry in general is almost non-existent given the size and security presence of your group, citizens defer to your passage.  Though the tour certainly puts the city’s best foot forward, it is clear that not all is as well as it once was.  Defenses for the city have been improved over the past two decades, using up valuable space and resources that would have been devoted to other projects.  An acknowledgement that this once interior planet is now a border world, and vulnerable.

-----------

Exploring the estate reveals that the grounds are covered with interlocking buildings and courtyards as well as a large garden on the east side.  The further north in the manor one goes, the more private the space is, with the furthest northern sections relegated to Kasei, Kato, and family.  Those spaces are not open to non-family members or close servants.  Some areas are reserved for more important guests, though in general the Rangers have the freedom to go where they please save for those areas that are restricted and under guard.  It is also not possible to leave the estate without a security detail to accompany the group, though otherwise within the walls of the estate, no security detail is required.

Klaus Breisacher for one spends a fair amount of time off the estate proper, sampling the local cuisine and following up on places highlighted by the tour of Ceres city.  He tours local gardens with those inclined to get out and stretch their legs with the minder translating between the group he is with and the horticulturalists.  Expressing an interest in native trees, he is provided descriptions and a list of places to go to view them, acquiring wood block samples of them to carve later.  Those who’ve visited Klaus in his quarters have seen numerous knives of different styles, each with a handle carved from one of the woods taken from the planet.

He along with others make periodic visits to Ceres to view progress on the work that’s being done.  Typically, this is followed by looking for local breweries.  It’s a good way to celebrate the work that’s going well or to salve the nerves for those whose work isn’t.  William Moon is one of Klaus’ regular companions, anxious to see how the work is going and eager to sample the various brews that Klaus is discovering.

-----------
Kato is seen at multiple times over the next couple of weeks deep in conversation with individuals clearly members of the Zang shu zhe and Zang shu cheng branches of the Huang Di Yi Zhi.  The conversations are all in Mandarin and though the tenor of the discussions seem conversational, the astute realize the probing and interrogational nature of the talks.  At times Erin Mae is with them, and she receives at least as much attention in the discussions as Kato does.  Roughly halfway through one discussion period it is clear the questioning has gotten to her, and she begs off for a short break which the agents grant her.  Kato joins her and it is possible to eavesdrop on the conversation should you be so inclined.

“They ask the same questions over and over, differently perhaps, but often leading back to the same themes.  Why?  Haven’t I already answered them enough?”  She speaks in English, clearly upset.  “I’ve studied the philosophies, I’ve learned if not completely mastered the language, I understand the importance, I do!”

Kato’s words are calm and soothing.  “These examinations are common for those who are still in their studies. You”

“But when will I be DONE with the studies?!?” she snaps back, certainly outside her typical norms.

“After achieving your citizenship, the likelihood of an examination greatly decreases unless one gives them reason for an examination.”  He tries a slightly different tact, “Ài qī (beloved wife), they will see the truth of your spirit.  Fàng xīn (don’t worry), you have nothing to fear.  I too am being examined.  We’ll get through this together.”

His words calm her, and her voice is softer, “We won’t be here long enough for me to earn my citizenship.  What then?”

Kato considers.  “Well, you and the kids could stay.  We could catch up after the next contract or so.”

Erin Mae shakes her head. “No Kato.  We’re in this together.  We’ll find that opportunity later.”  He bows his head until his forehead rests against hers and they fall into silence.

Temporarily at loose ends the agents consider those others in the nearby area.  “Are any of you interested in discussions of philosophy?  It is an interesting and engaging way to pass the time.”

It's been more than a week since arrival and Kato excuses himself from his family and seeks out Kronwall after one of the meals.  "You seem more out of sort than usual Erik, and it's not because the Capellans are your sworn enemy.  What's on your mind?"

Kronwall sighs and attempts to relax.  Capella is a lot of ways environmentally like Rasalhague and it's feeling weird to be the one inside of the walls of power vs trying to remove them via improvised explosives.

Some habits die awkwardly as he addresses Kato formally. "Colonel…er… Kato.  Maybe a bit that's not just the usual awkwardness of a new planet."

Kato gestures to the spot next to Kronwall and given the nod, sits.  "So, if not just a new planet, what is it?"

Kronwall tries to run his hand through where his hair used to be - it had been cut a few months back in solidary with another lance member who needed to shave his after bad head shot disrupted the neural connectors needed to be reseated - a tell he was trying to spool thoughts in his head.

"Listen, as far as I know myself and one other in Skaraborg are the only Rasalhauges in the company, maybe some of the newer support staff that I haven't met yet are ex-pats as well. I know we all have lost friends and loved ones to the damned Clans, hell, the memorial wall we painted on Uggla (Swedish for Owl) is proof of that."

Kato nods agreeing with the assessment and giving Erik the space and permission to continue.

"it's just extra painful when the place you nation you and your family helped even exist in the first place is now more or less exists only because Comstar says so."

Kronwall’s words certainly touch something in Kato, a flash of pain and a nod of understanding.

"We did.  And lost cause or not, raids against the Clans will likely continue and so represent future work."

"I'd like that if that happens.  I know it's difficult work and not everyone is up for it.  Our lighter elements... Would likely have a harder time of it which is a concern to me as well."

Kato stares off, though not at anything in particular.  "We'll get there at some point.  We need a bit of time to recover from all that.  And honestly, before we take one of those, I want to understand what happens to a unit that fails.  Are they trapped behind enemy lines?  Are they given safe passage off planet?  If so, at what price?"  He sighs.  "We've been building the Rangers into something.  Something solid.  I'm ok taking risks if folks are on board.  The Clans though?  They follow different rules that I don't yet understand, and I don't want to throw away all we've worked for until we have some idea what the rules are."

Kronwall furrows his brow for a brief moment, and motions Kato over to his office.  Office was a generous term.  It was a large storage room that had a pull-out sofa, two sawhorses and a door stacked on top for a desk.  "So....I've made some interesting friends over the years.  Somehow, I got into the good graces of someone at the LICs Bodians group back at Sanglamore.... Turns out he's been keeping the Turkina off the record as long as he got battle data from it occasionally and in return, he's sent me some Intel he's gathered."

Kronwall held his hands up reflectively "it's only battle rom and technical data -nothing operational.  I think the Lyrans are trying to get their own salvage running and we wrote the book on restoring Omnimechs.  In return we got this". Slowly taking his left hand into a thigh pocket, grabs a ruggedized data terminal.  "We have some Intel on our little invaders.  Mostly on the Wolves and Falcons on their practices for things like this.  Some good... Some not so good.  I think it's all going to play on how we handle ourselves in system.  That said if they have one of those monster armed jumpships all bets are off.”

"The only thing operationally they know about it is that it's a damn shop queen."

Kato looks at the RDT and nods.  "Happy to review whatever you've learned.  As I said, I expect we'll go back that way, just need a bit of a break first."

"Also, the LIC seems to think we own 13 Awesomes.  Honestly not sure how that's happened."

Kato actually laughs.  "You know, I used to have a lot of respect for MIIO and the LIC, but after what I've seen recently..."

"I think the LIC is incredibly dependent on where you're dealing with and how paranoid they are.   Never dealt with MIIO but met a lady once who claimed to be with DEST.  she was also very drunk."

"Well, you've dealt with them now after they tried to assassinate me and destroy the Rangers.  I think your assessment is correct though.  It depends on who within the organization you're dealing with."  He considers.  "I've told you my background before, right?  My identity and nation ripped away at age 13 and for more than 2 years trying to keep everything together while inside I was feeling as lost as a jumpship that misjumped?"

Kronwall offers Kato a chair which looks conspicuously like it was borrowed from the commissary. "This I haven't heard."

Kato accepts it and sits down.  "I grew up on Epsilon Eridani.  My family has strong and deep ties with the 4th Tau Ceti Lancers dating back to the Star League.  Anyway, Epsilon Eridani was a part of the Confederation up through the beginning of the 4th Succession War.  Back then I was a typical noble's son and underfoot with my relatives in the 4th learning what I could about the military, mercenaries and fighting all up to the ripe old age of 11.  It was late 3027, and I decided to start on my process to become a Capellan Citizen.  In the Confederation citizenship has to be earned.  It's not hard to do - spend some time in service to the State, but there are those to whom it's not important enough to be bothered with.  An idealist and precocious preteen I was going to start on it early.”

He chuckles briefly at his younger self.  "The 4th Succession War kicked off in 3028 and that caused a lot of worry for the adults and maybe a little for me, but really, what eleven-year-old worries about losing their planet?  I was on a mission."

"Then we hit 3029 and everything started falling apart.  The 4th was pulled off and members of my family evacuated including a lot of my extended family and my two older siblings.  The Confederation was so hard pressed with the war that reinforcements weren't coming.  Or at least that's what Ridzik claimed when he ripped away more than twenty star systems declaring us the 'Free Tikonov Republic.'  My identity and visions were all tied up in being a Capellan noble and citizen and in that moment, he ripped it all away."

Kato sighs and sits quietly for a moment.  "My world was falling apart.  My family was torn apart.  My younger siblings too young to grasp what was going on, and my parents busy trying to cope with their responsibilities and if they'd even still have those responsibilities in this new Republic.  I put on a brave face and told them to focus on my siblings and they were so grateful to have one less thing to have to worry about, they didn't realize it was all just a front."

"So, I buried myself in books for a time.  I read what I could of Ridzik - who by the way was the Strategic Military Director of the Confederation up to the moment he cut a deal with Hanse and betrayed the Confederation.  I tried to find solace in the principles of the Star League that so enamored and motivated my parents.  They're good, but they didn't grant thirteen-year-old me much comfort.  Then I went back and looked at the foundational Capellan Doctrines - The Korvin Doctrine, the Sarna Mandate and the Lorix Order.  They were neat, principled and spoke of duty and responsibility and provided a clarity on how to interact with the world."

"And so lost, fumbling and scared me, grasped the certainty, the duty, the clarity they provided.  I refocused my efforts on trying to help those who didn't want to be in the Free Tikonov Republic get back to the Confederation.  I had the free time of youth to help with paperwork and all.  My parents appreciated my dedication to the welfare of the citizens.  They really did care about them.  They humored my intent to still apply for Capellan Citizenship."

OOC: Conversation not finished, will be added to as the conversation continues.

-----------

Throughout the latter half of October, Kato and family will be seen with Kasei.  Being with his grandson and his great grandchildren seems to loosen his restraints and Kasei is far less reserved.  The family time is typically glimpsed in the inner courtyard and so intermittent.  It is perhaps a balance to the examinations that the couple endure.  During one of these times when Erin Mae is carrying Dai Eiko and chasing after a laughing Kenji, Kato’s conversation with his grandfather can be heard carried on the breeze.

“She won’t stay,” Kato tells him.  “I didn’t expect her to, especially due in just a few months.  Were I also staying…”

“She wouldn’t have a reason to leave,” his grandfather finishes.  “I understand.  For your sake, moving on is better for the moment.  It is a mark in your favor that you are not trying to take control or build influence at this time.  Acceptance will come in time.  Importantly you have come and honored your parents pledge, but more than that, you do it faithfully.  This is not simply a duty put on you by the Confederation that you grudgingly follow.  It is a duty, but one you embrace.  In this, truth to self shall be your shield.  Your wife though… she is still conflicted.  The mind knows, but the spirit hesitates.  Take care, or you will be seeking a new wife.”

Both men stare in silence at the woman who has been Kato’s partner for nearly twenty years.

“I will find you suitable candidates as tutors for the children who can also serve to guide Erin Mae, especially when you are in the field and cannot be with her.  She is strong in spirit.  It will work.”  It is a bit unclear if the words are spoken with conviction to convince Kato or to convince himself.

-----------

Portions of most days Kato spends getting to know the men and women who form the Atayde Guard, those from who he can recruit the core officers for his personal guard.  Former Midnight Lance’s Carey Fletcher is among them, and it would seem that at least one other of his current pilots is up for consideration as well as Sergeant Geta Milos is often present.  Speaking to him about his time with the Guard highlights the workout he’s getting through a combination of sword fighting, target practice, unarmed combat and running obstacle courses.  How much of that is required and how much is simply an opportunity to burn off energy is unclear.  In terms of recruiting, he seems to make at least some progress.  Most of the existing Atayde Guard will continue on with Kasei.  Seeking to understand what is permitted for one of Kato’s soon to be station indicates that he would be permitted up to a non-Mech regiment in strength, but it’s not close to that currently.

