Painting to match old Rangers minis
« on: August 27, 2022, 08:09:04 PM »

This was asked in a PM, and I felt it might be useful for everyone.  If you want to paint to match your old minis, here's the color palatte I was using and the order of operations.

Prime Grey.

Blue:
Basecoat Vallejo Model Color Dark Blue (70.930)
Wash with Citadel Drakenhof Nightshade
Recoat with Dark Blue.
First highlight Vallejo Model Color Andrea Blue (70.841)
Second highlight Vallejo Model Color Sky Blue (70.961)
Corner highlight Vallejo Model Color Off-white (70.820)
Final Highlight pure white (your choice of paint)

Bone Color:
Basecoat with Reaper Master Series Aged Bone
Wash with Citadel Argrax Earthshade
Recoat with Aged Bone
First highlight with Reaper Master Series Polished Bone
Corner highlight Vallejo Model Color Off-white (70.820)
Final Highlight pure white (your choice of paint)

Silver Metallic Components:
Basecoat with Vallejo Mecha Color Steel (69.063)
Wash with Citadel Nuln Oil
Drybrush with Vallejo Mecha Color Steel (69.063)
Highlight with Vallejo Mecha Color Light Steel (69.064)

Searchlights:
Basecoat with Reaper Master Series Sun Yellow (9008)
Wash just the upper right corner with Citadel Argrax Earthshade
Lower left corner gets a thick L-shaped swipe of Reaper Master Series Lemon Yellow
Using White (your choice) put one large and one small white dot in the upper right (dark) section
Using white (your choice) draw a thin L-shaped line

Cockpits:
Basecoat with Red (I used IWM Red 77-718, but you can't so try Vallejo Mecha Color Red 69.008)
Upper right corner gets a shade of Black (your choice)
In the corner opposite the black draw a thin L-shaped line of White (your choice)
Over the black, draw 2-3 thin lines of White moving from over the black towards the L-shaped line of white.

**Decals are applied after all painting is complete.**

**After mini is complete and any basing is finished**
Entire mini is covered with 2 layers of rattle can Matte Varnish
Cockpit windows and searchlights are painted in 2 layers of DecoArt Triple Thick Gloss Glaze
