Hanney was born on Terra to a family where the sons either went on to join the military or the Kirk. Hanney was trained first in artillery, and then in the effective use of missiles when it was discovered he could pilot a mech. He was assigned to Sandhurst solely on location, and there studied under some of the greatest mech pilots, learning to destroy his target while sitting far away from the field of combat.
His career was unremarkable, as he spent most of his early career hunting pirates. Long periods of separation during this time led him to become more devote in his faith, and this led him to request a leave of absence in 2761 to attend seminary. With little conflict ongoing, his request was granted. He graduated in Dec of 2766 with a renewed commitment to be a military chaplain. His installation ceremony was on Dec 23, 2765.
He was returned to active combat status less than 1 month later.
