I thought I sent him a pm yesterday, but today not only was there no reply but also there was nothing in my "outbox". I took this to mean it didn't send, so I sent another message. Still does not list it in the outbox. Does this mean the message isn't sending.

It will only show in your Outbox if you check the option to save a copy in your Outbox. The default is to not save outgoing messages.
