Re-opening
« on: June 29, 2020, 12:59:44 PM »

OK, so it's looking like people are wanting games to resume, soon-ish.

Here's the thing.  We cannot play in someone's house. Enough people have contacted me otherwise, and therefore we will *not* be playing in a personal dwelling for the foreseeable future.

As such, we need a place to host games.  I was planning on scheduling game dates with Time Warp Games, but I just got off the phone with them, and they have re-closed their play space and do not plan on it to re-open during the summer months, at least.  I am therefore asking people to look around and do some research and see if there's a place available for game dates.  The requirements:
1) It must be sufficiently large enough that, with 10 players, each person can reasonably back away from the table and have ~3 feet of space around them.  The Mason library is a good guideline for the smallest space.
2) It must allow food & drink.
3) Food, drink, chairs, and restrooms must be easily accessible.
4) It must actually be open.
5) It needs to be within or immediately outside the 275 beltway, in Ohio.  It is unreasonable to expect our Dayton people to drive to 3 Brothers Games in Hebron, and likewise it is unreasonable to expect me to drive to Dayton.

Note that I am NOT requiring the space to be "free".  If we have to start bringing some money to pay for play space, then that is another inconvenience of Covid.  With that said, a space rental fee of more than $200 (which is roughly $20/person for our usual attendance) is too high.

I would like to resume games on either the 25th of July, or the 11th of August, so ask regarding reservations on those dates.  I will be out of town on August 1st dealing with my late father-in-law's estate, and sooner than the 25th is going to be too quick, I think.

Go.

Awesome; personally, I've seriously missed these games.

That being said, I fall into a higher risk category (about to turn 50 and obese with high blood pressure). Sure, I've dropped almost 40 pounds since January, but by no means is that anywhere close to being enough. My wife had childhood asthma, and this also puts her into the higher risk category. I share these personal details, because I want to stress that it's only for these reasons that I would have to bow out from any games at this time. COVID-19 has the potential to completely wreck my family, and spending all day in the presence of others (essentially casting a WIDE net across OH/NKY) even with social distancing, isn't a risk I'm willing to take.

Please know that I don't judge the decisions others make in this regard, at all! I know you will all work to stay as safe as possible, and I truly wish you to have a fantastic time and stay healthy. If there's some way to Zoom me in, I'll even stop in virtually and watch the game.

Until the threat of the virus has died down to practically nil, or there's an actual cure, or a vaccine, I'll be out. If that means putting my force on leave or something from the unit as well, perfectly understandable, I'll comply with whatever leaves the unit in the best shape going forward.

You guys are awesome, and I mean it. I can't wait to get back to playing BT. I miss Rob's storytelling, and I miss getting to experience those unique stories with the rest of you. Hopefully, I can rejoin you soon!

Rob, I'm in favor of returning to game when it's reasonably safe to do so.  I fully support the criteria you've proposed.  I did a quick look at Yottaquest and they're still closed for events.  Looking at the public library, as of June 22nd, even those locations that do allow for in-person services limit stays to 1 hour.  We could potentially look at the food court area of Tri-County Mall if people think that might be feasible.

The Sharonville Community Center rents meeting rooms (max 50) for $80 to residents for 4 hours.  I'm not sure if that's available at the moment or if we'd pay the full double cost of $160 for 8 hours or not.  I can look into that.

I cut my initial message short as I got distracted.  Byran, I am glad you are well, though sorry to hear you won't be able to join us anytime soon.  Here's hoping for a swift vaccine to keep us all safe.  You will certainly be missed.

Using "someone" in that context feels like I am being singled out (Gives me the big sad.)
Anyway I did get my PDF copy of Destiny in today (after having to sign in through crowdox since CGL is messed up.) For those who want to try it, of course.

Paul, I read that to mean that we wouldn't be gaming in that close of an enclosed space likely because people weren't comfortable with it.  If it was just that you weren't willing to host that would leave Dan as an option or someone else.  I wouldn't take it personally.  With everything going on, people's situations and current trends, finding a larger non-personal venue with sufficient space makes sense.

Sorry, I should have said "anyone's" house.

To clarify, Dan has explicitly said that his house is off limits, and I have had multiple people say that your house is too tightly confined to be an acceptable space.  I know of nobody with a house large enough to satisfy the space requirements save my parents' house (they added a literal ballroom so they could practice 1880s vintage dancing), and I already checked on that space, so...

I apologize. I didn't mean to make you feel singled out.

You called me before about it. It was a joke since you used a singular and not a plural. It does not bother me. I understand the situation.
That still does not negate that I got MW Destiny for those who want to try it out. I will have to fwd the PDF to someone else (I am not good at the roleplaying aspect of it all)

Also, I apologize for it as well, I should have shown it was sarcasm to start.

Ok, I followed up on the Sharonville Rec Center.  They are not currently renting the rooms.  They are starting to rent out the picnic shelters.  Shelter rentals are $25 for residents.  There's no timetable on it, so I'm guessing we can get it for the day.  I can call tomorrow and get more details.  There are bathrooms there and having food there won't be a problem.  While the picnic tables aren't great for the maps, a couple of portable folding tables could handle it with weights used to hold them down.  People would want to bring clipboards for the record sheets, but even if it's raining, for 8 to 10 of us to play in the middle of the shelter and it shouldn't be a problem.

Thoughts?

Given the lack of commentary here, I'm going to hold off on pursuing anything further.  I think the shelter's the most promising option, but I'm not going to operate in a vacuum.

I'm in a lot of the same boat as Serrate - for various health reasons I'm hunkering down for the foreseeable future.

I'm expecting another shelter in place order to be issued shortly for the region, honestly.  With Butler and Hamilton being technically Level 4 qualified, Clermont not looking much better, and Montgomery now at L3...this isn't looking good.  I only know of one store thats currently hosting people up near the base, and before much longer I think that'll be shutting down as well.

A plurality of the group has said - either publicly or privately - that they are unwilling to return until, essentially, a vaccine is available and practical, and the pandemic has passed.

Therefore we will not be re-opening at this time.  Additionally, based on those requirements, I would not expect us to resume in 2020, and potentially not during 2021.

I am also assuming we will end up with a 2nd order but I'm still looking. As far as finding an alternative I'm just not seeing one currently. I do have a lead on a hotel meeting room possibly but I was trying to go through my uncle's gf who works there but she said to go to the manager with it because of what's needed. That kind of drops the hope of getting it cheap I feel but might still be worth a shot.

Rob, thanks for the clarity.  It's completely understandable.  Is there any interest in doing something online - BT or otherwise as a way to get together as a group for the foreseeable future?
