Following your engagement at Allied Areospace, the escape and extraction from Bordon went practically perfectly.  The only member of your company seriously put out seemed to be Orlov, who was somewhat the worse for wear after a 10 kilometer flight with a death grip on the foot casing of Banzai's misappropriated Shadow Hawk LAM.  Under strategic (and thankfully distant, given the EM interference at that latitude) orbital bombardment from the Theisman and Harrington, you are able to break contact and are picked up by your DropShips on schedule and with no problems.  It's like everything is going TOO well.

Naturally, that meant things were about to take a turn for the worse.  Boy-howdy, did they.

Your jump from Bordon to a planetless (and thus undefended) star 4 light-years coreward of Dieudonne went without a hitch, and you lay doggo for the 5 days the abnormally hot star took to recharge your jump drives.  It was during the spinup to jump outsystem to friendly Steiner space, however, that things went horribly wrong.  Harrington developed a serious fault in her jump drives when one of the crew's cats - a feline called Halsey, purported to be abnormally intelligent - managed to gnaw his way through a hydrogen transfer seal for some unknown feline reason and short the entire system.  The entire task group aborted their jump at that point and sat there, unmoving in space, for another two weeks while engineers worked frantically to repair the system.

Eventually, the seal was repaired fully enough to risk a short jump.  Luckily, the jointly-held Free Worlds/Star League world of Wing is barely 10 light-years distance; close enough to risk the jump.  The planet is likely to be a neutral harbor (given the presence of FWL troops to counterbalance any RWR forces) and the world is known for precisely the heavy metal mines on its four moons that will be required to fully rejuvenate the Harrington - titanium, bauxite, and germanium.  The ship's clock counts down to the jump and you all hold your breath - scared for one brief moment that you'll jump only to materialize in some horrible bizarre alternate universe where the Star League has collapsed completely and you're on a planet full of avian aliens who worship BattleMechs - and then the universe turns inside out and you jump.

The universe rematerializes around you and you slowly open your eyes to find that you've arrived precisely where you intended - in the LaGrange point formed by the gravitational fields of Wing's quadruple moons.  Wing shimmers in your viewports, barely three hours flight time away from your dead stop.  Captain Henke is already on the comm system declaring an emergency to Wing System Control.

Unfortunately, WSC is declaring an emergency right back.  Rim Worlds Forces have begun a series of pre-announced "punitive raids" of FWL holdings which are sheltering refugees.  While the Rim Worlds commander is carefully avoiding excessive direct confrontation with the 14th Marik Militia, and is also avoiding widespread civilian casualties and property damage, they have equally-carefully targeted several civilian refugee holding areas and burnt them to the ground.  The scattered remnants of Star League forces on-planet who took their gear and ran to the shelter of FWL territory have done their best to meet the RWR forces in open ground and stop them, but the best they've been able to do is a series of irregular raids that merely slow down and annoy the RWR juggernaut.  Now the RWR have detached a task force to hit the refugee centers in the old coastal city of Wei, and there's nobody left to stop them.

Nobody but you.

ALL PCS RESTORE 1 POINT OF EDGE FOR FREE BEFORE THIS SCENARIO BEGINS, UP TO THEIR ATTRIBUTE MAXIMUM.  

ALL PC ARMOR AND ACTUATOR DAMAGE IS REPAIRED BEFORE THIS SCENARIO BEGINS.  ALL WEAPONS ARE RELOADED AND/OR REPAIRED.  EACH MECH MAY REPAIR UP TO ONE ENGINE HIT OR ONE GYRO HIT.  EACH PC MAY RESTORE 1 PILOT HIT; ADDITIONAL PILOT HITS WILL REQUIRE A BODY ATTRIBUTE TEST, TN 10+2 PER PILOT HIT TO HEAL.

SCENARIO: A Wing and a Prayer

RULES

1) Battleground: The refugee area is composed of city and coastal maps, and is 3x2 mapsheets in area.

2) Deployment: Both sides must move onto the battlefield from their respective (opposite) board edges.  Land-air-Mechs may start the game up to 1/2 of the way across their home maps' length.

3) Holding Centers: 12 non-hardened Buildings on the maps are designated as refugee areas - 8 by the GM and 4 by the players.  These buildings MUST be on the maps upon which the players deploy.  No more than 2 Buildings may be within 6 hexes of the player's entrance edge.  No objective building may be greater in size than 4 contiguous hexes.  Their specific CF per hex is the default value for their building type.  

