So, quick update on the past week:
Saturday, the 4th: at 6:30 pm the fire alarms go off in my building, and we hear a horrible noise from the back of the apartment. Turns out the noise was a sprinkler head going off in our furnace closet. The fire department shut it down about 20-25 minutes later, after it dumped somewhere around 2000 gallons of water on us. Carpet cleaners come at 11:00 pm and leave two hours later, having extracted what they could and putting 2 blowers under the carpet, BUT NO DEHUMIDIFIERS!!!
Sunday: maintenance brings another blower, but still no dehumidifier. Place is super noisy, but at least we get our heat turned back on after they inspect the unit.
Monday: Maintenance finally brings a dehumidifier. At this point, walls are slick with moisture, clothes hanging in closets are wet, couch feels wet and clammy, moisture on tv screens. Today, the apartment complex finally offers to let us use the guest apartment, but only for a couple days ecause someone else needs it on Thursday.
Tuesday: Pictures on walls start falling off as the cardboard backings are too wet to support weight; mold growing in all windows (which have all been completely covered in water since Sunday).
Wednesday: At 10:30 am I start experience severe pain in my back, call wife to come get me at work. Pain intensifies, spreads to groin, it's a kidney stone. Trip to hospital, out a few hours later. Told to get lots of rest, let's see how that works out. On my way home, did some research and found out that kidney stones are frequently brought on by high-humidity environments and the accompanying dehydration that can occur. I go straight to apt office and demand new apt. They agree, but say we'd have to cover moving expenses on our own until it's worked out with insurance. We pick a new apartment. Beverly comes home from work at 8:30, complaining of pain in her side. Go to hospital, after many hours and tests determine she also has a kidney stone and possible infection, they admit her. I can't stay because my snoring would keep her up anyway. I get home at 4:00 am, spend an hour cleaning my dog and then get two hours of sleep.
