Anyone need a computer?
« on: August 08, 2017, 07:20:26 AM »

I have a couple of computers I will be getting rid of soonTM. If anyone has particularly decrepit rigs, let me know. Most of these computers were top of the line configs in their day. I would rather give them to people in the group than send them to recycling.

Oldest is a i7-920 with a Radeon 4970 and Intel X-25 160GB SSD
Newest is a i7-3770K with Radeon 7970 and SSD

Many of the computers have multiple additional HDDs and are built in full tower cases.

Also some misc. cases, mostly mini-ITX.

My desktop is coming up on a solid decade of life.  My hard drives are coming up on 13 though that's just to see how well they hold up

I'd like to chime in here.  I'm looking at getting a rig for Eli so he can use Sibelius music editing software.

Before anyone calls CPS, no, after the intial download/activation, it wil not be connected to the internet.

Well, there went my weekend plans.  (I kid, I kid...) I think my current battlewagon is roughly equivalent to the 920.  I can always retrofit it, see if I have a spare HDD and that war rig can become Elis (After I take the casters off it of course)

That is not necessarily true.  What - specifically - are you running?

I7 3770K to I5 4690K is a lateral trade at best.

I found an Intel X-25M 160GB SSD that you can have. It's a SATA II 3 Gb/s drive 250 MB/s read and 100 MB/s write. It will generally be an improvement on most HDDs in everything except write performance, where a modern 2TB+ drive will have better sustained write speeds. It is still good, but not the rock star it was back in the day. (Seriously, this was like a $400 back in the day and just smoked the 250GB HDDs of the time.)

Only if I disassemble the 3770K machine, and that would be its primary/OS drive. That would defeat the purpose.

Also, keep in mind that unless you are doing sustained writes, like transferring large files (video), the write speed isnt a huge problem.
An SSDs big advantage is ridiculously low seek times. A 3.5 inch 7200 RPM HDD, the most common desktop hard drive configuration, takes between 11 and 15 milliseconds to find a file before beginning transfer (or writing). An SSD, even one as long in the tooth as an X-25M, has a seek time of about 0.1 milliseconds. That means that for cases of many small files, like during boot up and program loading, the SSD has opened the file before the HDD can find it. Another key point is that until the SSD is about 85% full, you will continue to get 100 MB/s. An HDD slows down as you fill it up, because the disk is effectively moving slower the closer to the inside edge you get. So it is quite possible/likely you could see better performance even though writes are only 100 MB/s.

Another point to consider is that unless you are reinstalling your entire operating system, you wouldn't be running your operating system off of the SSD. I assume you would use it as a game install drive for steam or stand alone installs. In that case the only time the write speed would come into play would be during game install. So, as long as you play games more than you install them...
