If I may throw in a real world point....  I have a private pilot's license.  A large part of my training was navigation.  After all what good is flying of you don't know where you are going?  I would submit that my character being an aerospace pilot could probably handle that.  Of course that's up to Rob.

In the full ATOW game, you get "packages" of skills representing training fields.  Everyone who goes through enlisted basic training, for example, gets "Rifles, Martial Arts/Military, Career/Soldier, First Aid, Navigation/Land", and 1 or 2 other skills.  Navigation/Land is a separate skill from areospace piloting; if you want to be good in that skill, you'll need to be trained in that skill - otherwise you're rolling against it untrained.  With that said, there are rules for related skills helping out that untrained roll (being able to fire a pistol doesn't make you good with a rifle...but it helps) that are in play.

If you want to be good at Navigation/Land, then you need to spend your XP in it.  If you choose to spend your XP into SPAs or custom Mechs, that's your choice - you have chosen to sacrifice being good at some skills for the ability to be a more awesome Mech pilot.  There's no dice to blame for a character here without a given skill or bad attribute, no pre-generated-ness from a vindictive GM or quirks of fate...your PCs are what YOU have made them, and if they don't have something you wanted, it's all on you.  ;)

Yes I did.  You still need to clarify your Connections Trait.

Secondarily, you may NOT install 9.43 tons of armor of any sort.  Half or full-ton lots only.  Heat Sinks as a modification is still something I'm thinking on (probably "yes", but LAMs are notorious hangar queens anyway and you may pick up a "free" Mech Quirk from the modifications).  I'll let you know in the next 24 hours.

Sorry, I had the fractional accounting button turned on....9.5 tons it is.  As far as the connections go I'm going to go "mild across a realm".  Please bear in mind I haven' seen AToW pg 111 yet.  By the way, is there a royal version of the PHX-HK LAM???

No problem.  Choose a realm.

And to the best of my knowledge, there are no Royal LAM variants.  Heck, I had to double-check against THB, TRO3025 and TRO3085 just to make sure double heat sinks were, in fact, legal equipment for LAMs to take at all.  On that note, you're going to have to nix the LAM's F/F armor - it's not legal LAM equipment.  No XL engines, Endo-steel, or F/F armor (source: TRO 3085, and check your PMs)

Backstory:

Born on Terra itself in 2738, Duncan Reed is a firm believer in both the Star League and Terran Hegemony.  Raised on tales of chivalry, adventure, and the glory of the Camerons, Duncan soon found himself dreaming of one day becoming a SLDF mechwarrior.  A combination of solid test scores and family connections landed him a place at the University of Proserpina.  Duncan had a very mixed record at Proserpina.  A natural affability and penchant for leadership allowed him to rise to a position of command in the university cadet corps, however a somewhat flippant attitude towards authority and love of general mischief prevented him from winning any real awards or prestige during his time at the university.  For his part, Duncan remembers his time at the University of Proserpina very fondly and will often recite stories of the pranks pulled off by him and his fellow classmates to anyone who will lend a willing ear and to a few people who won't.
After graduating, Duncan was placed with an SLDF unit where he had a largely uneventful early career due to the relatively peaceful times.  His skill with a battletech, combined with his CO's desire to be rid of him (Duncan was prone to displaying the stereotypical snobbery associated with graduates of the University of Proserpina during his early career), resulted in Duncan being offered a spot in the SLDF Gunslinger Program.  While in the Gunslinger Program, Duncan displayed a pronouncedly more serious attitude towards his studies, feeling that he was finally being instructed on "proper" combat techniques.
After completing the Gunslinger Program, Duncan was stationed  with an SLDF unit deployed in the Draconis Combine.  While in the Combine, Duncan gained an appreciation of the Kuritan people and culture for what he deemed their "martial spirit," despite being somewhat mystified by their love of melee combat (Duncan prefers fighting at a range and avoiding the "dirty business" of close range engagements).  Although the duels had largely subsided by the time he arrived, Duncan still managed to find himself involved in three duels against Kuritan mechwarriors where he obtained a record of 2-1-0.  His loss in his second duel humbled him significantly and resulted in him being scolded by his higher ups for accepting a challenge from a far older and more experienced Kuritan mechwarrior.  Quickly regaining his confidence, Duncan was victorious in his third duel against a more evenly matched foe.  However, his superiors became concerned by the rapid rate at which Duncan was finding himself engaged in duels.  Eventually, circumstantial evidence surfaced that Duncan was deliberately engineering scenarios in which Kuritan mechwarriors felt compelled to challenge him.  Although not solid enough evidence to warrant a court martial or formal reprimand, his superiors deemed it best if Duncan was transferred to a unit stationed outside of the Draconis Combine, thus Duncan found himself a member of the 741st Royal Striker Regiment stationed along the periphery border.
A last minute addition to the unit (sorry Rob), Duncan has not yet formed any connections with the men and women of his company, but is confident that his upbeat attitude and gung-ho personality will quickly win him many new friends as it always has (at least from Duncan's perspective).  Duncan is eager to see real combat as he feels that he has not yet been truly bloodied and properly tested.  A firm believer in the Star League cause, Duncan is appalled by the periphery's rejection of Star League rule.  Duncan, believing the people of the periphery to not be truly "enlightened and civilized," views the Taurian Concordant as an unruly child acting out against its parent; a child that must be disciplined and brought back into line for its own good.

