Internet Problems
« on: September 22, 2010, 01:47:01 AM »

Hey everyone, I've been having a lot of internet issues over the past week.  Until I can get these resolved, my activity on this forum may be highly limited.  I should be able to get to a friend's house or coffee shop every other day or so, but until this skirmish with Time Warner Cable gets resolved expect it to take a couple days for me to notice any new announcements.

My internet is currently down (I'm posting from a friend's house right now), was down all day Thursday, Monday, and Tuesday, and was on and off for all of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.  Everything has power and all of the computers hooked up to our network can all communicate with each other, but nothing has any sort of connection to anything outside of the house.  One of my friends who does computer stuff for a living (she's had a combination of tech support, IT, and programming jobs) walked me through some troubleshooting today and she's 90% sure that the issue is from hardware problems on TWC's end with a small chance of my modem being the source of the problem.  Of course, TWC's tech support is "pretty sure" that the issue is with my router, which is the one thing that I'm positive is not the source of the problem and no effort on my part has been successful of convincing them of this fact.  I'm planning on picking up a new modem from TWC tomorrow on the off chance that it is the modem and if that doesn't work then I'm probably going to yell at TWC more until I get a not retarded answer out of them.

Replacing the modem is the right first step - without the account number etc, there isn't too much more I can do - but a good step is to have that modem sitting isolated with nothing connected to it, call into TWC and have them check it.  And have them beat the crap out of the line, paying attention to the power levels..I bet they're too low for the modem to keep a solid signal.

Well, I'm now back online.  It turns out that TWC was having problems in my area last week (thus explaining no internet last thursday and weak internet over the weekend) and that my modem apparently died monday in a death that was completely independent of TWC's issues.
