Nicholas Kerensky speaks to his gathered warriors.
“My friends, you are my chosen.  The best of the best.  Long has been your training and trials and you 800 are what has been forged.  All that is left is one more set of trials.  These “Trials of Position” will determine those worthy of command in my Clans.  Each of you will face three opponents.  Defeat one, and your place as a warrior in the Clans is assured.  Defeat two, and you will earn the rank of Star Commander to command a star of your peers.  Defeat all three, and you will claim the title of Star Captain, and command a Binary or Trinary of your fellow warriors.  Let the Trials begin………”


Rules:
Each character will face 3 opponents.  One will be equal in battle value [BV2] to the character and his ride.  One will have a bv approximately 25% less and the third will have a bv about 25% more than the character.  If the character chooses to engage them one at a time then the opponents will abide by that.  If multiple targets are chosen by the character, then the opponents can all engage simultaneously.  The normal order of the trial will have the character facing the lowest bv opponent first, equal bv second and highest, third.  If the character wishes to change up this order it is his [or her] choice and risk.  There will be no resting, reloading, or repairing between opponents.  Two warriors will have their trials at the same time.  The warriors will fight on four maps [2x2] and start on the opposite long sides.  One map chosen by each character and one chosen by each person running the opponents.  Character’s home edge will be on the map chosen by the opponent.  If at any time one trial warrior engages one of his fellow trial warrior's opponents, then a grand melee will ensue and all of the opponents may fire upon either trial warrior.

The final command rankings for the characters will be determined by the percentage of bv killed to break inevitable ties.

Remember that this is a live fire exercise.  Death can happen suddenly.

In addition to command responsibilities, the Star Captain and Star Commanders will be allowed to customize their rides.  Details on that will follow.

Dimitri Kharlan was still amazed that he stood among the chosen.  Many were veterans of the Amaris Civil War.  Among them were living legends like Admiral McKenna, General Truscott, Major Hazen and the remnants of the 741st's Echo Company.  Grandfather had served under McKenna at one point and had only the best to say of the Admiral.  It would have been a great honor to have served under Admiral - Khan McKenna.  He shook his head slightly in self-admonishment. 'It is a great honor to have been selected at all.'  As one of the top graduates from the academy he had been permitted to select his 'Mech.  The Pillager he selected suited the image he wanted to portray - tough, intimidating, relentless.  Not something others would see just by looking at him.  Bookish.  Unassuming.  Awkward.  Those were more the terms classmates used.  They tried to get under his skin, but failed.  He accepted his shortcomings.  He would grow into his frame soon.  If others wished to evaluate him based on his appearance, so be it.  They would soon learn that Dimitri let his actions speak for him.

Jaroslav Gurdel pulls the Spector, that was assigned to him; into the mech bay. It has been shot to hell and brought him through the gruelling Trials. One shot and he could have been meeting his maker. He is getting to feel quite comfortable in this new mech. It is not what he has been used to, but it will do. Now to get the techs to get her back into fighting shape. Seyla!

   After alexander died things seemed out of place and then in a flash went out of hand. This is not what we left what remained of our lives and homes for so long ago. This new idea, this ideal his son has now just seems off. Who can say what he has on his agenda. At this time however I may no longer have a choice. My family can not stay here and be the victims in another pointless war. We will see what happens and if this is the right thing to do. My son graduated from the academy and made me proud. If only it were the times back home.

    We have left the new homes we fought so hard for. We have made it to a new system and are going to begin a new again. My oldest son and I have been chosen to join a so called clan. It is a new ideal and way of life so who knows what will become of this. Maybe this is the needed step after all. We both start our trial of position. Supposed to be honorable combat one on one. Seems like something like a duel in the solaris arenas. Apparently we all have three opponents to face and just defeating one gets you into the clan. Taking more than that down grants you a higher rank. Who knows maybe this old guy can make it past master sergeant after all and show these younger guys what it means to be echo company.

   Our trials are over, we made it. James managed to only take out one mech and almost got a second. Still nothing can compare to experience for combat. Simulations are nothing to combat. That showed in his fight. Still have much to teach him I do. Maybe I will give him the combat footage from my trial. Some of the other echo guys have cleared theirs as well. Sure showed the younger guys after all!

The trials are complete.  The members of the Clans and their ranks are decided.  It was a grueling series of exercises that surprisingly resulted in no deaths among the chosen.

Clan Wolverine gained an unusual mix of some of the youngest and oldest members of all of the Clans.  Binary 4 is commanded by youngster Star Captain Jaroslav Gurdel.  His second [one of the oldest] is Star Commander Kenji Yamamori [SLDF veteran and former member of the famed Echo Company].  The rest of Binary 4 includes the youngest clan warrior Dmitri Kharlan, James Moon and his grandfather Allan Moon [also of Echo Co.] and lastly, the elderly Rowan Hawker [also of Echo Co].

Star Commander Yamamori reviewed the profiles and 'Mech assignments yet again, looking for any detail or insight he had missed.  It was an old scout's habit.  He considered his daughter and smiled.  She had done very well in her trial, earning the rank of Star Captain.  He would have to salute her when he saw her.  He once again regarded the information in front of him.  Their binary was an interesting mix of old and young.  Probably the most unusual binary in the Clan if not the Clans as a whole.  To his mind though, there was a clear choice for the two stars.

His CO was aggressive, and others shared that explosiveness for action - Kabrinsky, Moon, Kumar, Charikov.  Others such as himself were more patient, deliberate - Moon, Hawker, Matsunaka, Kharlan.  Those groupings were strong in other ways.  The Star Captain would end up with a full striker Star.  Movement profiles were consistent and the unit brought a lot of firepower to bear.  Mechwarrior Kabrinsky would serve as the eyes of the Star.

In Echo Star as he thought of it, Matsunaka served a similar role to Kabrinsky.  His own Star also brought a lot of firepower to bear, though with a more eclectic movement profile.  While slower the Osprey and Pillager packed a significant long range punch.  He had fought so long with Moon and Hawker that it felt right to serve closely with him.  Kharlan could provide tactical insights, and he'd be a fool not to take them.  The kid was young but talented.

This was a fine challenge.  One that would help him stay young.  He was sure there were other strong mixes of their personnel.  He would be curious to hear if Star Captain Gurdel would share his vision or at least consider his recommendation.

Yamamori rose and sought out his CO.

"Star Captain Gurdel.  Do you have a moment, sir?  I wanted to talk to you about the disposition of our troops and share my thoughts on the matter."

Star Captain Yamamori, I see that you have been busy while the trials have been taking place. The recommendations that you have made look to be very sound decisions. The only one that I might question would be the placement of Matsunaka. I feel that his speed and the active probe might best be ustilized in my star.
Considering your great experience, I feel that we will use, at this time; your roster for the Binary.

We will be called the 1st Wolverine Strikers. I will leave the naming of your star to you, sir. My star will be called "Death's Grip".

Yamamori nods.  "Sir, I had not considered the probe.  With that in mind, I agree that Matsunaka should join Death's Grip.  Who do you recommend as the replacement?"  He considers the names that the Star Captain has mentioned.  "Sir, my star will be called Righteous Fury."

Star Commander Yamamori, with placing Mechwarrior Matsunaka in Death's Grip, I will move Mechwarrior Kumar to Righteous Fury.

Star Commander Yamamori nods.  "Kumar, will be a nice addition.  Thank you."
