Title: SPRINGFIELD Mission 5 - 3/22/63
Post by: Ice on November 20, 2025, 03:49:36 PM
Ranger units were able to capture the port in the last AO. Destruction of the adjacent mine access buildings was a necessary goal to buy time. Adding in the artillery units and heavier forces destruction was a welcome bonus. The mine access buildings would be collapsed covering both entrance and the access tunnel with debris. With the access tunnel itself filled and surrounding entrance debris it likely would take many months for all to be cleared. Trapped mech forces wouldn't be able to vacate short of the pilots and support personnel via smaller exits. The port and cache were handed over to the areas only security forces and given a prayer of good luck. This would clearly buy Ranger's time to exfil the area and hopefully get whatever civilians or officials who still remained in Ranger hands out of dodge. With the stiff resistance at the port and several front-line units seen there was a heavy assumption that there would be more in the area who would be looking for heads to roll if they managed to muster and attack the port again. Considering the front-line omnis and artillery assets that were at the port this was no small blow the 6th force. Rangers looking outward made short work of recovery and data gathering then fled the area. Expecting further contact they prepared.

The expected contact never arrived for the Rangers and after an extended time made it to the coast finally.

3/18/63

Security forces would report being chased off location of the port by heavy forces of the 17th. This would be under duress but without weapons fire. They have regrouped at the coast and begun establishing a logistical and medical hub.

3/22/63

Security forces would occupy the coastal town not far from a regional multi use port. Additional communications have been sporadic between the 17th and Rangers following the issues at the port, but word has come that the 4th Davion Guard are here. This may finally almost be over or so we thought. Security forces in the early morning patrolled the west of town and reported a vessel. Pushing further out revealed 6th forces dropping off of what appeared to be a Rapier Class Patrol Destroyer. Additional forces blindsided them with their last communication reporting assault class battlemech's. This would be followed up not long after by what appeared to be multiple pairs of Arrow IV missiles smashing into the western roadway retaining wall. The small riverbed in the west quickly flooded with water and swept debris. Rangers were ordered to help set up pontoon bridges and push out to investigate under protest.

Ranger forces hurriedly came back reporting incoming forces of which the Destroyer officially has started heading in the town's direction. After some time, Ranger forces have cleared most civilians and begun defensive posturing. Additional contacts of which are likely 6th forces have now also been reported in the East and those appear to be a Star of clan omnis with vehicle support. The final straw appeared to be reports of landing crafts closing from the south. We have been pinched in, and officials have now ordered us to fulfill our contract and defend this town as they have nowhere else to go or the time. They insisted that we can't simply abandon the local armory as its contents must not be obtained by Loki. Both 17th and 4th units are inbound, but Rangers have to buy enough time and mitigate damage. We can only assume our position, the local armory, and logistical hub have been either reported by their scouts or some other means. The town now has begun taking Arrow IV indiscriminately. I would expect to see anything less at this point from 6th forces.

Sheets printed as well. Will give to Jazz when he gets here.

I will have to make 5 custom naval sheets for the LC and destroyer.

Someone please bring a tac ops book for easy reference. I will try to get pages from pdf printed and page numbers.

Naval stuff is kind of complex and there are stuff that will have to be discussed as it happens.

If people have questions ahead of time I or likely Seth can answer some of them.

Update

So their are oddities with the battlemech landing craft.

Apparently these are 1x3 which makes some sense but not at the same time considering physical mini presence on the unit. I am modifying these to the 2x2 with 2 high exterior walls and 1 level front ramp per the write up.

The sheet I have also had its armor values modified to fit more so with the construction rules. This is 10 or so points less per side and 20 from the font. I have balanced the armor toi be more in line and they are still fairly tough.

Looking at the current weather, I will come down to play, but may have to leave early because the projections looks like the snow will be starting sooner than they were expecting. If I leave early I will leave my mechs and sheets for someone to play to finish the game.

Springfield
After Action Report
Captain Anders Wolfram-Kelswa Commanding

AAR
Ranger forces were deployed for a beach assault with Ehreschuld anchoring west against the closing ground forces, Blitzkrieg in the SW, Fire in the SE and then Pilum in W suburbs and Jazz in E suburbs and out to the east of it.  Landing craft obliqued, shifting east for a concentrated though delayed landing.  Initial fire saw the western forces' Thunderbolt savaged and minor damage to one of the landing craft.  The landing craft hit the beaches as the destroyer entered the OZ.  Both Lightnings made strafing runs on it and were shot down before being able to line up for shots demonstrating just how dangerous the craft was.  The destroyer focused primarily on leveling buildings throughout the rest of the short engagement though dished out enough damage to mech forces to definitely make its presence felt.  Good maneuvering by the Assault lance attacking Ehreschuld allowed the Charger to put a foot through it's rear torso, damaging the engine.  Focused fire from Fire and Blitzkrieg lances dropped one and two hovercraft respectively taking out nearly a lance in one pass.  As the 6th pushed in from the beaches, careful strafing immobilized the remaining vehicle.  Jazz's fire crippled the Trebuchet, but hardly a fair trade as Blitzkrieg's  Nova Cat was crippled, a GR blowing and the pilot falling unconscious as they found themselves as the only viable targets for multiple opponents.  Ehreschuld's Cauldron-Born sporting 5 SRM-6s dropped the Thunderbolt, triggering an ammo explosion, destroying the engine and the pilot died in the fall.  As the battle's focus shifted eastward with units getting into close quarters Ehreschuld's Banshee damaged the gyro of both the Charger and the Penetrator and blew off the right torso of the Penetrator after having cleanly blown off the left arm.  The Lyran pilot in it's panic would jump on a building attempting to go prone to hide, though apparently had undetected engine damaged as the mech went up in a mushroom cloud making the attempt.   Jazz's Berserker hit the Loki dropping it while others in the lance felled the Trebuchet.  Fire lance dropped the Catapult, though the danager and damage was far from over.

