Rob's Project Thread
« on: May 09, 2011, 02:39:40 PM »

With the volume of crap I end up painting, it's probably easier if I just do a single thread and tack new stuff onto it.

So, here's what I've been working on for the last month and a half...note that I don't have a photo studio set up yet - pics are taken using ambient light and the camera flash only.  Ack.

These pics are the Blood Spirits that I've been working on for this year's Origins Canon event.  I was slated to do 30 minis.  When I opened up the boxes, there were 60 minis.  Surprise!  I've gotten 40 of them done so far and I'm waiting on the last Mongoose to be delivered so I can batch-paint the rest of them.

While I was waiting on the last few Blood Spirits to be delivered, I figured "what the hell", and started work on some more-or-less "generic" minis to use as OPFOR for future home campaigns.  This company was done start-to-finish in 25 hours, and is painted in Taurian Guard colors.

I'm also starting on a Battalion of minis that will be done in simple Olive Drab, to be used as OPFOR or allies as events warrant.  Having a bunch of "generic" minis can only help us at this point.  Just got done with the basecoating today - hopefully they'll be done by 21 May.  Pics will follow once they're done.

Finally for today, a few snaps of my SLDF Shadow Hawk for the Apocalyse Rising campaign.  Again, no photo studio, so the photo-fu sucks, but my new camera goes a long way toward making even a crappy setup (on the floor, in the sunlight, with a camp sleeping at as a backdrop) look half-way decent.

(The artwork on the right leg is that of Colonel Jansfield's daughter, and a large part of why Callahan was the "Enemy" trait. ;D  )

Those really look good Rob, excellent work.  It amazes me how many you can get painted so fast.

I can't believe you preempted my posting of pics of my Toro in the same Taurian Guard scheme.   :P  Glad I picked a scheme that will go with your OpFor.

I'm still working on the pics in Gimp, trying to improve the photo-fu...

edit:  Forgot to mention, I really like how you've done the searchlights on the mechs that have them.

One last comment, I'm amazed at the number of unseens you're willing to devote to a Taurian force.  You really have entire suitcases of unseens stockpiled away don't you?  :)

I'm with everyone else, I don't know how you can crank out so many nice looking mechs. I couldn't keep up you if I was spraying painting them. The wash on those Blood Spirits looks great and brings out the details really well. Those cockpits are very vivid and the transitions are nicely done, too. Great and voluminous work there!

I try to make my mech selections for forces representative of the Mechs in that faction.  As it happens, the Taurians really only produce Unseens; they make VERY few other Mechs (which is why they have so many units in Project Phoenix).  This is one of the reasons why I'm so vehemently against retconning the Unseen out of the game; the Periphery nations are totally dependent on them for vast swathes of their TO&Es.

And, to be fair, most of those are plastics, whether from the 3rd Ed Boxed Set or the Intro Box.   ;)

Remember that battalion of OD-colored Mechs I've been working on?  Yeah, they're done...plus a couple of custom jobs for Brent and Brett.

Again, just straight-up shelf photos with ambient light, no touch-ups.

Those look good Rob, nice work getting so many of the old plastics in shape for regular use.  I have a feeling that your pics aren't doing these justice; look forward to seeing them on the table.
