Maps
« on: October 02, 2018, 05:19:39 PM »

I have found the right material to print maps on, 8 mil polypropylene film. This stuff is about the same weight and thickness as heavy paper while being much tougher. It is mostly watertight and won't tear without deliberate effort. I'll bring samples to the big game on Oct. 20th. Overall cost looks like it will run at $5/map right now.

Revised cost/map is basically $7 after I verified ink usage across multiple maps. Ink is more expensive than ...

There are over 60 maps (list to follow). To organize them, I am using a pair of art portfolios (https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00009R8XD/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o07_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

Any recommendations for early maps to pick up besides ones being used in specific missions?

Reasons to select maps:

Art Style/usability
The Grasslands 1-3 maps are new and have an improved art style like the Desert 1-3 maps that makes it easier to identify light/heavy woods, water, etc. The Dig maps also fit in here with honorable mentions to the Woodlands, River Valley, Wide River, and Battleforce maps.

Scenario Based
Military Base, Seaport, and Drop Port maps are good picks if you want to run published scenarios, since they are in many of them.
Urban maps generally fall in here as well

Reasons to avoid maps:

Poor Art Style
Desert Mountains and Sinkholes, Moonscapes, and Deep Canyons.

Poor Balance
Mountain Lake

PITA to play on Note that these maps can make for interesting use in scenario design, but are not generally fun to play on IMO
Drainage Basins, Heavy Woods, Large Lakes 1, any Canyons

Niche Use
City Skyscraper and Box Canyon (also PITA, YMMV) generally.
The City Grid, CityTech, and City Ruin maps fall here as well since they practically require terrain hexes.
Some maps need larger play areas to be useful, like the Archipelagos, Large Mountains, and Coasts.

Out of curiosity, what do the original Battle Force maps count as or are they not used?

The battleforce map (the map came in the 2nd version so it's Battleforce 2) is compatible with the regular maps.

Hey, a whole mess of digital download maps from Mapmaster (in 18x22 even) are on sale for $2 each.  Are these printable from your rig?

As far as I can tell I got maps with both the BattleForce and BattleForce 2 boxed sets. So is the other map set not used?

I don't see why not. The only issue I would really expect is possibly needing to convert the file format, but that's eminently doable.

I have only ever seen BF2, so if the there is a different map from BF1, get it to me and I'll scan it and add it to the library.

Jon, I'm bringing my BattleForce Maps tomorrow.  There are 2 different maps from BF1 and then a single map from BF2.  Two copies of each from the box.

Also, Drainage Basins 1 & 2 are the same as River Delta 1 & 2.  You have them as 2 separate entries.

The 4 dig maps are free downloads not available as printed maps. Desert 1 and Grasslands 1 are flip sides of the same map and are new maps with the box sets. Desert 2/Grasslands 2 and Desert 3/Grasslands 3 are the same story. Militray base 1/2, seaport, Dropport 1/2, Archipelago 1/2, and Coast 1/2 are unobtainium.

I hadn't noted that the drainage basin and river delta maps are the same art. They do have differences in markings though. River delta has forest and water markings on each hex while drainage basin only marks clusters of wwods. I will have to think about which ones I prefer.