-----------

It comes perhaps as a bit of a shock to Benton Mudd just over two weeks after arriving to see Lieutenant Zin Edward and a companion crossing the courtyard heading deeper into the estate.  As if aware of Benton’s eyes on him he glances over while walking and noticing the good Colonel’s stare nods briefly in acknowledgement before continuing on chatting in Mandarin.  The two disappear into the public hall and out of Benton’s line of sight.

"Sibling Rivalries"
Manor House, Outskirts of Ceres City & Ceres City
Capella
End October, Early November, 3053

Over the next few days Kato’s Yamamori relatives start appearing.  Grandmother Yamamori along with a few aunts and uncles, plus multiple cousins, some with kids in tow.  Looking at the adults with various scars, tattoos, levels of fitness and carriage you expect some of them served in the military, though none were currently in uniform.  On the first of November though, the last of Kato’s family arrived.  Led by his brother Hiro Yamamori, a Lt. Colonel in the 4th Tau Ceti Rangers, the eight of them arrive in dress uniforms.  The next highest ranking of his cousins was a mere lieutenant and the rest sergeants.  Some of these he knew well.  As a teenager he had run errands for some of them, trained with them and learned some of the ropes of a mercenary command.  Most all of them seemed glad to see him.  They were a bit guarded perhaps, but open to the possibility of their cousin finally coming home.  Everyone except Hiro.  On his chest he wore three Liao Sunbursts of Gallantry and the Distinguished Service Award of the Free Worlds League with a ruby stone.  Moments pass as Hiro and the cousins regard Kato and vice versa.  Finally deciding to end the silence, Kato addresses them in Mandarin.

“It is good to see all of you.  It has been too long.  I look forward to catching up and hearing how you and your families fare.”  The gesture is well received by most, but not by Hiro.  Hiro’s eyes take in Kato’s clothes – not a uniform, nor clothes suited to a Mech cockpit and offers a soft snort.  “Brother.  You have finally arrived.  Has Grandfather yet shared his disappointment that you decided to go to NAMA rather than the prestigious Capellan War College?  I understand they finally gave you a commission… on your second time through.  Tell me, was it your lack of talent or the fact that you were a muzzled dog that kept you from command?”

Kato’s face hardens as his brother continues.  “The Rangers must have been truly desperate to put you in control and apparently too stupid to remove you.  In your tenure as commanding officer you’ve fled your charge, broken contract and managed to get twice as many of your soldiers killed as both the previous commanders combined, oh in half the time,” he offers an insulting slow clap.  “Impressive.”  He stops and stares.  “You are a threat to the Confederation if not as a plant than through your ineptitude.  I’m curious to see if you actually survive to make it to your investiture, Kato.  I’ve got a pool going.  Good odds on you living if you want them.  No one else does.  So yes, welcome to Capella, brother.  I’ll be happy to see what you’re made of.”

Leaving those behind stunned by his vitriol, Hiro sweeps past Kato and heads to the gateway to the inner courtyard and grandfather without even a glance behind.

Moon seeing and hearing the exchange waited until they separated before starting his verbal jab. Time to stir the pot a bit he thinks. The ass deserves it as Kato has been more than pleasant with him.

"Well lamb chop I’d suggest you rethink who you are talking to and about. I'd say he has more sway than you considering the fact this is his ceremony. Who knows maybe the Death Commandos may not like your tone with him. Well done setting yourself up to be questioned later."

Clapping at him slowly with a smile he adds.

"By the way where were you when we fought the clans? Running to the periphery to fight pirates? I don't see record any place of your actions for those medals you wore. Sure you didn’t just buy them some place?

Slightly droning off while looking away he added.

"Seems Kato has some leverage considering...cough cough... clans."

Turning back to give no doubt in what was said, "He upholds the Capellan ideal a hell of a lot better than you. Certainly, more honorable that’s for sure. He wouldn’t go make a scene at your ceremony if you had one, would he?  Also, one must not kill in vain and apparently your life even to him had worth. Be glad he pulled that strike, or your head would be rolling around here all unpleasant like."

Hiro regards the gweilo Moon mostly with amusement and contempt, though the last barb about the sword seems to irritate him.  "Your lack of familiarity with the Confederation is expected.  Though unlike you I didn't buy my commission or my medals.  Lyrans sell them cheap, do they not?  The Clans are a distant threat.  Why should I care if they gobble up Lyran worlds?  Sixty or so if rumors are to be believed.  As for the Death Commandos, they eliminate threats and that especially includes traitors and the disloyal.  From them I have nothing to fear.  Kato though...?" He shrugs.

Moon responds, "If I was a social general maybe but I earned all of mine but again what have YOU done that was so impressive? I hear nothing of your involvement on Tukayyid or any clan action at all, let alone any action. You say who cares about Lyran worlds. What about The worlds lost from the Dracs and Rasalhague as well.  You’re telling me elite units that went in and never came out from any of the houses amount to nothing but yet WE stood up to them on more than one occasion. I say the rest of the inner sphere may think otherwise and really your jabs have no weight on me. I've enjoyed our conversation and wish to not tarnish the festivities any further out of respect and honor for your grandfather and his TRUE heir KATO. "

He turns away and snaps another retort as he walks out of the room.

"Oh, and make no mistake every bit of honor between the two of US is all mine bureaucrat. Your no better than those social generals you make fun of."

Hiro's smug stare at Moon's back as he exits leaves no doubt that Hiro feels he got the better of the exchange.  Any who remain would catch his muttered comment of, "You only show off your ignorance gweilo."

-----------

Hiro’s presence dampens any excitement from Kato’s family, at least those that serve in the 4th.  Exchanges are brief and while within the bounds of what etiquette would demand, only barely so.  While their grandfather heads a family dinner and all do attend, those of the 4th ignore Kato as much as they are able, able to use Erin Mae as a proxy, though the slight is poorly veiled.

The next couple of days pass with regular challenges of Kato by Hiro as well as marked verbal sparring.  Kato refrains from the kind of verbal attacks that his brother is comfortable with.  He seems to prefer to let his skills speak for him, with mixed success.  Determined to set the bar early, Hiro challenges Kato to a “friendly” shooting competition.  While Kato is well trained, especially for a Mechwarrior, it is clear that Hiro is an expert marksman and could be a sniper.  Hiro’s next foray soon after goes against him though as he challenges Kato to a game of Weiqi (Go).  The insightful observer would realize that Kato is slightly better than Hiro and yet Kato trounces him.  While Hiro starts out carefully considering each move, as soon as one is done, Kato immediately places the next stone, putting pressure on Hiro to move again.  Believing Kato’s moves foolhardy, Hiro makes some bad gambles that Kato makes him pay for.  This frustration builds, resulting in Hiro not playing his game, but the one Kato is dictating to him.  It is a far faster and less forgiving game, at least if you spot the mistakes that get made.  That is something Hiro becomes less and less able to do, until his loss is complete.  The rest of that day devolves into verbal sparring, again with Kato not taking Hiro’s bait.  It is clear that Hiro has done his homework on Kato and the Rangers.  In addition to the original charges, he throws in the deaths of Kato’s first two XOs, people that Hiro had met with a comment that they deserved so much better than giving their life for him.

-----------

Rosk had been spending time mostly around the compound taking up painting, while wearing simple Capellan style clothing and a black wig.  Occasionally leaving the compound with an escort, anyone seeking to find out where he is going will find that he attends a herbal medical shop renowned for the owners knowledge of brewing herbs into teas with healing compounds.

Yet today is different. Two days after Hiro's arrival Rosk is painting in a kimono, his blond hair in full display. He is painting in a particular spot, with the only subject being plain shed. Yet Rosk has the look of someone who is waiting, knowing that his target is coming soon around the corner, and that Hiro would not be able to help himself from some comment in this situation.

It has not been an insufferable wait before the distinctive scuff click click, click click, scuff click click of Hiro's slightly unusual gait can be heard.  For whatever reason he has a tendency to catch his left heel a bit as he strides forward, causing the scuff sound before the usual click click click click of left heel, toe, right heel, toe and repeat.  It's faint, though likely to grate on the nerves of those who notice, so perhaps it's an affected gait.  Moments later Hiro rounds the corner and takes in the scene before him.  Unsure what he's looking at he pauses, attempting to interpret it.  He ponders and though Rosk can't quite see Hiro clearly, he can sense that Hiro almost asks a question then stops and looks again.

Addressing Rosk slowly in accented Japanese he will inquire, "A visual haiku?"

Rosk replies in Japanese, " A visual poem yes. An answer to the question who are you fighting. Of course, for one such as you you are always fighting the enemies of the State. Rats all around, rats in this house even. See here, a sunburst of gold is clearly starting to emerge. Yet I wonder at its core if you are fighting that sunburst or something else entirely? I will not know the question until I am done, and then it will really be up to others who will find some meaning in the work if they ever view it."

Hiro considers and ponders his answer for a moment.  It is unclear if he needs more time to process the less familiar language or is thoughtful.  Whichever the case, his response isn't long delayed.  "Warrior-poet.  A sign of a strong Chi."  He ponders a moment longer.  "One cannot fight the sun.  The sun can provide light and warmth.  Those who embrace it, revel in it and get too close to it, can become blinded by it and thus fail to see the destruction it brings to those with whom it is shared.  There are also the false dawns that show promise only to be recognized for promises never kept.  It does not dare enough to be the true dawn and thus deceives and fails those who depend upon it.  The sun has stolen much and yet the light being light cannot see it.  It does not recognize the darkness around it or that the light may simply illuminate what it values most, making it so much easier for the thief."  He lapses into silence briefly, but it's clear there's another thought.  "I fight to preserve.  Sometimes the only way to deal with a wound is to cauterize it.  It may not be what is wished for, but sometimes that's the only way to stop the bleeding."  There is a deep and powerful intensity to Hiro words, though they are not loudly spoken.  A sense perhaps of pain and loss and something more.

"Ah, spoken like a true leader of men." Rosk's tone seems softer right now than in the conversation. "An understanding that a true person requires more than just fighting. I find it refreshing, both this understanding as well as an understanding of what service to the state requires. In my brief time in the Confederation, I see people attending to their duty to the state. This is a refreshing change from being around others who just want liberty and freedom, and not a state to protect them.” Rosk chuckles, yet his next words carry a much harder tone. “I see we are alike in many ways. Men who had to make tough choices, and I can hear the impact of the incompetence of others as it weighs on you. Surrounded by political officers, although in my case the political officers wanted us dead always. The weight of incompetence, and the weight we have to carry through others incompetence, must weigh heavy on you?”

Hiro follows the commentary, his nods at a couple of points showing agreement yet there is still a wariness in his stance and tone uncertain on where the conversation heads. “Those with skill and talent have a duty to lead and sacrifice for the good of the State. The incompetent represent those who fail to find their proper place within the State or without. An incompetent commander may make for a productive electrician.  Should they do so, they should be thanked for it.  It is in failing to understand and accept one’s proper place that serves as a real threat to the State, for only working together can we achieve greatness. I have seen my share of people who fail to find their place and others who prevent others from attaining the responsibility that best leverages their talents. Worst yet are those who continue to reach beyond their grasp.”  He considers Rosk. “You deal with plenty of incompetence with my brother. How is it he’s still in command or why haven’t others left?”

Rosk is in the middle of a painting stroke, but it would take years of experience to spot the quick break in the stroke that occurs. After the stroke is complete Rosk responds, “Surely you have demonstrated enough research to know that I have only recently joined the Rangers, but still I have noticed some troubling trends. When fighting a dropship, Kato ordered my man to stay directly under the guns of the ship, and then when my trop was forced to withdraw he sent his own damaged man to hold the line against advancing mechs. While you said you fought for to preserve, I fight only for survival. An incompetent mechwarrior can only learn to become a competent engineer if given the change to recognize and change. It’s one of the failures of the Combine actually, being too static in the face of the need for change. I was born without opportunity, and only the Coordinator’s willingness to break tradition put me in a mech. While my time in the mustered forces was full of incompetence, it’s all I’ve known since I was 12.”

“Knowing this incompetence, why did you even return here? While we must recognize the decision of our betters, we also must take what life hands us. Hence my focus on survival, and why I am with the Rangers now.”

