Paul, you beat me to it.

Gentlemen, as per AR below, getting a specific chassis must be paid for with xp at creation.  For random assignments, general preferences can be discussed resulting in a small group of choices from which the pc can them choose.

Clarifications and Errata

How are starting Mech Assignments determined?
-Assuming you don't have a Trait that affects what you can take, you will be assigned a Mech to pilot that takes advantages of the skills and abilities your character has, just like a real soldier.  This Mech assignment may change depending on the needs of the service, or what is available in the event that your Mech is destroyed, but rest assured you will always have a Mech to pilot.  Be aware that you are generally veteran MechWarriors of a ROYAL BattleMech unit, and thus will have relatively bad-ass Mechs to play with regardless.  You will not, during the course of normal events, be assigned -3R Stingers or that Shadow Hawk with all of 3 tons of armor.

What happens if I own a Mech and it gets blown up?
-You have paid for your Mech with character points, and thus it is considered a part of your character.  As soon as verisimillitude permits, you will end up with your ride again (your custom Flashman gets cored, so the SLDF assigns you a new one and your Tech re-customs it).  However, if you are in a situation where logic would dictate such an event to be difficult-to-impossible (say, being airdropped behind enemy lines), you'll get what's available, and get your custom machine back when you rejoin the main force and have the chance to get the re-customizing done.

Ok, all.  Looking for feedback on Kharlan.  The Tactical Genius ability only works if you're the C.O. so investing in it is a bit of a risk.  If I switch skills up to an A priority and Talents down to a B, I can do the following:

Improvements
Dexterity 5 (+1)
Added Weapon Specialist: Gauss Rifle
Gunnery 6 instead of 5 (+1)
Strategy 3 instead of 2 (+1)
Career: Solider 2 (Added)

Worsened
Willpower 3 (-1)
Piloting 4 instead of 5 (-1)
Lost Tactical Genius (Needs another 100 XP to get)
Don’t get to choose my Mech

Go from a P/G of 3/3 to a P/G of 4/2 + Gauss Specialist.

After I'm guessing about 4 sessions I'd have Tactical Genius if I do end up being the C.O.  The Combat Sense is still useful in any case.  Which do you think is the better choice?

The more I think about the change, the more I think that's the right thing to do.  Anyone see any serious issues with the changes I'm proposing for Kharlan?

I've been working on developing my first ever PC.  Here is is what I have come up with.  Please let me know if I made a mistake.

[60] Champion 1Nb – 5/8/0 – Gauss Rifle, ER PPC, Std Engine
[60] Lancelot 01 – 6/9/0 – PPC, 2 LL, 1 ML, XL Engine
[60] Lancelot 01sl – 6/9/0 – 3 ER LL, 1 ML, XL Engine, added armor and DHS
[60] Lancelot 01X – 6/9/4 – PPC, 2 ER LL, 1 ML, XL Engine
[65] Exterminator 4Db –6/9/6 – ER LL, 4 ML, 1 SL, XL Engine
[70] Excalibur B2b – 5/8/0 – Gauss Rifle, LRM 20 w Artemis, AMS, XL Engine

Given your Sniper SPA, I tried to make sure you had a direct fire weapon with at least a range of 18.  The Champion doubles up with a GR and ER PPC with a Standard Engine, though it is only 60 tons.

As for names, if you have any preferences from the original 20 clans let me know and I or someone else can post some suggestions.  Kharlan is a Clan Wolverine bloodname.  Steve's said that the Clan we'll be in hasn't been decided yet though.

As for skills, I think you'll need to have at least some level of Career/Soldier which you could potentially swap out for Computers or Medtech.    Steve would need to confirm that though.

Is there a time frame that I can enter into Solaris or Heavy Metal Pro as a filter to look there also?

If you use SLDF 2750 those are certainly safe.  The Exodus happened 2784 if I recall correctly.  Any mech that rolled off the assembly line before that is technically possible.  The Grasshopper I believe rolled off in 2780 so rare, but possible.  It's only 4/6/4 but a nice mech.  I had the dates added in the background thread I posted for suggested reading.  You might want to check there.

     Into Darkness is a Cincinnati Battletech campaign that chronicles the birth of the clans from the Exodus through Operation Klondike and [maybe] beyond.  The player characters are members of the Star League Defense Force or their families that accompanied General Kerensky on the Exodus.  Each player may create up to two characters, primarily mechwarriors, but aerospace fighter pilots and vehicle crews are acceptable.  If the player has an existing character in the Apocalypse Rising campaign, that character may continue [bearing in mind the effects of age].  Character creation will follow the format laid down in Apocalypse Rising with minor tweaks to be found in the thread "In the beginning."
     Characters will begin campaign scenarios with their "Trials of Position" on the world of Stranna Mechty in 2807.  So with that in mind, characters who are choosing specific mechs, etc to pilot and paying for that privilege with xp at startup must choose units available prior to 2807 [not including units that were created in the Inner Sphere between 2784 and 2807 (examples of which include Flashman-7K, Wasp-1L, Zeus-5S and Valkyrie-QA)].  The list can be found in the MUL using the "production era" filters of "Age of War" and Star League."  If using Solaris Skunk Works, simply sort by the production "year" column on the "select mech" page.  As noted in "In the Beginning" there is an additional xp cost for choosing heavy and assault class vehicles.  For aerospace fighters and vehicles, I will treat the tonnage categories the same as battlemechs.
