What's on the work bench?
« on: December 13, 2010, 07:01:07 PM »

Just wondering what everyone was painting on?  I'm trying to get back at it; I have 3 that I am trying my first Lyran Guards scheme on.

Well I'm currently busy procrastinating with regards to my painting, but I really should be working on finishing up some Lyran Guard and Marik Militia stuff.

Good to hear that are at least some industrious painters around here.  I also have some Drac hovers & a Jenner that I never finished so I need to get on the stick.

We've been making some Christmas candies for gifts so the kitchen & my impromptu painting table has been covered up with that project.  But I did get my airbrush back out & used it to prime the minis.  I kinda lost my airbrush-mojo so I have to get over the re-learning curve again.  A friend of mine was kind enough to make me an airbrush holder so I'm not dropping the thing all the time so that will help.  That is, if the kitten we are caring for will quit trying to chew on my nice new air hose.    I did buy a really sweet compressor early in the year but that was only the second time I have used it.  It's so quiet, I can use it upstairs and my wife can watch TV in the other room.  I'm still learning the best way to seal up all the connections in order to reduce pressure loss; most of that is small amounts that get out around the head.  I'm trying some beeswax and that's helping but I haven't gotten the knack yet.  I'm lusting over a set of paint strainer funnels in the MicroMark catalog.  I'd like to get those and maybe some of the clear decal paper so I can take a crack at making a few custom decals.

Where to, Dan?

I've always been interested in airbrushes, just never been around one.

I have an airbrush and never use it. To much trouble to get it out and prime. I just use the cheap grey primer from Wal-Mart. The minis are to small for me to use, except for priming.

I like to use spray primer too but I don't like to use it inside the house and it was cold enough outside that I didn't think spray prime would work so well. I have some Vallejo acrylic primer that works pretty well. I mainly us it for base coats as I do like the smooth layers it can put down. I used to paint without primer and I really didn't have any problem with the paint adhering. Dullcoat is a wonderful thing!  But I also like to use various masks and templates to paint various camo and decorative stuff. I really started using one years ago as I was into aircraft models. I have picked up a few kits to use in tabletop gaming at Gencon so I hope to start on those something.

I've been somewhat slowed down by the freezing weather and my unwillingness to spray primer indoors.  My intentions are to finish up my Com Guard forces for the campaign (haven't been in a huge rush since most of mine didn't make it off the dropship during the 1st scenario and therefore haven't been available yet) but of course I can't state what those mechs are due to operational security concerns.  :)

I've also got a new 10M Thunderbolt that I plan to paint up for the 1st Regulan Hussars.  Those are at the top of my list, but I've got far too many stashed away that need to get paint on them.  I need to just start painting constantly and avoid getting bogged down in trying to make something better than my skills will allow.

Speaking of which, anytime Phil or Rob want to do some painting lessons before/after a game, just let me know.