Withering fire from Ehreschuld's Cauldron-Born took more of a toll on the assault lance blowing the head off the MadCat Mk II, though the MadCat took out Ehreschuld's Marauder's engine in exchange.  Reckless fire from the Lyran Black Knight who had taped down the triggers resulted in the 'Mech shutting down due to heat problems.  Pilum's forces killed the Charger before it could complete its charge of Ehreschuld's Marauder while Jazz Actual reminded the Rangers of his natural touch, running his mech backwards uphill into woods to tactically relocate.  Blitzkrieg's Nova Cat pilot had awakened and fought back, but ultimately shut down the 'Mech after having been breached in every location.  Focus fire from Pilum drops the Cyclops while Fire's lance took out one of the reinforcement Strikers.

Reinforcements from both side colided in the northeast of the OZ as Fire's Viper got swarmed.  A successful strafe and heavy bombing damaged the surrounding OpFor units and allowed the Viper to kill the attacking Shadow Cat.  Ehreschuld having secured the western front with Pilum's help shifted attention to fire on the destroyer, breaching the armor at least once, though not the point where it started flooding.  Jazz's forces crippled the Rakshasa and badly damaged the Black Knight.  Pilum destroyed the Wolverine's engine, gyro and CT.  The most tragic loss happened moments later when the Lyran's Atlas blew the head off Fire's Spartan killing SGT Achilles Butterworth in the process.  Blitzkrieg's Highlander tried a burial to even the score and though destroying most of the head, failed to kill the pilot in the process.

Fire from the Ranger's two Long Tom artillery landed throwing up a wide screen across the front of the suburbs preventing clear sight from the destroyer who decided to disengage.  As the brief and brutal battle reached its conclusion the Atlas landed it's final blow and Blitzkrieg's Highlander dropped, it's right torso destroyed.  Jazz' Berserker took off the head of the Black Knight, which went up in a massive fireball and radioactive cloud after collapsing raising questions of whether the 6th's 'Mechs not just their pilots were rigged with dead man's switches.  With the final salvo Jazz's MadCat destroyed the Rakshasa, Fire's lance cored the Crusader as well as destroying botht he Harasser and Raven.

It should be noted that at some point one of Blitzkrieg's pilots picked up the 6th's Victor pilot.  It was then that the dead man's switches were confirmed when the pilot detonated their vest.  The pilot sustained moderate, but not life threatening injuries.

Ranger units would bend and not break. They would pay a price of flesh and metal this day. The beachhead assault would be repelled and destroyer vacating the shoreline. There would be problematic units remaining but facing the incoming forces meant assured destruction. They opted to flee the field with a few breaking through the lines in the East. They would destroy a few more buildings out of spite and flee north. Those units would be hit with overwhelming ASF sorties by the 17th and either destroyed or abandoned. Their pilots going to ground to be captured or killed later. Other units would flee east in a fighting retreat and fade into the hills toward the coast. They would be recovered by the landing crafts they came in on and surrender later.

Liason forces would reveal this location had to be protected at all costs not just for our dropships or the port. A small chemical weapons storage that if found would be a large weight added to the scale in favor of 6th forces. Ranger forces were under the microscope with an assumed leaky ship. Limited information was passed onward of which was isolated to the unit CO and unit XO finished the list. As the information remained hidden and with no intent to bypass further to the facility Ranger command has been cleared.

Clear disregard for civilian structure and infrastructure duely noted. Landing forces digging in signified intent to hold the beach for further forces not far from the horizon but too late. Pushing forward would likely have resulted in the same result or better but instead momentum was lost. The larger swinging door force in the East was on the cusp of breaking the line entirely. It was unable to complete it in time due to forces delaying landing and arrival in all zones. The bridge head was isolated and broken. Limited fighting power on the beach remained and supporting destroyer withdrew.

The 4th Davion would land additional forces in the area to secure the storage facility further north. The word came shortly after that the 6th Lyran had surrendered finally. Months of fighting coming to close after mutiny and revolt. Ranger command would release an internal full disclosure statement to its forces following removal of the weapons regarding it all. The surrender of 6th forces, additional events of note. The Diamond Shark name redacted on all accounts as agreed of course for their part. Information would be passed on detailing the mutiny and its cost. Tribunal is expected for the war crimes of which many are noted firsthand by Rangers but also the internal executions of over 20 6th Lyran personnel which led to the mutiny.