"Survival is merely the beginning.  There are other places and units that would permit far more than survival, it would seem wise to seek out those opportunities.  You are not far from Outreach and the opportunities it would provide.  As to why I came, I returned with the hope of stopping what was to occur.  Perhaps my grandfather will see reason.  He does have other alternatives."  He pauses.  "You say he sent your man and then one of his own to stand under the guns of a dropship and hold the line against advancing mechs.  Why?  And was he not able to do it himself?"  The questions are almost reluctantly asked, the risk perhaps a double-edged sword and his caution heightened perhaps by his recent loss to his brother in Weiqi.

I recall he was severely damaged, and I could swear a gauss shell that was destined for his head somehow veered off and hit him elsewhere. Yet even in this damaged state, he stayed on the field commanding a successful attack on the dropship. If I were to be very generous in this, he threw himself into combat first, a real lead by example. On this last contract, I can remember some days of him stressing out over how close the combat was. So, I guess why I don’t just leave is truly wrapped up in this. I am a serpent to my core, and while I do not wish harm to the Rangers, I am waiting to see what happens on the day after your brother chooses to fight the sun. He has just enough hubris, which NIAS taught him to conceal as honor, to think that he can punch the sun. I am just waiting for the day after, to begin to see what kind of man Kato truly is.”

Hiro responds, “If he did not have honor by the time he got to the Academy, I am doubtful he ever will. He seemed on a good path when young, though my parents have strange ideas when it comes to governing and principles. Loyalty to a dead State was primary. Loyalty to the Confederation, secondary.  It is how they could betray the Confederation and may the Suns suffer the same betrayal to their regret.  Though if they have could not take their measure then, then they deserve what they get.” He takes a step back. “Let me know when the painting is complete. I will want to see the visual poem in its final form.”

"I will. This has been a pleasure, but I feel that the time for painting is done. The light is not quite right anymore. Take care, Hiro."

Hiro nods. “And you too.”  With the conversation clearly at an end he continues on.

-----------

Shortly after speaking to Rosk, Hiro challenges Kato to a fencing match.  It is an intense and highly skilled exchange with both men demonstrating a fair amount of skill with the blade.  Having agreed upon the best of three.  Kato narrowly pulls out the victory.  Frustrated and unsatisfied with the outcome, Hiro ups the challenge.

“Easy enough when it’s just play, isn’t it?  The real test is when people’s lives are on the line, not a game of touches.”

“Your point?”

“Live steel.  There are dao in the dojo.  Fight to first blood.”

“Done.”

The crowd for the fencing match had been sizeable and with the promise of blood, it drew even more attention.

“This one you’ll lose, Kato.  We’re not playing anymore.”  Kato simply stares at him in reply.

The blades selected are immaculately maintained.  The edges extremely sharp.  The Master at Arms for the dojo initiates the fight then steps away.  The brothers leap at each other and the sound of quality steel on steel rings through the otherwise quiet building.  As with the fencing the two are closely matched.  The danger is more in the speed they are moving that first blood may not be merely a cut.  The intensity of the fight makes the fencing look like just a warmup.  Minutes crawl by with neither gaining the upper hand as steel flashes and rings.  It becomes clear that it will likely end with either a bold move or a mistake, possibly both.  Hiro executes the bold move, seeking to execute a complex maneuver and bypass Kato’s guard.  Unfortunately for Hiro, he over-extends, and his execution is off just enough to allow Kato to counter.  The problem for Kato is that the effective counter has a decent likelihood of being a killing blow and so rather than take the opportunity given his counter is awkward and he off-balance.  Recovering and sensing a far easier attack, Hiro is able to bind Kato’s dao while taking him to the ground, the point of Hiro’s blade pressed against Kato’s neck.

“The Confederation is not a forgiving place,” he says, pushing the tip into Kato’s neck, a small trickle of blood starting, “and you aren’t willing to do what is necessary for the good of the Confederation,” he pushes slightly harder, and the trickle picks up a bit, but not yet a point of concern as it’s not against the artery.  There’s a restlessness in the gathering, though none willing to intervene as it would take little to take this past the point of no return. “You will bring destruction through your weakness to the Confederation and dishonor to our family name.  Go.  Home.”  With those final two words he withdraws the sword, turns and strides to the Master of Arms, bowing slightly before handing him the blooded blade and leaving.

“When the guest of honor isn’t necessarily welcomed, where does that leave his guests?”  The familiar voice takes Benton by surprise as Lt. Zin Edward, Death Commando has slipped unnoticed to a point a half step back and to the left of Mudd.  As Mudd shifts to guard against an attack which doesn’t come, Zin sighs.  “Really?  I’m disappointed.  If I were going to kill you here, you’d already be dead.  Colonel Atayde made a polite request that his investiture not be marred with the assassination of any of his guests.  And here we are.  Two men having a polite conversation.”

After Benton’s retort and a bit of verbal sparring (OOC: to be added in detail if Steve is interested) Zin brings the point home.  “Let’s set aside the niceties for a moment, shall we?  You’re here at our sufferance because we chose to honor the request.”  He switches topics, though knowing Zin there’s a point.  “Did you watch Hiro and Kato’s sword fight? Both skilled.  And that counter that Hiro forced Kato into?  Are you familiar with it?  Kato was, though he didn’t do it properly.  You see, had he let his instincts guide him, the counter would have likely killed his brother.  A tragic accident forced upon him by someone who’s clearly his inferior.”  He pauses.  “It would be truly awful if something like that accidentally happened to you.”  He shakes his head sadly and walks off.

It is late evening; dinner is done and the sun nearly eclipsed by the horizon.  Those out in the eastern gardens hear halting notes, followed by ones more tenuous, almost haunting, or could be.  Almost as though someone was fumbling their way through lost muscle memory.  By sound it is clearly a Chinese woodwind of some sort.  The astute will recognize the sound and range as matching a long dizi.  The melodies played aren’t overly complex.  The musician likely a skilled beginner or perhaps early intermediate.  A far cry from what the instrument is capable of, yet soothing in its sound and rhythm.  Closing on the sound you spot Kato playing the instrument, seated on the ground, back to part of the frame to the gazebo looking out over one of the larger pools.  He notices someone approaching and looks in their direction.

"Intervention"
Manor House, Outskirts of Ceres City
Capella
November 4, 3053

It is early the day after the sword battle.  Kato was checked out the night before, his wound tended to.  Erin Mae is furious with him for letting it get that far, though seems unsure what the best path forward is.  That discussion becomes moot when Kato is summoned to his grandfather’s study.  Waiting there with him is Hiro.  It is clear that the two had been talking before Kato’s arrival and that Hiro is not apparently happy with the outcome.

“Kato come in.”  He gestures to a seat and with the expression on his grandfather’s face, it is clear that was not a request.  Once Kato is seated Kasei begins.  “This. Ends.”  He stares at Kato for an uncomfortable minute before doing the same to Hiro.  Kato’s eyes drop quickly with a response of, “Yes, Grandfather.”  Hiro’s response is longer in coming, though it comes nonetheless.  “Yes, Grandfather,” he responds, his tone one of grudging admission.
Turning his attention back to Kato, his Grandfather speaks quietly but there’s a real bite to the words despite the soft tone.  “You are my Heir.  That only works if you’re still alive and fit enough to perform the office.”  The room lapses into silence punctuated a short time later with a question, “What is the key point of the Korvin Doctrine?”

“That individuals must work together for the good of the ‘Greater Humanity’ to ensure its survival among the stars,” both of the brothers dutifully repeat.

“And that of the Sarna Mandate?”

“Only those with proper training be it military, scientific or political – are competent enough to take on leadership roles,” they both state.

“But clearly Kato isn’t…”

Kasei cuts of Hiro’s interjection with a third question, “and what of the Lorix Order?” he asks, voiced raised just enough to cut through Hiro’s objection.

“MechWarriors are and should remain a special breed unto themselves.  They should be accorded the highest honor possible and in turn should be expected to perform the most outstanding feats of daring in defense of the state and its citizens,” they quote from the 3rd Dicta.

“So, it would seem the two of you know the precepts even if you’re not currently following them.  Duty to the State and specifically its people is paramount.  Trained as you are as Mechwarriors, you have the training, the leadership and the duty to place the good of the citizenry first.  The easiest places to start with working together are with family and your military units.  The Atayde line has long served the Confederation, having been in service even before its founding dating back more than 700 years.  The bloodline continues through both of you as well as your siblings, but currently the name continues through Kato and his family.”

Apparently the opening that Hiro had been waiting for, he interjects.  “Yes, duty to the State.  Kato has already betrayed it.  He stayed behind though could have come.  He served the treacherous Davion dogs for a decade earning commendations for their glory and even after that and leaving the AFFC, he still wouldn’t commit publicly to the path he says he wants.  He hasn’t even taken a contract with the Confederation yet as a way to help the State prosper.  He…”

“Enough!  It is clear that you’re quite familiar with Kato’s record, then you should also have learned how he is viewed.  He has an excellent reputation for honor and loyalty.  He is committed to his unit and lives the Lorix principle of being loyal to the citizenry he protects.  At great risk to his own life, he does not leave any behind.  Despite remaining behind and the difficulties it entailed both initially and ongoing, he pressed ahead and earned his Capellan citizenship.  This while still applying to military academies including NAMA.  Once achieved he refused to relinquish it, understanding the importance of both it and the philosophies that underpin it.  It is valued because it must be earned.  As for remaining quiet on his eventual path, did you consider that it might be wise to keep that quiet and not further cause his parents and younger siblings further risk?”

“If he was planning on picking to come here, then if difficulties befell the traitors who remained behind, so much the better!” Hiro spits out.  “I have been the loyal one.  I have been the one devoted to the best interests of the Confederation.  Why is it that Kato should be the one to carry on the family name and not me?”

Grandfather’s face becomes a mask.  “Service is expected from every citizen, each in their way and according to State needs.  Yours is a different path.  I had expected this to be a pleasant surprise, but I see that is not possible now.  Hiro, for your loyal service to the State, during the ceremony that will include Kato’s investiture, you will also be elevated.  Further you’ll be offered a command position in the Red Lancers and stationed on the Federation’s capital.”

“You might also consider that unlike you there will be extra scrutiny and distrust of Kato and his family likely for a long time to come.  It may be that he comes to need your assistance to vouch for him, the power of that referral solely in your hands.  The Confederation is fortunate to have you both.  I am asking for you to follow our guiding principles and put the welfare of the State and its citizenry first and end this feud.  Will you do this for me?”

Kato offers a solemn nod, and both look over at Hiro.

Hiro’s attitude changes significantly.  “Oh. In that case, all right.  You ask for this to end, it is ended.  I am happy to serve.  Do you have need of me still then?”

Grandfather shakes his head.  “No.  I still have things to discuss with Kato, but you may go Hiro.”  With the dismissal, Hiro stands, nods cordially to Kato and leaves.

Kasei takes a moment to find his center after Hiro’s departure and considers Kato.  “The words I spoke to Hiro are true.  There is a great deal of distrust of foreigners, and despite the circumstances of your birth and your efforts to achieve citizenship despite the risks and challenges, you aren’t going to be viewed without suspicion for a long time if ever.  Justin Allard’s betrayal was burned into the psyche of the Confederation, especially the Liao family and those entrusted with the Confederation’s safety.  I believe you will overcome it in time, but your wife will receive even greater scrutiny and it will not be comfortable as she is already discovering.  You are on the right path.  No one said it would be easy though.”

He gets up and strides over to the window looking out.  “Given the free choice between you and Hiro, I would still have picked you and it wouldn’t be much of a competition.  Hiro doesn’t have the temperament for good rulership and can be goaded into poor choices as your Weiqi game demonstrated.  It is a flaw that the State will need to manage, but your brother isn’t without his benefits either.  Hiro’s attitudes were set decades ago and while they fit well with the current times, times change, and Hiro adapts poorly.”

He considers.  “I think that is enough for now.  Remember your duty and know that more testing is to be expected.”

Kato stands and bows.  “Thank you for your wisdom, Grandfather.”

Kasei nods.  “May you show your wisdom too, for it will be sorely tested in the upcoming days.”

Kato nods acknowledging the advice and leaves.

Things have clearly changed between Kato and Hiro, much to the relief of the rest of the household.  Hiro’s behavior has evolved from one filled with vitriol for his younger brother to being civil.  Kato returns the civility in kind and with that out of the way, there is room for warmer and more engaged interactions with his cousins in the 4th.

