Custom built terrain counters
« on: December 30, 2017, 01:34:34 AM »

Does anyone here have the capacity to laser cut (or equivalent) hexes out of thin MDF or something?  What I want to do is to take these counters:

http://camoforrequest.blogspot.com/2015/09/first-maps-finally-done.html?m=1

Print them in hi-res, and glue them to the top of the cut MDF shapes.  That shouldn't be THAT hard, and we get an effectively unlimited supply or *really* nice-looking building counters.  Every time we get an Urban scenario, I get more and more angry with the HexPacks, because there just aren't enough BUILDINGS in the damn hexpack.

Thoughts?  Opinions?  Thrown pottery and/or $20 bills?

Are those images what you're looking for or do you want individual hexes?

Doesn't the library have a maker studio where you can rent time on a laser cutter?

It's booked through April.

Cutting shapes appropriate to those images.  So there's some single-hexes that need to be cut, there's some 7-hex circles that need to be cut, there's some 3-hex long strips that need to be cut, and so forth.

Well, I do have a 3d printer...
I can probably throw something together as a test before the Jan 13th game. But my printer is mostly booked through the end of January for some stuff for my parents 45th anniversary.

Wouldn't it be as easy, and possibly as cheap, to simply order plastic hex bases and glue the image cutouts to them? Litko, Chessex, Gale Force 9, etc. Where you want a permanent row of 3 hexes, or more, glue them all to a plasti-card template maybe?

It sounds like you'd want flat hex bases, but I think you'd be able to buy those just as easily as the recessed ones.

They would need to be removable or cubical in order for mechs to occupy the hex.

So, it could be an office building then...
