Trials of Position are usually done as a sequence of fights.  To be counted as a Clan warrior, the warrior must defeat at least 1 opponent.  If you defeat 2 you start as a Star Commander.  If you defeat 3 you start as a Star Captain.  The 'Mech weight, opponent's skill or both goes up with each subsequent opponent faced.

I understand that part of the trial. For some reason I was thinking we were going to fight each other for those positions. I remember in one of the books there were multiple opponents all going after the rank. I can not remember however which book it was. I do remember that it was the clan warrior that helped lead the task force to the smoke jaguar home world.