4) High Pressure Sunset: Wing is a tropical world with a high atmospheric pressure and temperatures.  These combine to make bleeding off waste heat more difficult.  All 'Mech units generate +4 heat for the first 5 turns of the game, then generate +2 heat for the next 5 turns of the game.  Starting on Turn 11, they generate no additional heat, but Twilight rules are in effect (+1 penalty to all weapon attacks, searchlights do not offset this penalty) for the remainder of the game.  additional heat is NOT generated for units that are immersed in Depth 2 water or which are in Depth 1 water with at least 1 heat sink immersed.

5) Demolition Derby: Wei is a mostly-abandoned city which industry has passed by, which is why it was a perfect place to put lots of refugees.  As a side effect, buildings are treated as completely destructible in this scenario (with minimum CF for their building type).  PCs are responsible for tracking CF on their 2 mapsheets, and NPCs are responsible for tracking CF on their 2 mapsheets.  Basements are randomized as noted in Total Warfare.  It is suggested that players bring copies of Hexpack: Buildings & Roads for the rubble counters.

OBJECTIVES

1) Stand Your Ground: Get Some Skittles Destroy or cripple the Attacker's force.  Each unit destroyed or crippled gains the Star League 1 Victory Point (VP)
2) Preservation: At least half of the objective buildings must survive.  Each building that survives gains the Star League 5 VPs.

RWR OBJECTIVES

1) Destroy the Foe!: Destroy or cripple the Defender's force.  Each unit destroyed or crippled gains the RWR 1 VP.
2) Punitive Damage: Destroy the objective buildings.  Each building destroyed gains the RWR 5 VPs.
3) Burn them to Ash: Each objective building destroyed (reduced to 0 CF) in the same turn it takes damage from a Flame weapon gains the RWR 8 VPs.

How many pilot hits did Orlov have at the end of the previous mission, 4 or 5?  He may be medically out of the fight.

On the high G burn in, Xin requests info on what is available or salvageable in the area to serve as evacuation transport(Administration check to figure out how to evac/if its possible).

(Did this over the phone with Rob, healed total 3 out of 4 pilot hits, entering overall with 1 damage to pilot)

I will be able to fight, but somewhat worse for wear.

In addition, the base commander had a Guillotine on hand that wasn't being used - the pilot was KIA and hadn't found a new home yet, so they gave it to Orlov for use.  Imprinting is easy when you have USB drives...

Major Freund looked solemnly at his command in the ready-room aboard some nameless dropship. Well, it's got a name he reflected, but who can keep track with all the star-hopping we do.

  "Men," he says, including a respectful nod towards Sgt Smythe, "this one is a little different. We've been in some tough scrapes before, but usually we dictate the terms of our engagement; and we come out on top."

A couple heads nod. Sgt Franklin scowls slightly, no doubt recalling all the times the 741st has been on the run, or betrayed, or ambushed. Not wrong certainly, but... "Today is different. Today we aren't here to simply defeat the enemy. We're here to directly protect citizens of the Star League. If we fail, they die. We don't have the luxury of sitting back, using typical tactics to disable their units. We must run straight into their guns, and we must STOP THEM."

Suddenly, Freund's stomach seemed to flip as the dropship rolled end over end and began deceleration procedures. Marshall and Moon both turned a particularly unsettling shade of green. I'll have to talk to them about this new medication I'm on, seems to be working so far.

  "We can't let anyone get by us, we have to stop them all. We swore an oath, and it wasn't to win engagements, it wasn't to minimize damage to ourselves or our mechs. We swore to protect the citizens of the greatest civilization in the history of mankind, and if necessary, to lay down our lives for them. The enemy comes not to make war on us, but on children. Children hiding in the city below us, and we will buy their freedom with our lives. Those are our children.

  "I've fought beside most of you for years now, and I truly believe there's not a finer group of soldiers anywhere. Your courage and loyalty is without question or equal. So, I speak to you now, not to tell you what to be, but to remind you of that which you already are. Don't stop, don't hesitate. Today you are demons and monsters, and when the enemy sees you they will stare into the very face of death. You've got an hour. Go and spend it in whatever way you feel is best."

MSgt Schwepps gathers his lance about him after the CO finishes his pep talk. He reiterates to his lance what the CO has said and adds "we need to target any mechs that have flamers. This is a backwater world and lots of the buildings are made of burnable materials. Lets get ready to rock and roll. Good luck and see you on the turf."

Marshal gamely chokes down the bile at the back of his throat. He quietly walks out of the room and stops by the armory to check out extra STANAGs and some rifle grenades. He checks in with the supply sergeant, "Morning Sarge. Any chance you can send a couple of crates of spare rifles and ammo with us? Best chance we have to help he civvies survive. Beyond our interference that is."