While the interview of officers and assessments of candidates continue, the pace has slowed at least on that front.  The estates welcome several matronly women over the next few days speaking to both Kato and Erin Mae and interacting with the children.  The interviews and examinations of both Kato and his wife continue unabated, though as the days pass the focus seems less on Kato and more on Erin Mae.  It is something she bears with dignity and grace, but it is clear to those that know her that it’s taking its toll as well.

-----------

The afternoon of the 7th Kato gathers the Rangers present for a briefing.  “As you’re aware, Grandfather’s guest is arriving on the 9th.  When that occurs, security will be significantly tightened, and we’ll be under lockdown here until after the investiture.  Not ideal,” he notes raising his voice slightly to cut off any complaints, “but it’s only a week.  We spend more time in effective lockdowns getting to and from planets.  So, we’ll have a night on the town tomorrow night.  Hit the bars, the clubs, restaurants – whatever you want within reason.  We’ll still have our security details.  Plan on groups of six to eight.  We’ve got a day to get organized so figure it out.”

"One Night in Ceres"
Ceres City
Capella
November 8, 3053, Evening

More than a score of groups between 6 and 8 Rangers plus appropriate security details departed for various points in Ceres City.  Kronwall and Breisacher convinced Kato to join them in a craft brewery tour broken up by some walks through different green spaces.  Kronwall joking referred to it as the “Drunken Master Pub Crawl.”  Mechanic Ciara D'Eyncourt, Administrator Jannet Birnie, Crusher pilot Nancy Pascha, and Ice Tech Peggy Sen rounds out the group with room for another.

The Apocalypse Rising crowd including Cherikov, Brightsword, Moon, Malthus and Wilhem along with two other Rangers were heading out to a restaurant and then to a bar.  Others nearby could hear the friendly smack talk exchanged with Vlad taunting his opponents that it was already early 2780 and he was still ensconced on Earth.  While the participants traded jabs over things that went better for their side than history, it paused when Nicolas told Vlad, “That’s nice, I’m coming for you.”  While the Rim World Forces were generally doing better than Amaris’ force had historically, the battles against Nicolas’ forces spearheaded by the 2nd Army were another matter.  He was crushing the RWR forces battle after battle after battle.  Had the others kept better pace Malthus’ forces would have reached Earth around the time that Kerensky did, but like Kerensky he was ensuring the other thrusts were keeping pace.  The noose was tightening and Vlad’s options rapidly dwindling.

Responding to Vlad, Will tells him, “Sometimes your luck turns. Favor better used for another day. Better a game and roll average than running out on the battlefield."

While meant as a quip, it brings to mind the seventeen individuals who died during the last contract sobering things a bit.  Jake sensing an opportunity to prevent the comment from killing the evening raises his glass in toast to the Rangers who have fallen.  It is a toast all the people present can get behind.  He then turns to Heinrich.  "Hey Wilhem!  Can you imagine what Wyat would have done with the 16th Army if we'd've given it to him?  He'd've been like, 'Caspar, Caspar, Caspar.  See?  There's no such thing as bad...'," Jake did a lousy impression of Heinrich's XO who had died just a few months prior, but it was funny, "and that would have stopped right at the point when the drones would have blown up his Potemkin!"  Jake's horrible impression and amusing comment are enough to turn the corner and get things back on a more positive track.

--------

Mudd and Hitzig along with Dancer Pilots Chastity Wolf and Teri MacInnit, Dragon pilot Jason Gato, Battle Armor Tech Rich Boerth and Administrator Soon-Hee Yu had plans as well.  Chastity had been talking to Klaus who told her about a great game bar with excellent microbrews.  She had challenged the good Colonel to a game of chess and wouldn’t stop the smack talk until he relented and agreed to the game.  Loser would buy a couple of rounds not for just the winner, but the other Rangers in their group.  It’s almost certain that Rich heard the term “free beer” and decided to tag along with them, though the men to women ratio probably didn’t hurt either.  Soon-Hee was along for the fun being friends with Chastity and used her logistics expertise to secure them a prime location and reserved table.  That however was for later.  There was a restaurant and a couple of bars to hit on the way to the main event.

The evening progressed well with different groups of Rangers spotting each other moving about from time to time.  It seemed to work out that no more than two groups ever patronized the same establishment at the same time.  Typically, the group that had been there longer was encouraged to move on to another location.  While the groups weren’t all tightly packed into the same few blocks, their arrival was noticed.  The Rangers varied appearance and discussions in languages other than Mandarin or Cantonese set them apart from the locals, who are polite and largely stay out of their way.  Their unfamiliar looks cause them to be eyed by various members of the populace, some with frowns, some with curiosity and some with something more.  It’s clear that many of them are being sized up, the more attractive Rangers drawing more scrutiny, though the majority drawing at least some interest as “exotic.”  Hitzig’s alertness which had relaxed a bit at the estate over the past couple of weeks is at full attention, spotting and mentally cataloguing the various reactions to her group.  She notices one woman in particular seems particularly interested in Mudd having followed the group to its various locations.

Arriving at their final destination, the group gets settled at a few tables, Mudd and Wolf at the middle table as their match is the main attraction.  Mudd buys a round of drinks and others order food and appetizers as this is where the group intends to spend the bulk of the night.  Wolf teases Mudd that it’s good he’s getting used to paying for the drinks now, to which he tells her that it’s the only round he’ll have to buy tonight.  The proverbial gauntlet is thrown and picked up.  Piles of C-bills, Eagles, Pounds and even Yuan start forming as different bets are finalized.  The bar itself is lively and busy with a variety of games being played.  While the Rangers get a bit of initial attention when they arrive there’s enough noise and focus on other patrons’ own games to leave the newcomers largely alone.  The two-person security detail has taken a nearby table with clear lines of sight on the exits.

Before a second round of drinks can be ordered a woman in traditional Chinese garb carries a decorative looking chess set over, pieces already in their places and carefully sets it down with the white pieces in front of Benton and the black in front of Chastity.  Offering a slight bow she turns and walks off.  Halfway across the room she runs into Kathrin, the collision enough to cause both women to stumble and the server’s wig to get knocked askew revealing short blonde hair.  The blonde hair triggers a thought, “Haven’t I seen you before?” which triggers a brusque “Definitely not.”  The exchange is in English though it catches Kathrin’s attention that the woman’s accent changes when speaking.  While pondering the woman adjusts her wig and heads into the back, the chance for further questions slipping away with her.

At the table an argument has started between the two players.  “Move.” Chastity tells Benton.
“Wait.  Why am I going first?”
“Well, you’re playing white.  If you don’t even know that much, this is going to be a far faster game than I thought.”
“Who said I’m playing white?”
“Well, that’s the way the board is, isn’t it?”
“Shouldn’t you have the opportunity to go first?”
“Take all the advantage you can, old man, I’m taking you down!”
As the argument is going on Soon-hee gets up and squats down next to the table looking at the pieces.  They’re some sort of native hardwood, and exceptionally well carved, with a decorate stone base.  Cathrin notices the board, the argument and Soon-hee’s interest as she arrives back at the table.  “When did that arrive?” she asks Soon-hee, settling in the open chair next to her.
“Just a couple of minutes ago.  A server brought it over.”
“Which server?”
“I don’t know, not our usual one.”
“Shouldn’t we pick one of the pieces at random to determine who’s going first?”
“Don’t want to miss an excuse for why things went wrong if you lose?”
“Who said I’m going to lose?”
“What did she look like?”
“Then why won’t you move?”
“Shoulder length straight black hair, green kimono, maybe 5’6”?  I don’t know, didn’t get a good look at her.”  Soon-hee continues to study the pieces.
“I want to make sure YOU don’t have an excuse for when I beat you.”
Chastity laughs.  “Like that will happen.”
Soon-hee reaches out to pick up a piece then pauses, “Can I?”
“Huh?  Yeah,” Mudd replies.  “Go for it.”
Soon-hee picks up the white queen and pulls it back to her, studying it.
“You want to make a bet on that?”
Soon-hee shifts to sitting on the floor.
“Didn’t we already?  Two rounds for everyone.”
Her head starts to shake slightly then droops forward, fingers loosening, the queen falling.
“Add a bottle of top-shelf liquor for the winner.”
“Seriously?  Did my birthday come early?”
There’s the sound of stone hitting wood as the base of the queen strikes the floor and rolls under the table.
Soon-hee slumps forward though doesn’t quite seem to be reaching for it.
Mudd spots the piece rolling near his foot.  “I got it.”
Kathrin gets a good look at Soon-hee as Mudd reaches for the piece, her hand darting out and grabbing his wrist as he almost has it, “Stop!” she calls.  It’s loud enough that it attracts attention, and you realize one of the security detail was already out of his chair and moving towards Soon-hee when Cathrin’s call came.
“Look” Hitzig says to Mudd, pointing to Soon-hee who has tipped over and lay crumpled on the ground.  The security guard finishes closing the short distance and checks her.  His eyes flicker to his partner who has already stood and is scanning, weapon drawn.
“Poison?” she asks.
The security guard nods.  “We’re leaving.”
Mudd looks at Hitzig already having come to both conclusions.  “Thank you.”
She nods in response, looking back at the others who are on alert and scanning as well.  “Hey,” she calls to get people’s attention.  She describes the server she ran into and gets agreement that it was likely her.  The second security guard moves quickly but cautiously over to the door to the back.  A server exits, startled by the presence of an armed man next to them and in the confusion the guard slips into the back.  He’s gone for less than a minute before returning.  Bets have already been picked up and money left on the table for food and drinks.  The group moved quickly to a small waiting area near the front door that provides limited sight lines and cover.

The guard who’s been with them nods respectfully to Kathrin and it is only a few minutes longer before one of the limos pull up.  The guard who checked the back has a rapid conversation in Mandarin with the owner, and the chess board and pieces are dumped into a bag, the queen on the ground picked up using a cloth napkin and plastic as barriers and dropped into the bag.  Once gathered, the guard takes the bag in his free hand and covers the rest of the group’s exit.

There are six more security guards outside, weapons drawn and looking for any possible vantage point that a shooter would find convenient.  Each of the Rangers is screened in the dash to the limo and in just a short time all are safely ensconced.  As they start driving, Kathrin realizes that the server is the same woman she spotted on the street that had been Mudd’s admirer, though she’d been dressed differently.  She is also certain having gotten a good look at her and seeing the blonde hair that she’d seen her somewhere before, but can’t place where.  It bugs her, but she’ll have to to look into it after she gets back.

One of the guards starts questioning everyone in the back to understand what they observed.  It’s clear from the questions he asks, he has a lot of experience teasing out details around a scene asking not only about what they saw, but what they heard, smelled and felt if anything.  The muffled discussion being held in the front of the limo you expect is covering what’s currently known with their superiors.  As the questions end in the back of the limo, he places a call of his own.  While you can’t understand the Mandarin he’s speaking.  The cadence of delivery is that of delivering a report, one that goes on for quite a while.

-----------

While spending time at the estate Rosk had overheard a few of the Atayde Guard talking with Fletcher about activities and excitement in and around Ceres City.  One of the options he was let in on were motorcycle races on dirt just outside the city.  It was sponsored "unofficially" by a local manufacturer who provided the bikes ensuring it was left to the skill and daring of the bikers to win or fall behind.  While that particular option didn't particularly pique Fletcher's interest, it did Rosk's.  Talking to the guardsmen afterwards he was given the information on where to go, who to ask for and how to get involved.  At least a couple of them were regulars and could vouch for him at least to get him in the door.

So when the opportunity was presented to cut loose before the lockdown, Rosk bucked the trend of larger groups.  He had what he wanted - a drag competition with loud bikes. Dirt bikes races with all the excitement that brings. The ability to throw around money, and pretend to live fast. God help Rosk, because the initial amount of requests was ridiculous. No, there would be a security detail. Bets could be made, but if you were in the race, only on yourself to win.  Having let the couple of guys know that he'd be heading out, they asked and he agreed they could join him.

The night was simply planned. A nicer diner for pre food. A bar that pretended to be a dive bar, but was carefully screened by security for safety. The event with a strict leaving time, and Rosk had to agree with a limit of alcohol with the two accompanying him, at least if he wanted them to vouch for them.  There'd be plenty of time for drinking later.  He was warned up front to bring Yuan or C-bills and not other currency.  At least, if he didn't want to pay the exorbitant exchange rates the bookies there would charge.

