Gencon Gendiscussion

Howdy fellas,

How's things?  The mad scramble for Gencon registration made me want to holler at you guys and see what's up, see how many of y'all had Gencon plans, and all that fun stuff.

I'm still waiting on specific event/scheduling details, but I'll be running both of the adventures I wrote for Shadowrun this year (CMP Ancient Pawns and CMP Super Brawl Sunday), I just don't know exactly when yet.  I'll also be hanging out at the Shadowrun Missions Scramble (playing, I hope), and just generally hobnobbing and stuff with some of the other SR guys.  (Shameless plug while I've got SR on the brain:  My Way of the Adept e-book is out, so if you guys are looking for some optional rules to boost adepts a bit, hit up Battleshop or drivethrurpg and check it out)   ;D

I snagged a ticket for the Trial of Bloodright on Friday night, and bought myself in for all twelve hours of the War of Reaving on Saturday (can't make it all three days, but I figure being there for the finale is sure better than nothing).  A local buddy and I are already making plans to get in some weekly Battletech in the meantime, as we both try to get back into shape for it (I haven't found a regular game since moving here, so I'll need the practice)...looking forward to stompy robot fun again!

So which of you guys can I hope to run into in Indy?

Unfortunately, it looks like I won't make it this year.  Had a blast last year at the Scramble, which consisted of me paying another PC to guard me while I hid documents from another team.  I "hid" at battletech and got to see a certain nuking....
Anyway have a great time

Yes, your way of the Adept is supurb.  I am just afraid to bring it up to Rob (my character already one shotted a queen).  Great job on the book.

I'm already rummaging around my closets to try and find things that can pass for costume parts.  I'll be snagging some elf ears in the vendor's hall, I'm sure, to top it all off.  LARPing at Gencon lets me scratch the itch and do so while I'm surrounded by strangers instead of folks whose opinion can matter in the slightest -- so there's plenty of room for hamming it up, faking an accent, and generally not caring how silly a costume looks.  Win/win!

Sweet!  Glad you like it, man.  It was my first pitch to the powers that be, and I'm hoping the fact it's going over pretty well will help me out in the future, if/when I've got time to try and tackle another e-book solo.

My wish with it is that folks will take their currently uber-specialized adepts (like those who can one-shot a queen ;) ) and that "loosening the collar" a little by cutting them a break on those powers they've specialized with will give them the opportunity to branch out and generalize a little, or will encourage them not to dip into some bioware for the quick fix, or what-have-you.  There's room within my rules for an uber-specialized adept to just uber-specialized some more and totally sling ridiculous handfuls of dice...but since they're optional rules, I'm hoping people will take the sane approach and just make a competent character instead of a hyperspecialist.  There are so many awesome little adept powers that folks never give a second glance to, I'm hoping a few bonus points here and there will let folks experiment and have some fun.

Well, I'll see you guys that Friday night, then!   ;D  Planning on showing up for the War of Reaving at all, on Saturday?  Or maybe a "What's up with CGL" seminar or something?

Probably not.  I, at least, am looking at demoing Leviathans pretty much the whole con, except when I'm on ToB.  There's just not enough Agents who are familiar with the game to allow me to do much else.

My big thing will be trying to go play with the NERO Chicago guys again, so I have the opportunity to hit things that AREN'T munchkin CBT players...   ;)

I'll be there too. I didn't sign up for any BT events though I have enough gaps in my schedule that I hope to fit in a Grinder game or maybe a Leviathans demo. I tried a Canon event once years ago but it was such a zoo that I swore off them. But I always like to spectate on those events and check out the awesome mini diorama.  I didn't try for Shadowrun but it's been years since the one game I played and most of the listed events required some experience. I did get a ticket in one of the few
Rifts game so I was happy to get that.

I'm terrible with remembering names, faces, and forum names, but you are the Wolfhound guy that clobbered me all the time, right? How's school?

I've been writing my (Shadowrun) adventures with new players as well as "some experience" players in mind.  I can't speak for every volunteer GM that's gonna be there, but for myself -- if someone shows up and there's room at my game table, I'm not gonna turn them away for being new to the game.  I've purposefully been including new gamers into my playtest runs through my adventures, in fact, to go ahead and account for the inclusion of a learning curve.

So, long story short, if you wanna play a little Shadowrun at Gencon, play a little Shadowrun.  If the experience requirement continues to throw ya, feel free to look for a "Welcome to the Sixth World" session, which will be a brief adventure and also walk you through character creation...an intro-to-the-game session, basically.  But if you happen to see me getting ready to run a game, don't be scared to show up with a generic ticket, 'cause I'll gladly make room for a new player.

*laughs*  Yes, that would be me, I suppose.   ;D  School's going great, thanks.  Wrapping up my second semester of grad school, clinging tenaciously to a 4.0 so far, studying abroad in Edinburgh this summer...and this very afternoon, I'm heading up to campus to handle some paperwork for what will hopefully turn into a teaching-GA position in the upcoming academic year.  Not too many complaints!

My old DnD group used to say that pun damage was 2-5 points, so everyone give me a 4 sider and add 1!

While I'm (vaguely) on the topic of the Trial of Bloodright, is there somewhere we can get a look at the format/layout of the event?  How it actually works with a couple of gamers hanging out slinging dice, not with a couple vat-bred Clan warriors out for blood?
