The windswept shore of a frozen lake

The roar of a low-flying areospace fighter shatters the morning silence.  It looks as though your movement toward the Edmonton-zone garrison has been detected; by mistake or just dumb bad luck, you may never know.  Major Stastny's voice fills the comm net.  "Everyone up and to your posts!  inbound, 5 minutes tops!  We've got to make sure the support units make it out!  Captain, form a battle line at your discretion; they're advancing on us from the west, which means we'll have to go around the lake to break contact.  Everyone else, move!"

(Scenario: cover the escape of your vehicles, and break contact yourselves.  All PC mechs will start the scenario online.  NPC mechs or other units will need a 10+ roll to be online on Turn 1, with the TN dropping by 1 every turn after that.  All combat units will start on-board.  You need to prevent the OPFOR from crossing the play surface for 15 turns.  If you send the non-combat units across the frozen lake bed, this drops to 10 turns...but each non-combat unit must roll 2d6, on a 2, 3, or 4 they have broken through the ice and are lost.  Once the time limit is reached, You need to get off-board.  You may leave the board as long as no enemy Mechs are within 8 hexes of you, and may fall back off of any board edge but the one via which the enemy entered the game.  Due to scouting efforts from Joanna and Marshall, the enemy surprise is not complete, and your PC Mechs will start the game fully active.  Areospace is in play during this scenario.

Abstraction: Any enemy Mech that manages to get across the playing surface will choose a single non-combat unit to attack.  On as 2d6 result of 7 that unit is destroyed.  On any other result, the unit will require1d6x5 WP worth of repairs.  Any enemy vehicle that does so will handle things in the same manner, but will require a 2 or 12 to destroy the target vehicle instead of a 7.  Note that, as vehicles are carrying supplies, vehicles lost may impact your available WP total in future scenarios.

Side note: Phil, I have your PC sheet and Mech.)

31 Dec. 2766
2200 Hours
Somewhat more Eastern

{Scene opens up with a narrow shot showing SRG Xin sitting on the foot of his Chameleon, smoking a cigarette.  The shot pans out, and it is revealed that the Chameleon and a Griffin are attached by thick cables to what appears to be a severely damaged Schrek PPC Carrier, bathed in a dim moonlight.  Further back, more mechs with cables attached to them.  Xin gets off his mech and walks to the right.}

"Banzi, do you have the projections on how long it will take to strip this Schrek and the Lancelot for spare parts?  I do not want these slowing us down for longer than it needs to be, but we need every single part we can get."

"Has anyone seen Marshall?  He said he had a special project in mind for the broken Blackjack, but I don't want our location given away by it."

"Finally, has anyone seen the Captain?  I know our plan is to go east, but what after that.  Do we need to be pumping the prisoners for access codes so someone can hack the computer systems and authorize us out on a dropship?  Figure out the transport schedule of the dropships so we can steal one already authorized.  Whats the long term plan here?"

Marshall walks up to the foot of the Chameleon covered in soot and grease.  He looks at Xin, then at the Chameleon "You know smoking will kill you right?  Then again that 'Mech of yours will do it faster."  Marshall pulls out a rag and wipes the grease from his face, "That Blackjack's had it.  It's a fusion plant and some myomer right now.  I took a look and I can probably trap it, best way will be to lay it down as if it face planted and to rig the cockpit to blow.  I can put a shaped charge on the fusion plant which might get it to cook if I get lucky.  Pressure vessels just don't explode that impressively.  Best way to lure our opposition in will be to leave a warm body inside the cockpit as if it contains one of us unconscious.  I vote for that badly wounded Jackrabbit pilot, we can gag him with some re-entry tape and bind him with wire ties.  Break the controls to be sure he can't stand the 'Mech up."

Marshall reaches down to his belt and takes a swig from his canteen, "What I'm thinking is that Johnny Rim World comes along our path and sees a downed Blackjack in SLDF livery.  He scans it and sees a good fusion plant and a live pilot, he cracks the cockpit and..." Marshall makes a fist and then explodes it outward, "Boom.  If we get lucky there's a catastrophic steam explosion that takes out a company.  Other option is to rig a MAD sensor up and let that detonate the rig when a mass of ferrous metal comes within a certain range, I'd set it at 30 or 40 tons.  Not an electronics guy.  More confined the area we leave it in, the better."

Captain Freund worked quietly on his Griffin's SRM ammo bay, the one with the faulty loading mechanism.  He knew he didn't have the skills to resolve the issue, but the mindless maintenance provided the solitude he needed after a battle.  Listening quietly to the SRG's conversation, he lowered himself out of the Griffin's torso.

In the darkness Marshall didn't notice him approach.  "Sergeant Marshall."  He looks to Franklin and nods, "Sergeant."

Marshall gave him a blank look, fatigue evident in his demeanor, with the same small hint of insubordination he was seeing throughout the unit.  Morale is low and getting worse, he thought.  We weren't even supposed to be here, we should still be in the Taurian Concordat doing what we do best.  Betrayals are taking their toll.  Betrayed by allies, betrayed by a whole planet.  The whole man-against-the-universe feeling breaks a person down fast.  I hope Stastny's got a plan.  Any plan.

"To answer your question Franklin, orders are coming from Major Stastny.  I'm sure he'll fill us in when he needs us to shoot something."

Gerald stared hard at SGT Marshall.  Nothing causes bad morale to snowball like bad discipline.

"Sergeant Marshall have you received any updated orders from SLDF command?"  The sergeant looked confused.  Gerald kept his voice low, "Have you received any recent orders indicating that using prisoners of war as human bombs is now part of our standard operating procedures?"

The question hung in the air.  SGT Marshall seemed very interested in something related to his combat boots.  Gerald continued, making sure that the few who might've stopped to eavesdrop couldn't hear.  Even Xin was having a hard time catching every word.  "Sarge, seems to me you could get the heartbeat you need in that cockpit from any one of a number of local animals, and it so happens I've got an expert hunter standing in front of me.  So go do what you do best, find a raccoon or deer or whatever, and then rig up as big an explosion as you can get out of that Blackjack.  Dismissed."

SGT Marshall left in a hurry, and it looked like Franklin was quickly finding other things to work on as well.  Gerald stomped off to find the major.  These men need to know that we've got a plan, that we've got a goal, and we've got hope.  Chain of command be damned, it was time Stastny made with some details.  At this point, even a bad plan was preferable to none at all.

<Note posted near food station>

Please list any enemy forces below on this sheet that have at least a 43 KPH crusing speed (OOC: 4/6) so that we know what may be pursuing us.  For example, the demolisher are only capable of 33 KPH cruising, and so I am not interested in them.

Mongoose
Grasshopper (although I understand that it was having some maneuvering problems towards the end of the fight, can anyone confirm?)

Sarge, the best I can do is get the ppc's off the schrek and cut the 2 arms off the lancelot for the large lasers in a couple of hours.  There is so much stuff packed around both engines that I need a maint bay to get anything else.  You don't have a spare bay around anywhere do ya?

Hey Xin, do me a favor and go get Hawker and the Capt.  I need to talk to them about something.

Do what you can there Banzai,  but I'm a little more interested in getting some sheets of armor off than the weapons.  I will let the Capt and Major know if I see them, or more likely send one of the corporals on the message running errand.

Grasshopper was operational full speed and full weapons although one with a severe weapon malfunction, also the catapult was still operational and in near perfect condition although low on lrm ammo. Also there was a warhammer which as far as I remember took no damage.

Sorry Captain. The Rim World commander isn't a nice person to say the least. A swift death by explosion is way better than what Babcock would do to someone who let themselves be captured. I'll do it your way.