The night came, with Rosk and Sergeant Park going out with the two guardsmen and the security detail. The diner was fine, drink afterwards nice and overpriced, and then the event. Rosk was having a great time, eating cheap food while dressed in his clothing that fit in and his black wig.  Newbies were allowed to arrive a bit early, pay the fees and get to do a few laps to get a feel for both the bikes and the course.  Things Rosk certainly took advantage of to even the playing field as much as possible.  Park didn't plan to race, but was happy to cheer his CO on.  Eyeing the competition and feeling good, he placed some significant bets early on his first few races.  It was a bit of a slow night, and the regulars were happy to take some action and hopefully cash from the new guy.  Park could have told them it was a bad idea to bet against his boss, but then he wouldn't have been able to cash in on his own bets if he did.

Out of the gate Rosk jockeyed for position staying near the front of the pack, but not in the lead, biding his time to make his move.  He almost lost the first race because of it as a couple other bikers had the same idea and almost boxed him out.  Not to be outdone he skillfully maneuvered his bike around the competition and managed to pull ahead by a full length by race's end.  At that point he'd recovered most of the money he'd put out for dinner, drinks and fees.  The second race came with greatly tighter odds.  He argued against it but not too hard realizing that if he'd won his argument he might have generated some camaraderie amongst the other bikers to freeze him out.  He had to work harder the second time - the better riders weren't going to make the same mistake twice.  Still, he managed to win, covering not only the rest of his fees, but all the remaining bets he had that evening.  It was on track to be an excellent night before the call came.

He was just rolling his bike over to the field when his security detail materialized and let him know in no uncertain terms that the evening was over.  On the one hand he was pissed.  He was positioned to make some serious scratch.  On the other hand, though he was already by a few hundred on the evening even forfeiting his remaining bets.  There were worse ways to end an evening.  It was clear that "no" was not an option, so with good grace he and Park allowed themselves to be removed.  There was just a bit of the usual taunting for pulling out and the smack talk brought a smirk to Rosk lips.  The talk died though when the other biker was stared down by the security detail leaving no doubt who was calling the shots.  With a casual shrug at the heckler Rosk left with Park and the group made their way back to the estate.

Within the hour all of the groups that were out on the town have been retrieved and are safely back at the estate.  Security has clearly been stepped up as the limo hits checkpoints before pulling up at the manor.  There’s also a far more obvious presence of the Atayde Guard on the grounds.  Though many of the Rangers are disappointed in having their night cut short, there’s no grumbling given the cause.  Kato makes the rounds and checks on everyone, starting with Benton, Kathrin and their group.

“Thank you, Kathrin for your alertness and quick action.  Had it not been for you, there’s a good chance Benton here would be dead.  I’ve heard bits and pieces.  Can you give me the run down?”

Kathrin walks him through everything she saw and knows, and even after wracking her brain for the last hour, she still can’t remember where she’s seen the woman before.  Kato is clearly angry about the attempt on Benton, something currently under a tight leash.  “Figure it out if you can.  They’ve already sent a quiet lockdown request to the spaceport.”

He turns to Mudd, “I’m sorry this happened.  Sounds hastily arranged based on the details Kathrin provided and security is being tightened here.  I’ve talked to my grandfather.  No one will be arriving that isn’t personally known to multiple other people present.  We’ll get to the bottom of this, and woe be it to whoever’s responsible.”

"I know you will, Kato, and I appreciate it.  One of our own is dead because of me and I can’t stand that feeling.   I am not entirely convinced that Lt Zin and/or the Death Commandos are behind is.  The previous attempt by the Commandos does come to mind.  But there are additional people in my past who might want me dead.  Caitlin, we will have a command staff meeting at some point to go over this."

-----------

Once Kato had checked in with all the groups and ensured that everyone was accounted for he went looking for his grandfather.  Ensconced in his study, Kato waited outside politely a muffled conversation heard from the other side of the door until one of the Atayde Guard knocked and he was permitted entry.

Kato bowed respectfully before asking his questions.  "Any progress Grandfather on finding who was responsible?"

Surprisingly his grandfather nodded.  "Yes.  They picked up several suspects related to the incident and are currently investigating.  We likely won't know more for at least a few days.  I have been assured they have an expert looking into it and I will make sure you are informed of the results."  Kato nodded.  "You have something more?"

"Mudd believes that the Death Commandos are behind it," though his tone indicates he's not sold on that explanation.  "And what of you?" Kasei asks.

"I'm not sure.  It would seem stupid to warn your target and then make such a clumsy attempt.  Though by that logic, it could be quite an ingenious strategy, open to ruling out the 'obvious' choice as too obvious and looking for another option."

Kasei smiles slightly.  "It would seem your instincts for politics and clandestine operations has at least a pulse.  I do not believe it to be the Death Commandos.  Should I be wrong, and our honor impugned I will be happy to demonstrate how far my reach goes and how subtle it can be," he states, his voice hard.  "You can reassure your friend that I take the matter seriously."

It is evident to Kato that this conversation is at an end.  "Yes, Grandfather.  I will do just that."

-----------

Kato goes seeking Benton out after his conversation with his grandfather.  He finds Benton with Jade having an intense conversation which ends as soon as they become aware of him.  Benton's clearly NOT happy.  "Well?"

Kato shares the results of the conversation with him.  With that done, there's not much more they can do about that.  For now.

Mudd retires to his quarters with Sgt Lewis.  Jade fiercely hugs Benton and whispers in his ear “I’m so relieved that you’re alright.”  She then breaks the hug and hauls off and slap him across the face with the force of a thundercrack.  Benton nearly hits the floor as Jade screams, “Don’t you ever leave me behind like that again when your life is on the line.  We are a team in ALL things; the good, bad and the ugly.”  Calmer now, her emotions spent, Jade says, "Let’s go to bed and talk over what happened.  Maybe there is a clue that we have missed.”

-----------

Once things have settled down since the incident at the bar, Hitzig begins talking to Mudd about any information on who would want to go so far to kill him, despite the orders of a cease fire from the commandos.

Trying to pry as much information as possible from Mudd so she can be ready to act faster than moments prior.

"In any case, hopefully we can find out who hired her for the hit and if we can prevent something like this again in the future."

"Honored Guest"
Manor House, Outskirts of Ceres City
Capella
November 9, 3053

Despite the events of the previous evening, things are expected to be in good form and turned out for the arrival of Kasei’s honored guest.  The heightened security added the night before is still in evidence and looks to have been added to.  Everyone is requested to dress their best with Kato asking for those under his command to wear their dress Rangers uniforms with full awards.  Asked he confesses he still doesn’t know who the guest is, but given his grandfather’s request, it is someone of note.  It is getting to be later in the afternoon when all are asked to turn out, including the staff.  Kasei himself opens the limo door for the new arrival.  Out steps a man in his late 40s, well-built and clearly in fighting trim.  Anyone who has spent any time studying the available military intelligence on the Confederation will recognize the man immediately – Ion Rush, House Master of Warrior House Immara, and by extension House Master of all Warrior Houses within the Confederation.

The soldiers and staff all stand a bit straighter, not wanting to bring dishonor upon Kasei Atayde or his house.  Ion greets Kasei as an old friend and looking around nods in appreciation of the display, eyes lingering an extra moment or two on Kasei’s various guests.  Ion’s security detail is all in House Immara uniforms and they join him as first he and Kasei then the other guests make their way back into the Manor House.  Soldiers in House Immara uniforms supplement the already noticeable presence of the House Atayde guard.

That night there is a dinner in his honor and throughout the dinner Ion engages with Kasei.  Otherwise, he seems content to observe and take in the rest of those present.  This includes all of Kasei’s various guests as well as some of Kasei’s senior or most promising officers.  The following day Ion can be seen out and about walking the courtyards and the gardens, generally observing, not really interacting with others.  It is therefore a bit of a surprise to Kato when on the 11th he receives a request to join Ion in his grandfather’s study for a game of Weiqi.  Kato arrives early but finds Ion already present, the board set up.

“Colonel Atayde,” Ion greets him and gestures to the chair on the other side of the board.

“House Master Rush,” Kato rejoins, taking his seat.

Ion gestures to the black stones piled to his right, offering Kato the opportunity to take it and go first.  Kato smiles and picks up a black stone, but then picks up a white one, shakes them between his closed hands and offers two closed fists.  “Your choice, House Master.”  Ion nods and selects left which turns out to be the black stone which he places, and the game commences.  The room is quiet as the two men battle back and forth for territory across the board.  It is a surprisingly tight game, given the experience and skill Rush must have for his position and who by all measures is playing a good game.  In the end, Rush does win but by a fairly narrow margin after the advantage of going first is factored in.  He considers.  “That is the best game I’ve had in quite a while.  Your skill is good.  Your instincts are better.  You need to bring them into even greater harmony.  It will make you an even more dangerous opponent.”  Kato nods in response, “thank you.”  The two lapse into silence before Rush shifts topics.

“What in your view is the greatest of the three principles?”

A different tact on the questions his examiners have been asking throughout the past couple of weeks.  Kato takes a moment to examine the question before answering.  “None of them.  The three are in balance, one building on the next.  In the end, the good of the people as represented by the State is what’s important.  It is the duty of all to support it, even should that not be in the individual’s best interests, for only collectively will we succeed.”

Not quite the rote answer he may have expected, though if it surprised him, it didn’t show.  “And the individual?”

“Where possible the individual should be permitted to live the life they choose and pursue their dreams and passions, provided that it is not to the State’s detriment.”

“And if the two are in conflict?”

“Then the individual should be given the opportunity to bring things back into harmony.  Should they be unable to do that, the individual should remove themself from the State or if necessary, the State should remove them”

“How?”

“By whichever means are most appropriate.”

“Appropriate, not simply necessary or expedient?”

Kato shrugs slightly.  “The manner of removal may itself be in service to the State, while the most expedient may not serve it as well.”

Ion considers for just a moment before replying, “appropriate may have greater upside and less downside than expedient, true.  But expedient eliminates the threat to the State and the risk it poses.  I find that to inherently be more ‘appropriate’.”

Kato bows his head slightly.  “You have risen to be House Master of Imarra.  Your wisdom and judgement have proven true to permit it.  My path has led me here.  We will see if my wisdom and judgement have also been proven true.”

“Indeed.”

"Preparations"
Manor House, Outskirts of Ceres City
Capella
November 14, 3053

Security had been stepped up around the arrival of Ion Rush, and appears to be once again with the anticipated arrival of the Master of Ceremonies for the investiture.  It strikes some as a bit odd that the Duke would arrive two days in advance.  It is a confusion that is quickly rectified as the convoy pulls up to the estate and the assembled though it is not in fact the Duke of Capella whose arrival is being honored.  Exiting the other vehicles are a large number of security personnel including significant numbers of Death Commandos who take up a secure perimeter prior to the limo coming to a stop and the door opened.  Stepping out of the limo is James Teng, the Confederation’s Strategic Military Director.  Both Kasei and Ion greet him, neither appear surprised by the appearance.  As the three men and then the rest of you filter in, the Death Commandos and additional security do as well.  The Rangers are informed that non-citizens will not be permitted any weapons ceremonial or otherwise while the SMD is present.

-----------

Shortly after the announcement about weapons is made, Rosk sends a note to Hiro.

"Hiro, I understand the need for security. I happen to have a katana with my, a mark of my graduation from Sun Zhang. I would be honored if you could hold it for me until such a time that the need for strictest security is ended."

It is less than an hour later that there is a knock on Rosk's door.  Opening it he finds Hiro standing outside in dress uniform including a pair of white gloves.  "I have come to honor your request."

Rosk goes over to a long thin pine box, tied with a green silk band. He unties it, revealing a black saya with silver script on it. He picks up the entire box, and brings it to Hiro.

"Thank you. It was been good to get to know you over these weeks. I cannot imagine the amount of pressure you are under right now, and so it means a great deal that you have taken time to honor me with this."

Hiro takes it with the appropriate respect.  "If only more of the Rangers were like you."

Rosk bows and replies, "The painting is almost done. I shall make sure it is complete after the investiture."

Returning the bow Hiro responds, "I look forward to seeing it then."

