William rubbed his eyes trying to refocus on the sensors and drone feed. For hours now ICE lance has brought up the rear as ordered keeping an eye out for things behind them and on drone feed. Both necessary for holding the door open for falling back units or adjusting entry into any battle if needed.

Boredom kicked in and he started to wander pushing for the nearest embankment overlooking the valley. Kicking his mech into an run, if you can call it that. His focus back to the feed surveying for the LALO DZ.

His mech in stride crested the hill, the view of the small rolling hills, lake, and shallow river banks below. A moment of awe and another brain numbing look at the dull drone footage revealed them finally.

Fedcom forces deployed on the flanks and forward center, while Ranger assets neared their center in columns. Looking on there was nothing a miss and looked to be a rather uneventful OP. Looks can being deceiving and the warning signs sudden with little time to prevent whatever is about to unfold. Radio silence from the shared coms channel raised an eyebrow and the subsequent fire made clear this was not a link up but an ambush.

Firing his jumpjets the mech lifted into the air hurling him toward the valley. He keyed in the emergency channel and then spoke.

"Send flash traffic to all commands. Crusher 1 is under fire from Fedcom units, I say again Fedcom units. Ice lance ETA under 30 seconds."

His lance pushed down in the same manner as he did and they entered the battle....

.....some time later

William barged into the holding room of one pilot. A guard grabbing him, holding on as he attempted to get a swing in but couldn't get close enough. Yelling at the man cuffed to the chair in multiple cuffs. A smile on the prisoners face.

"You traitorous beurocrats, all for the good of the Commonwealth. Be damned the cost of maintaining it or consequences. Half of our unit has ties to the Commonwealth and you just want to throw it away over a lordship squabble! Guess it meant nothing that we fought saving the Commonwealth and more against the clans."

Turning around he stormed out of the holding room and immediately made his way to the CO office. He knocked then opened the door after composing himself.

"Sir reporting for debrief but before we start. I am going to speak frankly. I will keep this as short as possible I and my lance members are very upset at this situation. We assume your squabble although not brought on by your own actions necessarily is what has led to this. The actions of the commanding officer are one thing and we are kind of in harms way at any given time. I get that and the dangers are inherent to the job but we feel these ambushes are not duty bound and obligatory to our contracts. This issue needs resolved and buried. I in no way am calling for change in leadership or abandoning friends. The lancemates are a bit more into the hazard pay isn't enough as is right now swing. Especially when we're full up and nothing to show for these little forays into danger. Also can we smack that smirk off that MIIO pilot in there. As far as the compensation I just suggest maybe a bump in hazard pay for these special cases. The new techs and the Awesome prior kind of helped ease my gripes."

Kato’s eyes are already on the door before it finishes banging open, and recognizing William his sidearm is back in its holster below the desk before William launches into his grievance.  He listens patiently, letting the venting run its course and William to catch his breath before responding.

“I can certainly authorize extra monies to be distributed as hazard pay for the remainder of the contract. Fifty thousand C-bills per month should be sufficient to ensure they’re properly compensated for threats above and beyond, agreed?  So long as we understand that it is indeed going into the pockets of the personnel and not general lance coffers.”

His expression isn’t accusatory but it is serious. “I would consider it inappropriate to more than double your salary, beyond that, how you distribute it is up to you.*. Personally I won’t be taking a dime of it, but as you so kindly pointed out, I appear to be the cause.”

He rises and walks the short distance to the window, his back for at least a brief time to William. After a few moments of staring out the window he addresses William though doesn’t turn. “I really dislike politics. It cost me a career in the AFFC, it’ll likely cost me access to my family on Epsilon Eridani and has almost cost me my life and that of my friends and those under my command.”

He’s quiet for a moment. “Despite all of the stereotypes of Capellan treachery and untrustworthiness, I have never experienced it. Oh, don’t worry. I’m not naive enough to believe there isn’t a basis for it especially between Chancellors Maximillian and Romano. My experience with the Confederation though has been one of respect, duty and service. The opportunity to earn my citizenship through service to the State, in my case helping those who were displaced and affected by the 4th Succession War.  It is disappointing though to see all of the warts on the Houses that have held themselves up as a bastion for good and honor. Initially I thought that limited to the Lyran half, but recent events on top of the actions of a particular General in the Capellan March show that’s not the case.”

He turns and looks at William. “There are plenty of fine individuals within the FC. I count you and the others with the Rangers among them.  As for my opinion of its leadership, that remains to be seen. As for resolving this particular bit of nastiness, I addressed the initial assassination attempt directly. I am willing to let this second attempt go quietly as a stupid mistake by some mid level bureaucrat. Should there be a third attempt I won’t be able to afford to let it go. I would let everyone here know and have the opportunity to do what is in your own best interests.  I have a family to think of after all.”

“Anything else you want to cover William?”

Will nods through much of the response Kato gives and states

"There is the debrief still but there are some clarifications on what I said. When I referred to outside of duty and contract it meant the scope of normal employment. As I stated I won't be leaving friends behind however. Sometimes lines can get drawn and sides picked and we dont need the machine breaking down. We are a solid unit. This was not intended as a jab or the like but a warning of possible issues we all may face. The matter needs to be buried but the intent was not necessarily that you can as they obviously took very little stock in the response to attempt one and now took notice on attempt two. This ball is in their court at this point. I decline payment and will wrangle them in but would request it simply be a discussion in the open with all members to avoid misconceptions. I will say I'm surprised at how this all started as the closest thing to the star league and still best hope of it is the same thing that targeted you over a baronship. I don't intend to renounce the Fedcom but at times an ideal is stronger than government. I worry in these cases that the government of man has lost its morality. If there is a third attempt we will cross that bridge. If day the unit will almost certainly not like it but being targeted as a whole for a throd time by MIIO will certainly make me rethink my stance."
