Scenario Thread: 30 January, 2777 - Apocalyse Now

Soldiers of the Star League, I've a few words to say before we begin.  We've come a long way, my friends.  From the far Periphery to just outside home, we have fought battle after battle.  We've seen our enemy fall before us.  We've seen our friends die.  Now, tired, bloodied, and battered, we are about to enter a battle that many have said is impossible to win.  Perhaps they are right.  perhaps freeing Terra from the Usurper is humanly impossible.  If it is, I'm not worried.  I have long known that the men and women whom it has been my honor to command are more than just flesh and blood.  That they are more than the sum of their physical parts.  An unalloyed spirit runs through you like sparks in diamonds.  it is hard to put this into words but when I look into the eyes of even the lowest-ranked trooper, I see the Star League.  And I know that the worth of the Star League lies with the fact that it gave birth to and nurtured men and women like you.  Friends...it is time to go home.  Godspeed to all of you.

-Commanding General Alexander Kerensky's address to the assembled SLDF, 23 January 2777

The time has come.  You are about to embark upon a great crusade, toward which we have striven these many years. The eyes of the galaxy are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave brothers in arms, you will bring about the destruction of the Amaris war machine, the elimination of tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Terra, and security for ourselves in a free and liberated Hegemony.

Tonight is the night of nights.  Tomorrow, throughout the whole world bells will ring out the tidings that you have arrived, and the liberation has begun.  The hopes and prayers of your near ones accompany you, the confidence of your high commanders goes with you.  The fears of Stefan Amaris are about to become reality.

Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely.
Let us strike hard.  When the going is tough, let us go harder.  Imbued with faith in the righteousness of our cause, and in the power of our might, let us annihilate the enemy where found.

I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!
Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

30 January, 2777

The run-in to Terra has cost the SLDF 196 WarShips and 27 transports.  Eighteen complete divisions perished in their transports.  Some three hundred Caspar drones and two dozen Rim Worlds naval vessels tumble lifelessly though the Sol system, hulked wrecks.  Now you sit onboard your Mechs, green lights across the board showing your drop cocoon's readiness levels, and think back to the mission plan.

The 741st Strikers, 31st CAAN Marine Regiment, and remnants of the 149th Light Horse are all slated as "pathfinders", dropping onto Terra four hours ahead of the main assault in order to secure landing zones and suppress Rim Worlds defenses.  The 17th Army will be dropping into the Ukraine Administrative District, splitting their force between three primary targets: Kiev, Odessa (dropping near Mikolaiv and moving overland to that target), and Rostov-on-Don.

The 741st's mission is to cut the lines of travel between Kiev and Odessa. (the 31st will isolate Rostov and the 149th will serve as a picket force between Mikolaiv and Odessa).  Each battalion element of the 741st is given a section of transport lines to sever along the M-05 Rail Line and the E95 Highway.  Second Battalion (Delta and Echo Company) will be the closest to the enemy stronghold, severing the lines at the end of penninsula 46.652, 30.525 (GPS).  Defenders of Odessa are thought to include elements 422nd Amaris Cavaliers (reconstituted after their destruction on Dieron).

SCENARIO: Apocalypse Now

RULES

1) Battleground: The refugee area is composed of city and coastal maps, and is 3x2 mapsheets in area.

North
[][]
[][]
[][]
south

2) Deployment: The SLDF will hot-drop onto their choice of the two northern maps at NO PSR required.  The RWR Alpha Lance will start on either of the two central maps, with Bravo and Charlie Lances on the southern two maps.  The RWR Heavy Element will start on either of the two southern maps.

3) RWR units in range will be able to make a single attack against the dropping SLDF forces (whom are treated as jumping; all RWR units are treated as walking) as a pre-game action.

4) There are no further special rules for this scenario.

SLDF OBJECTIVES

1) Cut the Lines.  Destroy at least 6 hexes worth of road bridge hexes.  Each hex has a CF of 75.  Every additional hex destroyed will give +1 VP.
2) Destroy the enemy: Destroy Rim Worlds defending forces, prioritizing appropriate to their level of threat to the main landings.  VP is variable.

RWR OBJECTIVES

1) Destroy the Foe!: Destroy the SLDF.  Each unit destroyed gains the RWR 1 VP.  Each pilot killed gains the RWR an additional +1 VP.
2) Preserve the Lines.  The RWR will start with 12 VP.  Each road hex destroyed will subtract 1 VP from that total.

ALL EDGE IS REFRESHED, and ALL MECHS ARE REPAIRED.

More importantly, do we have a chance of running into abducted children?

Do we know anything about the 422nd Amaris Cavaliers?

The 422nd Cavaliers are a reconstituted unit of regimental size; the original unit was essentially wiped out on Dieron.  The SLDF's 12th Army rotated a full three Corps (II, XXX, LXI) through that planet.  The 422nd was wiped out sometime in January of 2776 by a series of concentrated LXI Corps nuclear weapon strikes as they attempted to maneuver from their cantonment to higher ground.

It is common Rim Worlds practice for there to be several complete companies stripped away from regiments of the same "class" within a Division to form the combat core of a new regiment.  There are typically between 3 and 5 of these companies, with the remainder of a new unit being made up by inexperienced troops (it's relatively easy for the other regiments to be able to replace a single company of MechWarriors).  Strategos give this to be the most likely probability regarding the experience level of your opposition.

The other possibility is that the 422nd has been reconstituted from the significant remains of other units that had fled back to Terra before the final invasion began.  In which case, it is likely that the regiment will fracture along these lines (so hypothetically, a single battalion of survivors of the 827th Fusiliers will operate as a distinct group, the 2 surviving companies of the 115th Cavaliers will operate as a distinct group, the single company of survivors of the 421st Cavaliers will operate as a group, and the miscellaneous mixed lances and individual draftees making up the remainder will not fight as a unit at all).

Traditionally, Amaris Cavaliers units are generally composed of the lighter-weight units available to the RWA, similar in mission profile to the SLDF's Light Horse units.  However, unlike SLDF units, which strive for uniformity (at least at the lance level), RWA Cavaliers units usually include a significant element of heavier units which are intended to form an anvil upon which the cavalry "hammer" can smash the enemy - which makes sense, given that the Regiment is considered the base fighting unit of the RWA, unlike the SLDF which considers the Brigade or the Division to be the base fighting unit.  However, it should be noted that since this is a newly-reconstituted unit, which full access to Terran manufacturing facilities, the sort of Mechs the 422nd may actually be fielding is in reality a complete mystery.