-----------

Much as when Ion arrived a dinner is held is his honor with family and guests present.  There is far more of a security presence though.  The estate is a full armed camp with security present in every hall, building and courtyard.  Given the importance of them men in attendance it’s only natural.  There is peace and solitude in your quarters but even there the sounds of soldiers’ footsteps in the halls beyond intrude upon the stillness.  At the dinner the majority of conversations are spoken in Mandarin unless interacting directly with the Ranger tables.  With them sit familiar members of the security details who serve as translators when necessary.  Out of respect for the guests, speeches and toasts are provided in English – some more heavily accented than others.  After the speeches end, Teng addresses a comment to Kato in Mandarin which receives a short reply.  When not immediately translated but asked, the translator shares that the Colonel was asked to a private meeting with the Strategic Military Director the following day and the Colonel had replied that he’d be honored.

-----------

The following day Kato arrives once again at his grandfather’s study, a pair of Death’s Commandos standing guard outside in place of the Atayde Guard that had been stationed there.  Upon his arrival he is ushered in to where Teng waits with another pair of Death Commandos placed as unobtrusively as possible.  Kato bows and Teng nods before gesturing to a seat.  Once seated, Teng looks at him.

“Your story is an unusual one.  Were it not for the unwavering loyalty of your grandfather, his dedication to the Confederation and the evidence he has shared with us on your motivations and your actions, we would not be having this conversation now, much less seriously considering elevating you to nobility and Sheng no less.  So.  I wish to hear it from you.”

Kato is a bit surprised but happy to relate it.  “Where would you like me to begin and how much of it do you want to hear?”

“From the beginning, and all of it.”

“That will take some time…”

“Then you had best begin.”

He nods and then starts, speaking of his family’s history briefly touching on Echo company, the Nishamura family, the involvement with the 4th Tau Ceti Rangers and both their Star League origins and traditions as well as the close ties with the Confederation after the fall of the Star League.  Not wishing to spend much time on ancient history he moves on and puts it in context with his family very much holding to those Star League traditions and ideals.  They were loyal to the Confederation, but at their core they adhered to the principles of the Star League far more so than the three that govern Capellan Philosophy.  It was that true devotion that permitted the Federated Suns to accept them as nobles as well as confirm their children and other family members in similar circumstances.  This isn’t to say it wasn’t without restriction, but it was manageable and acceptable.

Kato spoke of his appreciation and great respect for the philosophies the Confederation was founded on and still governed by.  Growing up he saw how people behaved differently as citizens than those who had not earned that status.  It was a process that he had started before the transition first to the Tikonov Free Republic and then just a couple of years later to the Federated Suns.  Completing it helped bring peace to a chaotic time and he enjoyed helping people and providing protection and service back to the citizens.  It was the rock that he held onto in the midst of turbulent seas.

Teng interrupts him at this point, “You had a scholarship and a place at the Capellan War College available to you.  If you felt the call then, why did you turn away?”

“I was already pledged to be Grandfather’s heir.  At sixteen I believed that door would always remain open.  Should I have gone to the Capellan War College so quickly after the end of the 4th Succession War, I wasn’t certain whether I would see my parents or younger siblings again.  I am not as indoctrinated as my parents, but I believe largely that the principles of the Star League were good ones.  Once I committed to NAMA, my path was set for the foreseeable future.”

“So, you claim poor judgement led you astray.”

“No, sir.  I believed in my optimism that both things were possible.  That we sit in this room, having this conversation, leads me to believe I was correct.  While the Rangers have fought against the Confederation before, they have not done so while I have been with them.  I have not raised arms against the State either in my time in the AFFS nor in my time leaving it, and I have continued to honor my commitment to the Confederation throughout.”

“Agreed.”  The confirmation catches Kato off guard, but before he can ask he is told to continue.

Kato relates his time at NAMA, meeting his wife there and his reaching the rank of Sergeant Major.  Had he been from a normal Federated Suns family he would have been enrolled in OCS as his marks and performance exceeded others granted that honor.  It was a cost to be paid for his family’s origin and one he’d come to terms with before attending.  He went on to discuss briefly his advanced studies in strategy and tactics before graduation, his conduct in the War of ’39, the incidents that earned him a Silver Sunburst, his first ‘Mech and an invitation to return for further schooling including OCS.  That opportunity pointed to a willingness at least by some to accept him based on his character and talent rather than his origin.  He earned promotion to the rank of Kommandant before a petty Lyran General forced him out.  The reference to the general as “petty” evokes a small chuckle from Teng and he waves at Kato to continue.  Kato speaks of his time with the Rangers the highs and the lows, the challenges and the rewards and the circumstances leading to his promotion to Commanding Officer.  Finally he covers his tenure as CO and all of the events up through arrival on Capella.  Throughout Teng asks enough questions to tease out details that make it clear he is extremely well informed on Kato’s background.  It also becomes clear that Teng has personally reviewed gun camera footage from at least a couple of Kato’s fights against Clan Jade Falcon as Teng digs further into how the Rangers were successful against the Clans when so many other units were ripped to shreds and destroyed.  Hours pass in the process, but neither of the two men mind.  They wrap up their conversation with a bit of a return to philosophy and how Kato’s insistence on leaving no one behind is an extension of the Lorix Order with those under his command both protectors and citizens in this extension.

Eventually Teng stands signaling an end to the interview, with Kato rising as well.  “This has been a good conversation.  It has been nice to hear your story firsthand.  I look forward to your elevation tomorrow,” and with that pronouncement leaves, the Death Commandos in the room going with him and Kato now comfortable that things will progress as expected.

"Investiture"
Manor House, Outskirts of Ceres City
Capella
November 16, 3053

The day dawns bright and clear, a good sign for the events ahead.  With the investiture planned for the afternoon, the morning was spent in final preparations including extensive security reviews of the grounds and individuals present.  People grab a light lunch to tide them over until the celebration after.  The ceremony is to take place in the receiving hall.  Centuries old, it was lovingly tended.  While it lacks the immediate impact that other halls achieve by being decorated with large quantities of precious metals and stone, it is impressive, nonetheless.  Intricate wood carvings and reliefs of various different woods and hues give texture and depth to the work.  Klaus recognizes many of the woods used based on his discussions and research and is pleased to spot others he would have to inquire about later.  Judicious use of jade within the wood carvings as well as use of marble and other stone gives the room a gravitas in excess of the materials used to create it.  All in all, it is a real testament to the skill of the artisans who created it.  Decorative wooden arches and intricate windows add to the ambiance with sunlight streaming through, and campaign banners decorating some walls.  Light is otherwise provided by green decorative lanterns that add some additional color to the room.  At the far end is a dais with just a couple of steps, upon which is a wooden throne done in the same style as the room, a pair of dragons intertwined and decorated with jade and bits of gold.  Based on the craftsmanship it appears to have been made at the same time as the hall.  The throne is reserved for Strategic Military Director Teng.

Hiro enters first in his dress uniform, an honor guard of the 4th with him.  He is followed by Kato in his dress uniform, his honor guard a mixture of Rangers and his new personal guard as Mandrinn.  As eight is considered a particularly lucky number within the culture and groups of eight equally so, there are eight Rangers and eight Atayde Guardsmen.  The Rangers include Lt. Colonel Benton Mudd, Captain Klaus Briesacher, Major Erik Kronwall Captain William Moon, Lieutenant Mary Johns a Midnight Tech and the last of Kato’s original lance, Major Amy Bray, Captain Andromeda Clark and Captain Carleen Fawkes.  The Atayde Guards are led by Captain Carey Fletcher, formerly of Midnight and seven other men and women Kato had handpicked.  Then comes Grandfather, Ion Rush and finally James Teng carrying a ceremonial staff, all with their respective guards.  The only one not in a dress uniform is Kasei Atayde who is dressed in formal robes.  Ion and Kasei are seated off to the side with an excellent and close view of the proceedings, sitting in front of Kato’s family present for the occasion.  The principles sit in the front, their honor guard with them and the security detail seated immediately behind the Rangers able to provide translations if desired.  All the Rangers are offered an earbud through which the ceremony will be translated from Mandarin into English.  Failing that a member of their detail will lean forward and quietly share the translation.

No program is provided though it’s known that Hiro’s investiture will be first, followed by Kato’s.  Striking the staff three times on the dais, Teng opens the ceremonies.

“Hiro Yamamori, Lieutenant Colonel of the 4th Tau Ceti Rangers.  Come forward.”

Hiro rises gracefully and comes to stand at the base of the dais in front of Teng.  Teng spends several minutes exhorting the skill, bravery and loyalty of Hiro and his service to both the 4th and to the Confederation.  Therefore, in thanks for his service, he is made Mandrinn of Shaanxi on Sian, transferred to the 2nd Battalion of the Red Lancers and confirmed as their commanding officer as Zhong-Shao (Lt. Colonel).  There is a brief moment when he’s named Mandrinn that the pride he clearly feels flickers but rapidly vanishes especially after being named to the Red Lancers.  He drops to a knee and swears once again his loyalty to the Capellan Confederation, House Liao and the Chancellor.  Rising, Teng congratulates him and the newly minted Mandrinn sits down.

“Kato Atayde, Colonel and commanding officer of the Numenorean Rangers.  Come forward.”

As did Hiro, he rises gracefully and comes to stand before him.  “You stand before me today to be invested as the Sheng Mandrinn of Ceres City and to be formally and publicly acknowledged as the heir to Shonso Kasei Atayde’s Shonsonate.  That time though, is not yet here.  Before that there is another matter which must be addressed first.”  Teng gestures for Kato to face the assembled, then shifts his attention to address them.

“The man who stands before you today has not taken a typical path to arrive here.  Named at birth as the heir to his grandfather’s legacy and Mandrinn title, his older brother heir to the family Shonsonate on Epsilon Eridani,” eyes flickering to Hiro for just a moment, “he was at the time on a familiar path.  That was before my predecessor Pavel Ridzik betrayed the Confederation, cut a deal with the Fox himself and set up his own realm, the Tikonov Free Republic.”  Individuals familiar with history will find that description accurate if overly simplified.  “Epsilon Eridani was one of those worlds.”

Teng is a skilled orator, pulling the assembled along with him.  “Kato’s parents were accepted as nobles and confirmed as Count and Countess after careful review and scrutiny.  Of course, this review and scrutiny came from MIIO, so that may explain a few things.  We can only hope that his parents are as faithful to the Confederation’s principles and philosophies now as they were then.”  There’s some minor chuckling in the audience at the dig taken against the vaunted intelligence service.

“Kato had been working towards his citizenship before Epsilon Eridani became part of the Tikonov Free Republic and later the Federated Commonwealth.  Despite being a young man of just 13 when he was ripped away from the Confederation and his response to the chaos that followed was to attend to his fellow citizens.  During the transition period, Kato worked diligently to ensure the people his family were responsible for were well taken care of and protected, including in assisting with resettling people who wished to remain within the Capellan Confederation.  For these efforts and others, and despite not still being a part of the Capellan Confederation, he petitioned and was granted citizenship.”

Some quiet murmuring follows the lengths he went through.  Teng picks up the story.  “As I mentioned, MIIO confirmed his parents in continuing their noble rank and spent time evaluating Kato and his remaining siblings as well.  In the end he was accepted and granted full citizenship and privileges within their realm, despite his refusal to renounce his Capellan citizenship.  He was offered enrollment and scholarships to Nagelring, NAIS College of Military Sciences as well as the Capellan War College.  Here he made the unusual choice to enroll on the NAIS College of Military Sciences.  A choice his detractors say demonstrates his perfidy.”

“Despite intelligence, talent and skill demonstrated during his training, he was denied a position in their officer candidate school because of his heritage.  Though not making officer while at the academy he distinguished himself and then acquitted himself well during the War of ’39 at Halstead Station.  With their RCT being hard pressed by two elite regiments of the 2nd Swords of Light, a company was cut off as his commanding general sounded the retreat.  Asked to go rescue them it was clear the General had written them off and if Kato wanted to go get himself killed, the General was happy to write him off as well.  Clearly, events unfolded differently.  He singlehandedly penetrated enemy lines, made contact with the cut off company and led them and their ‘Mechs through the field to safety just before the last of the dropships were taking off.  He was given a Silver Sunburst, sent to Albion and OCS and by the time of graduation had been promoted to Major.  Pettiness on the part of his former commanding general forced him to leave his service and join up with the Rangers.”

