You can indeed.  Trait points can be used to buy up Attributes, buy off negative traits, or increase the values (or purchase outright) positive traits.

Is edge attribute points the actual amount of edge I would have?

Yes.  If you end with an Edge Threshold of 4, and spend 6 points to give yourself Edge 5 (1 point per point up to 4, 2 points for the 5th point), then you'll start the game with Edge 5.  Which means 5 rerolls.  MW3 characters can have high Edge scores.

It's also happened during the character creation examples, but you can BURN (as in, lose permanently; you'd have to buy it back with XP during game play using the "raising a trait" costs) a point of Edge to reroll the Mech result for one member of your Lance.  Once only.

Ok, just to be clear, the Edge I "spent" during the lifepath stuff... was that expenditure reducing my Threshold, or reducing my total after I buy Edge with trait points?

On skills I received, during live path rolls, a +2 to any three military field skills and another that is a +2 to three basic training skills, is there a list of what these skills are related to these groupings?

Can I use these to start my mech gunnery and mech pilot skills?

There's a list of what skills are in what field in the "Important Resource Links" section of the character creation PDF.  "All Occupational Fields".

When you get a field, you get all the skills in that field, and you gain +3 to each of those skills.  Basic Training is a field, so when you get +2 to 3 BT skills, you can choose 3 of the skills in that field and add +2 to them.  When you gain +2 to any 3 military field skills, you can choose any military field which you already possess or which you access during that stage, and add +2 to those.

What that means is that if you have not previously recieved - or you don't recieve - a Military Field which includes Pilot/Mech or Mech Gunnery skills during the Stage where you get "+2 to any three military field skills", then you cannot use those +2s to boost Piloting or Gunnery

NOTE THAT SUB-PATHS ARE PART OF THE STAGE.  If you're at a military academy, you will have to go through an AIT sub-path, which is where you'll get a MechWarrior Occupational Field package.  If your "+2 to any three military field skills" occurs from a Stage 3 static bonus or a Stage 3 event roll, you can still use them on skills in the MechWarrior Occupational Field.

In my life path stage 3 I went to Lyran Military Academy /Coventry and took mechwarrior AIT and stage 4 life event I qualified for Special Training.  Second set in skills of the Special Training sub path says "+1 to half of the character's AIT skills (rounding up)".  In my AIT the skills are listed "Skills: Add +2 to three Basic Training Skills, +2 to any other skill, Rifles +1, Pistols +1, Survival +1, Tactics +1".  Do I have 9 skills in my AIT that I divide in half round up to add 1 to or do I have 4 which are actual listed skills?

In my sub path for special training the it has "Fields: Special Forces (minimum BOD 4, RFL 4, MechWarrior Field required, may not have TDS Trait)".  In the Occupation pdf it has a Special forces catagory but it is infantry.  Do I use this for skills from this or is there one I'm not seeing for a mechwarrior?

Trying to figure it all out before March 6th deadline. ;D

so not only do you have Add +2 to three Basic Training Skills, +2 to any other skill, Rifles +1, Pistols +1, Survival +1, Tactics +1, you also have the mechwarrior field as well.  Check the five skills in that field, and make sure you took a +3 to each of them when you went to AIT.

The special forces field is skills you gain at +3 for going to special training.  Its points that will go int your special pool, so be sure to add those 21 points to your totals.

Posted a question in the rules thread, but probably should have posted it here instead. Feel free to move it.

MOVED

Changelog  - 2/22/17
-Corrected "every 3rd skill point" to "every 2nd skill point"
-yes, really.  The cost for raising bonuses from +3 to +4 is much higher than I remembered, and forget about going beyond that.  The point isn't to start everyone's PCs out at 5/5s.  Chalk this up to not having doing in-depth to MW3e chargen in close to a decade.

Did you update the rules doc with this change? I was checking the rules thread since I was about done and realized that maybe this note meant my free pool should have more skill points.

No.  I'm holding off on updating the rules doc till about 6 March, so that issues people are finding can all be added instead of having to repost and reupload the whole document every time 1 thing gets clarified.

Basically, treat the Changelog as a temporary Errata listing; it'll be posted when a new version is uploaded, so once that happens, ignore everything above the "new revision uploaded" post.

I'm building a character sheet in Excel, but I wondering if I need to include all the stuff on the original character sheet. Will we ever be tracking stuff like Fatigue, personal armor, hit locations on the mechwarriors body, etc? If not, I'm going to replace those sections with more useful info, like quirk descriptions, etc.

Heck no.

Petty much everything you need to have is on the character "sheet" at the end of my character generation thread.

Rob,
Your character has Custom vehicle (2), I understand the custom part, but how does the vehicle (2) part work to get you a heavy mech?  I thought to get a heavy one needed vehicle (6) or use trait points to get up to vehicle (6).  Am I missing something or just screwed in the head.  Little overwhelmed trying to keep everything straight. :)