edit: It appears my back story got consumed by the warp, so I reposted it.

Sticky TO&E has been updated.  Dan is still creating a character, will either end up as E14 or E33 (mentioned driving a Spartan).

A note on ranks:

Sergeant
(SGT) is the standard MechWarrior Rank.
Master Sergeant (MSGT) is for MechWarriors who aren't interested in command, but have been around for a while and established a veteran presence (sorry, Phil, the Star League doesn't have a "Staff Sergeant" rank, else I would have given it to you.  Still, it's a promotion, yeah?).  MSGTs will usually be lance leaders.
Warrant Officers (WO) are for experienced specialists.  Those people with this rank do not have "officer" powers in terms of being able to give orders; WOs are a higher pay grade to recognize specialized training.  Rowan is the communications officer, and Banzai has specialized cross-training in areospace operations.  Xin's level of Interrogation would normally qualify him, but in this case, it's not something the Star League is real keen on rewarding. ;)
Lieutenant (LT) is an executive officer for company commanders, and tend to be lance leaders.
Captain (CPT) is the company command position.

As always, we're not running strictly on a "I'm a higher rank than you so you have to do what I say" style of play; while accurate for a military, it's not fun for a game.  Be more egalitarian, and the CO (or ranking available person) makes the final decision.

Oh, for any painters out there who care:

The original SLDF paint scheme is solid Olive Drab across the entire Mech.  SLDF insignia (sideways star) goes on the left torso, and the unit number goes on the left leg.  Specific unit insignia or pilot's personal insignia goes on the right torso.  Unit numbers are usually white-on-black or black-on-white.  "Nose Art", if any, goes alongside the cockpit, or replaces the unit insignia on the right torso.  IIRC, Gunslinger badges and sundry go on the right torso or right leg.

I've edged the base of my Shadow Hawk in a medium earth-tone, so as not to take focus from the mini.  Essentially, it's this color:

Travis - quirks are fine.

Everybody - if you've got commentary on the TO&E or anything else, now's the time.  First mission briefing will go up later today.

Thanks.  I'm done with mine, other than some touch-up to the base and sealing, which I'll do tonight.  I didn't have any SLDF insignia, and I would still like to add that, so if anyone has a decal available let me know (willing to buy or trade).  I used green on yellow numbers (01), since that seemed the best fit between the two types I had, and I used a Heraldry shield on the right torso as a personal insignia.

I was surprised at the darkness of the OD (used Vallejo's USA OD Green).  I made a few attempts at hand-painting the SLDF star (on paper) and never got anything that looked both small enough and detailed enough, so I gave up and didn't attempt it on the mini.