“In the Rangers he has risen through the ranks from a junior lieutenant to Colonel and commanding officer.  He has shared with the Confederation detailed information about the Clans including gun camera footage from Somerset, Sudeten and finally Tukayyid.  His unit was successful against the Clans when most were gutted or destroyed.  He has shared the tactics and strategies employed against them.”  Teng’s tenor and pacing picking up and driving to a conclusion.  “He is man of honor and great Spirit who fulfilled his contract to his former liege despite them trying to assassinate him.  Twice.  A man who does not abandon those under his command, but like the State looks out for the welfare of all of those under his care, even at great personal risk to himself.  His character and honor so admirable that even after renouncing being heir to the County on Epsilon Eridani and his Federated Commonwealth citizenship, the Archon Steiner herself publicly thanked him for his service and wished him well.”  Teng pauses to let that sink in.  Unseen to Kato as his back is to him, Teng reaches into a pocket and pulls out a box.  “For all this and more he is awarded the Confederation Master at Arms.”

Kato’s surprise was evident as he turned to face Teng who held the badge accorded with the title.  “Kato Atayde, the State recognizes your strategic skill, the breadth of your contributions to the Capellan military as a result of your service against the Clans, and your demonstrated mastery of the battlefield.  Congratulations.”  Hardy cheers erupt from those in attendance at the honor bestowed.

Teng moves on to Kato’s investiture as Mandrinn and once done and having accepted Kato’s oath of loyalty, gestures for Kasei and Ion to approach.  Kasei carries an ornate dao sword in sheath.  “I Sheng Shonso of Llagarres Kasei Atayde do name and acknowledge Kato Atayde my designated heir.  As a sign of that designation, I present him with the Atayde family dao, passed down through the generations and given by the first Chancellor Franco Liao to our ancestor just after his elevation from Duke in 2367 to the Chancellorship at the founding of the Confederation.  The blade has been impeccably maintained and carried into battle for nearly 700 years.  May it serve you well.*”

There is cheering again after his confirmation and presentation of the blade.  As Kasei turns to step away, Ion places a hand on his shoulder.  “Not so fast, my friend.”  Ion looks at Teng who nods and then Ion continues.  “Though your fighting days are long behind you, your promotion to Sheng Shonso was not just for past service rendered but in expectation of service still to come.  I am pleased to inform you that you are to fill the open seat in the House of Scions to serve the next 12 years as duty demands and share your wisdom with the Confederation.  Congratulations!”

Kasei’s usual unflappable demeanor is rocked by the revelation.  Before he can form a question, Ion beats him to it.  “I was given the honor of informing you by the Chancellor himself when he learned I would already be at an appropriate ceremony.”

Kasei’s response is a bow of humility and gratitude for the honor, first to Ion and then to Teng.  The cheering and excitement are loud, and it takes some time for things to calm down.  Once done, Teng closes the ceremony with another three strikes of his staff.  “Here we are done.  I believe a celebration feast has been prepared in honor of our three recipients.”

* [[--as a game effect, should you choose to carry the Dao in the cockpit, it will incur a +2 penalty to Kato’s ejection PSRs.  However, the link to the traditional Capellan past is inspiring to those under your command. As long as Kato is conscious on the battlefield, he may donate 1 point of Edge per battle to any Lance Leader of Capellan nationality, or any Midnight Lance member of any nationality. This may be performed at any time, and may be used for a reroll even in the event that Lancer Leader or Midnight Lance member has already spent Edge on that roll. It may only be “spent,” and may not be “burnt” to guarantee that person’s survival, however.]]

"Teaching Moments"
Capellan War College
Capella
Mid to Late November, 3053

A comment Teng made at the Investiture gave Kathrin Hitzig an idea where she’d seen the woman before – gun camera footage.  With the investiture complete and security relaxed at the departure of the various guests, movement to and from the dropship to get access to the material.  It was sometime in the last three years which narrowed things down.  She figured she’d start with her most recent footage from ANGEL and work her way back.  It would take time, but time was something she had to spare at the moment.

-----------

Rosk is standing and waiting. He is looking at a familiar easel, but without paints this time. He looks around, waiting for Hiro's arrival. The view shifts to the painting, and we see a painting, not an expert quality but advanced beginner at best. In the center is an ox shape backgrounded by a mailed fist. There is a green burst coming from the gauntlet, with golden lines running through the green. It’s a smaller painting, about 6 in by 6 in.

Having discussed with Rosk where to meet him to return his blade, Hiro arrives again in his dress uniform with white gloves, carrying the blade with him.  "Lt. Roskakoriinnen.  I return your blade to you."  Though likely curious about what's on the easel, his focus is on the man and the exchange.  There is a sense of a ritual about the process.

With motions that both have familiarity to them, but a stiffness of being out of practice, Rosk adjusts his obi, fixing the know. He bows to Hiro, accepts the blade and now moving with swiftness tucks the blade in the obi. "My thanks, Lt. Colonel Yamamori, for the safekeeping of my blade." There is a definite emphasis on colonel, not mocking but drawing attention. "This gift you have presented me in my blades safekeeping is much more than was required of you, and for that you have my thanks." Rosk bows again, and pauses to indicate the end of the ritual. After the break, Rosk turns towards that painting and continues, "I found out duty will require that you leave for your new post tomorrow. I hope that you continue to grow and thrive in the new command, as you have in the past." Rosk appears to be trying to formulate other words, but they escape him for the moment.

There is a slight ripple of a reaction to the note of Colonel, fleeting and barely noticed.  He nods as seems appropriate at the end of the ritual, then returns the bow.  "Thank you.  I wish you great success with the Rangers or another fitting command," he responds, struggling a bit with words, though his command of Japanese while not fluent has been sufficient.  He starts the turn to leave, pauses and turns back.  "There is... perhaps... more of the Kato I remember from when he was young left than I... thought.  He might benefit from talks such as these, if you're so inclined.  I would welcome your insights on such discussions if you have them."  Though he hides it well, it is clear he is conflicted with many eddies and currents.  Seeking to move to safer grounds he glances over at the painting.  "I confess I do not see the meaning in what you have painted, though would be interested in your intent should you be willing to share."  Rosk can sense that the admission is out of character from what at least most would expect.  At the same time he believes it to be genuine as well.  He looks as if he intends to say more, or ask something, but the words never come.

Moving on to safer topics, Rosk starts to explain the painting. "I did most of the painting in the morning, which along with conversations lead to the overall sunburst theme. I struggled to find a theme to paint on, as for a long time I thought I was painting this for someone else. Yet this time away from the daily stress and grind of mercenary life showed that I needed to reflect on myself. With Chinese zodiac signs, I was born under the ox most likely and so that was I placed at the core. The mailed fist was not originally in my mind, but as I reflected here, I was reminded that at my core I am a fighter. Whether fighting an enemy in a ‘Mech, or fighting for the poorest of the poor forgotten I discovered here that both are the same. This was an ...interesting time away from combat, and while I did some needed reflection, I found the balance I needed not in the stories from my people but from a people who hold similar but different values."

There is a bit of relief evident when Rosk shares that the painting is self-reflective.  "I was curious about the bull and the zodiac but wasn't sure if it was more of a Taurian reference for some reason as you're not Han.  Balance though is good.  It can be hard to find.  I do recommend you read the Korvin Doctrine, the Sarna Mandate and the Lorix Order or reread them if you have already.  Again, to get perhaps a slightly different perspective in more detail.  Should you wish to speak in the future, I would welcome it.  Should you decide to return or come to Sian, I am sure we can provide appropriate supplies."  There's a slight smile when he says this, and you sense the offer goes beyond mere paints and canvas.

Rosk chuckles slightly at the invitation. "Thank you for the recommendation on leadership, as I'm always looking for new, sorry not new but new ways to look at the proper old ideas. I don't get many invitations in my line of work, but if circumstances work out, I would like to see Sian." Rosk switches to Mandarin, which sounds like memorized phrases at worse, but there is a beginning of understanding the language. "It has been my honor to have these conversations with you, and the hospitality you have shown me is beyond conversation. I will certainly keep in touch, although HPG rates being what they are now you have to wonder about Comstar. I wish you all the success with the Red Lancers, and would also welcome further letters."

Hiro's smile grows a bit with the clear effort to speak in his native tongue.  "Thank you.  It has been an honor to speak with you as well and good to know there may be other more reasonable influences on my brother.  As opportunity permits, we will speak again."  He bows to Rosk.

Sensing the conversation coming to an end, Rosk responds, "I will continue to try. If we were both in different professions, here would be where I would say that I hope to see you again soon. Instead, I will stay in touch, but I never want to see you again until we are both old men and retired. Take care, and I hope I am not being to presumptuous saying this, take care my friend."

"I would be happy to see you sooner on the same side of the battlefield, as allies and friends," he responds acknowledging the friendship.  "Take care as well.  And may you not just survive, but prosper."  With that he bows once more and leaves.

-----------

The flight from Ceres City to the Capellan War College was manageable.  Kato was invited to speak as a guest lecturer covering the Clans and his experiences with them along with battle armor deployment and tactics.  One of the perks or duties of his being named a Confederation Master at Arms.  Many of the instructors there already shared the same distinction and he’d have a chance to speak and learn from them as well.

During the week he was gone, Erin Mae would be finalizing their selection of a tutor she was comfortable with.  He expected the Rangers would be fine.  They’d already been here for four weeks and while some certainly chafed under the constant presence of the security details, they made the most of it.  It was strange for him.  He would be spending a week without seeing anyone he knew.  That hadn’t happened since his Academy days nearly twenty years earlier.

Settling in went smoothly as did several of the early lectures.  Occasionally tough questions, but he had the experience and gun cam footage to pull from.  The students by and large were the easy part.  The faculty was another matter.  He found himself in debates over the use and success rates of different tactics he deployed and how much fortune factored into them.  While spirited they lacked the animus of the arguments he’d had with his brother.  There was still a wariness to the welcome, eased just a bit when it became clear he had no intention of leaving the Rangers anytime soon.  The arguments though pushed him to reexamine his assumptions, to refine the strategies he’d deployed and to find opportunities for improvement to take advantage of in the future.  Likewise, he was able to push some of the others to think in different ways and was satisfied to see them depart at times with thoughtful expressions.  Ultimately the beneficiaries of those ponderings would be the warriors trained within these walls.

In his free time in the late afternoon and evenings he was able to avail himself of time with the sword master at the school.  He was able to train with the family dao, getting used to the weight and the way it handled.  His grandfather had not exaggerated – it had been meticulously maintained.  So, in addition to some refinement of forms and the opportunity to spar against a true master, the finer points for the care of the blade were also covered.  Much he already knew but there were some tips and tricks that would help ensure that when he passed it onto one of his children, it would be in the same shape it was then.

As the week ended and he headed back, it had been time well spent.  Whether intentional or not, it served as a mini-sabbatical, and he looked forward to seeing his family and discovering what challenges lay ahead for the Rangers.

"Pointed Questions"
Manor House, Outskirts of Ceres City
Capella
November 22, 3053

Kato returned to find that not much had changed.  He had said goodbye to Hiro and the rest of his family before he’d departed for the War College as then expected to depart within a few days of the investiture.  He had been worried that the additional accolades that had been given to Kato would have caused Hiro’s hostility to flare up again.  It was evident that he was less thrilled with getting a Barduk rather than Sheng title.  That said, he had no family of his own, so passing along any title at the moment was moot.  So, while satisfied with his new station might be an overstatement, mollified certainly applied and the hostility that might be driven from this would be directed elsewhere.  Kato had not requested or lobbied for the additional honors which mitigated things in his favor.

He had been happy to learn that the Maskirova had departed two days after his investiture.  With them gone along with his extended family, the manor was much more peaceful.  He would need to finalize the officers for his Atayde Guard force at the estate.  Getta Milos had been impressed with what she had seen of Capella, and he’d been surprised to discover she spoke fluent Mandarin.  He intended to offer her an officer position which would mean a promotion.  It would also give Carey a familiar face to hang onto while Kato and the rest were away.

One of the first orders of business he wanted to attend to upon returning though was the matter of the assassination attempt.  He’d heard nothing from his grandfather while he was gone and was sure that Benton was not happy about the lack of information.  He had sent word ahead that he wanted to speak to his grandfather about it upon his return and was told to attend him in the receiving hall.  Arriving he discovered that most of the rest of his command staff were present, some were still trickling in.  With them, speaking with Kasei was Lt. Zin.  The Lieutenant notices Kato almost immediately and smiles.  “Good.  You’re here.  We can begin.”  Kato glances around to figure out where everyone will sit when Zin gestures to the throne on the dais.  “I believe that is where you belong.”  Glancing over at his grandfather, Kasei nods.  “You are the noble in residence, and this is your hall.”

Kato nods and starts heading that way.  Those who know him best realize it’s a bit uncomfortable for him, but he ascends and sits comfortably, his eyes on Zin.  “I am guessing you have news then.”

“Oh indeed.  We’ve captured the assassin and gotten a full confession from her.  One you will hear shortly as well.  I have a couple of my men bringing her in.”

“And who is she?”

Zin smiles contentedly.  “A MIIO agent.”

Mudd frowns.  “MIIO?  I told Kato I didn’t think it was necessarily you, but while I have other enemies, MIIO feels like a stretch.”

Zin snorts.  “If I were going to assassinate you here on Capella, it wouldn’t have been in anything close to the slap dash method she used.  Besides, if I were going to do it, I’d want you to know it was me.”

“You did say it would be awful if a tragic accident happened to me as it almost did to Hiro, though for you to take the coward’s way out by attempting to poison me…” Benton points out and then goads, trying to get a rise out of Zin.

The lieutenant waves it off.  “A bit of verbal sparring given the courtesy requested by two decorated members of the nobility,” he explains.  “You think I’d be so crude in my threat or use such a base method?”

“Well, no,” Mudd responds.  “But your Tong ancestors and my family have been trying to kill each other for a millennia, so perhaps you tried something new?”

“Why bother when I could kill you with my bare hands?”

“So you admit to planning to kill me here?”

“No, it would just be so easy to do if I chose.”

“Gentlemen,” Kato interjects, “It is fair to point out that the ‘clumsiness’ could in fact simply be a bit of misdirection to throw suspicion off the obvious choice, because it is a little too pat.”  Kathrin enters along with Malthus chatting quietly before joining the others in chairs towards the front.

Zin’s smile is genuine, “Ah.  Nice to see your sensitivity to tactics and strategy extends beyond the battlefield and into politics.  It’s hard to get any more deadly than politics.  You have good instincts.  Still need to be refined, but I believe that’s what Rush said too.”  Kato didn’t bother asking how Zin learned about the details of a private conversation with the House Master.

“We should really see about finding a way to end the feud with our generation, don’t you think?”

The lieutenant actually pauses to consider.  “Well, given you’re showing enough openmindedness to follow a Capellan noble into battle and to faithfully serve him, perhaps there is room to bury the hatchet.”

"He was a Davion noble up until a few months ago, and our forebears served together in Echo Company of the 741st."

"Well, he's not a Davion noble anymore, he's a Capellan noble and you're still following.  May still be worth burying the hatchet."

“I was thinking more a ‘Mech duel to the death.”

“Well in that case, that also could be arranged.  Though of all your family you actually show promise.  I’m not sure I want to destroy you.”

“As much ‘fun’ as this is watching the two of you throw insults back and forth, can we get down to dealing with the actual issue?  MIIO is a convenient choice given our run in with them recently, again almost too pat,” Will Moon adds.  “And you’ve had plenty of time to manufacture evidence or even a scapegoat if you wanted to.  Why should we believe this is the real deal?”

“Because it is, and you’ll get to hear it straight from her mouth… and here she is now.”

The timing is uncanny, and it’s unclear if he signaled the other two commandos or if they truly did just happen to appear as if on cue.  A familiar looking blonde woman enters flanked on either side by Death Commandos.  There are a couple of things that strike you immediately.  Other than perhaps a bit tired, she looks none the worse for wear.  No bruises, cuts or bandages are in evidence on her face, neck, or arms or elsewhere through the clothing.  No telltale signs that needles were used for injections and her eyes are bright and clear which would eliminate being on drugs.  Her pallor is healthy, and she doesn’t look like she’s been malnourished.  Perhaps more surprising, she is not restrained.  No handcuffs, bindings, collars, or fetters limit her movement and while her eyes start scanning the room immediately upon entry, cataloguing people and details, she makes no effort to escape though exudes a self-confidence that’s surprising in the situation.

As she and her captors near the front, Zin steps into view, having screened himself from observation using the other people present.  Seeing him she staggers as if struck by a physical blow, clearly terrified of Zin, and eyes actively scanning for a way out – to be anywhere but in the presence of that man.  To help ensure that something untoward doesn’t happen each Death Commando takes hold of her upper arm on her side effectively trapping her here.

“Lt. Hitzig.  This is the woman you saw in the restaurant and who has been confirmed to have delivered the poisoned chess set?”

Kathrin nods.  “It is.  And I can prove…”

Zin looks at her pointedly and raises a hand to stop her.  “Why don’t we let her confess and then you can corroborate what you know, shall we?”  Kathrin turns and looks at Kato who shrugs slightly.  “Ok.”

Zin smiles once again.  “Splendid.  Now Mandy,” he says turning and addressing her, his gaze causing her to flinch back.  “Why don’t you share with me what you’re doing here, starting with who you are and who your target is.”  He steps back, letting focus fall squarely on her.

She swallows and looks around, settling to look at Kato who’s seated as if in judgement of her.  She glances back at Zin, shudders and begins.  “My name is Mandy Pattergee-Hasek, MIIO.  I was part of the forces on Vanra that attempted to destroy Colonel Atayde and attacked the rest of his command to get to him.”

“Here?”

“Here my target was Roger Banzai,” she notes her face hardening as she stares at Roger, “who operates under the alias of Benton Mudd.  My district commander believed it would be unconscionable to allow someone with direct ties to Dr. Banzai to fall under the sway of the Capellan Confederation.  It would be better for him to be dead than betray us!” she states with venom.  Roger seems taken aback.

“I wouldn’t betray my family like that.”

“And you would have gotten a hero’s funeral and likely a Federated Commonwealth Medal of Honor for your sacrifice!”

“But I’d be dead!”

“But your loyalty would have been assured!”

"And who is your district commander?" Mudd asks.

"Kommandant Teresa Flynn," Mandy answers.  She looks at Kato.  "I know she meets regularly with Leftenant General Sarah Delittle."

Roger looks at Kato.  "Isn't that the general that hates you?"

Kato shrugs.  "One of two.  She's the one in the Capellan March on Valexa as opposed to General Nial Slattery who's on Tsitsang."

"You sure know how to pick them, don't you Kato?"

"This is likely to sour the Kommandant on coming after you.  All of you.  Three attempts, three failures.  Not good for one's career."

Kato looks away from the fanatic to Hitzig.  “It’s true Colonel.  She is Kommandant Mandy Pattergee-Hasek.  I knew I’d seen her before, and I had.  I just started looking in the wrong place.  I was convinced - correctly - that I had seen her in gun-camera footage, which I had.  I had assumed that it was in fact mine.  It wasn’t.  It was Captain Moon’s.  She piloted the Battlemaster in MIIO’s ambush of the Rangers on Vanra and punched out when her ‘Mech was destroyed.  Moon had been trying to capture her, but she slipped away.  I’d reviewed the footage after the ambush.  It’s why it took so long for me to find it.”

Mandy turns and looks at Kato.  “Please!  You understand loyalty in service to a State!”  She throws herself to the ground in front of the dais Kato sits on.  “You’re an honorable man, I beg you for mercy!  Spare my life.”

There is silence for a few moments while Kato considers the possible outcomes and ramifications.  Ultimately, he shakes his head. “No.  You have forfeited any claim to mercy through repeated attempts to kill members of my command through ambush and deceit.  You have said death is a way to preserve the loyalty of the condemned.  I will grant you what you have offered Roger.”  Zin watches the events unfold with interest.

“As Mandrinn of Ceres City and Commanding Officer of the Numenorean Rangers, you are sentenced to death for multiple assassination attempts and the murder of Soon-hee Yu.”  He stands and strides from the dais down the steps, loosening the sword in his scabbard.  “Bring her,” he commands, and the two Death Commandos bring their charge with them, Zin and the others filtering out behind him.  He leads them out of the manor entirely and to a small clearing close to the manor’s entrance.  “I will not sully the grounds of my home with your blood.”  He fluidly draws the ancestral dao as the two death commandos force her to her knees, the back of her neck exposed.  “I grant you a minute to make peace with your God or whatever higher power if any you believe in.”

Mandy takes the time granted to her, head bent her whispers audible only to herself.  Her whispers go on for several minutes, though Kato seems content to let her do so.  Eventually she finishes and nods once slightly, head still bent.  Kato’s strike is quick and true.  The blade cleaves her head from her body, killing her instantly.  He stands silently for a moment, head bowed perhaps offering a prayer for her soul or whatever may come.  He pulls out a cloth and cleans the blood from the blade, then looks up at the two Death Commandos.  “Please make sure her remains are returned to her family and send a note to her district commander.  Let him know that she died in loyal service to the Federated Suns and that her actions and sacrifice warrant recognition with a posthumous award.”

He looks around at the Rangers present making eye contact with each briefly before commenting.  “I take responsibility for this.  It is my job as your commanding officer to see to your safety and wellbeing.  I don’t intend to fail you.”  With that he leads the group back into the manor as the Kommandant’s remains are prepared with honors.

Returning inside a bit worse for wear Moon started to formulate an idea. It quickly vanished however. He had been working out how he could've gotten her maybe a bit of leniency. Maybe a strict labor position in prison or used her as a bargaining chip?  Will might believe in the FedCom, and would have preferred for her not to die, but that was strike three. The woman held no honor and after hearing the reason she acted, he was convinced even more she wasn't worth saving.

He spoke up.  "Hard thing to do Kato. Glad my cam footage helped. I wasn't sure what you were after since we didn't have a great description.  I didn't think too much of it since MIIO should've called them off. Again, trust MIIO with a grain of salt."  He pauses, then offers, "We could've got something out of the FedCom possibly, but I'd sure not want her to be back at us again. Wish I had went out with them and gotten a good look. She definitely had a face to remember."

Thinking to himself that Flynn had now sent three kill missions on the Rangers and would not get mercy from Moon. There wouldn't be a tribunal, only a body in an alley.

"At least she gave us the name of the regional director.  That's something."

Kato nods.  "Someone to watch out for.  General Delittle is stirring up a fair amount of trouble.  We can hope Mandy was right, and Flynn will stop dancing to her tune.  I'd rather not have to keep watching out for MIIO assassins."

A formal dinner was planned for the evening of the 29th in his grandfather’s honor.  With the estates now officially Kato’s it was time for his grandfather to return to his own.  Kato’s staff was already in place and his grandfather would ensure it was taken care of properly.  He and his family would move into the master suite after his grandfather’s departure.  It was strange to think that he finally had a home that didn’t regularly break atmosphere and travel between the stars.  Pleasant though.

He reviewed Erin Mae’s selection of tutor and was impressed with how insightful she’d been in cataloguing the different candidates’ strengths and weaknesses.  He couldn’t fault her judgement or final selection and was happy with it.  She and the kids would have to deal with the woman far more often than he.  He expected there was a good chance the woman was a Maskirova agent, but if so, there was little he could do about it.  Besides, he expected he already had one or more of them in the unit, so one more wouldn’t matter much.

The dinner went well.  It was clear how fond the staff was of him and how much they would miss him.  Thankfully he could stop by periodically which would make it easier on all involved.

The following morning Kato, Erin Mae, the kids, and Grandfather shared an intimate breakfast as an opportunity to say goodbye in private.

“You have done well, granddaughter.  Had the Maskirova not been satisfied with your answers either they would not have left yet, or you would have gone with them.  I am proud of you and the poise you showed in the face of adversity.  Well done.”  Erin Mae was touched by the sentiment as Grandfather wasn’t very free with his complements.

“And you Kato.  I still believe you have much to prove to be generally accepted within the broader ranks, but you are off to a good start.  I will continue to oversee things here so that when you return, all will be in order.”

“Thank you, Grandfather.  I have no doubt that all will be as it should.  I look forward to when we will next be able to meet in person.”

Kasei nods in response.  The rest of breakfast passes and the family says their goodbyes and sees him off.  They travel back through the outer gate, wandering through the outer courtyard and then transitioning to the inner courtyard finding it empty but filled with a serenity that has been a rare commodity in their lives.  Picking up Kenji and carrying Dai Eiko they head into the master residence and though they will likely depart in a mere week or two, begin to settle into the next phase of life.
