Backlog Reduction Oath
« on: May 15, 2012, 03:21:33 PM »

So, recently I started playing a little LoTR SBG, since my daughter seems to enjoy it more than Battletech. I really enjoy the system, although so far we've only played a few starter scenarios.

Long story short, it led to a whole round of buying various LOTR SBG miniatures on ebay. When added to my current stash of BT minis, I can't help but notice that I buy minis at a far greater clip than I ever get them painted. I'm fairly sure it hasn't escaped my wife's notice either. My backlog is even more ridiculous when you consider that I've probably completed less minis in the last year than Amalor Myrnnyx does in an average week.

So, I come here today to make my version of the Backlog Reduction Oath, also seen in various forms around gaming sites as the 'painter's promise' or 'gamer's pledge'.

I promise to only purchase new miniatures when I have completed twice as many miniatures from my backlog.

Current Backlog (incomplete minis count as unpainted until finished):
Battletech
286 Unpainted Mechs (45 painted)
135 Unpainted Aerospace (2 painted)
43   Unpainted Vees (0 painted)
LOTR SBG
136 Unpainted (6 painted)

I'm not including BT infantry or BA totals above, as they'd just be a pain to track; however, each completed base will count as one completed mini against the backlog. Same rule applies to micro-scale ASF's. All completed minis will be posted or linked in this thread, and all mini purchases will likewise be listed here. This Oath will be in effect until my backlog is reduced to less than 100 minis.

Now, who wants to join me?!  ;D

Current participants:

Name.. Completed Minis..Purchased Minis..
Bryan..17 Completed..3 Purchased

First, I can't believe that you have a count of minis. I have no idea how many, too many; especially if you talk to my wife.
As far as taking the oath. I can take it, but; it won't happen. I can't stop buying and I don't paint as fast as some. So I will never keep the oath. I don't mind the back log.
I can get a count and post, maybe tonight.

I have 232 painted, 150 unpainted not counting vehicles and inf.

Well, maybe I'm displaying some OCD tendencies, but I tend to keep a spreadsheet of all my minis. This helps me keep track of what I've got and what I still want to buy.

You can take the Oath, Phil, you can do it!! Of course, you can also customize the Oath for yourself, if you'd rather do a 1-to-1 or something. It depends on how satisfied your are with the speed of your output versus your expansion.

Make whatever backlog-related oath you want in this thread and I'll track it in the first post. The real point of the thing is to provide some motivation for getting some models completed.

Yep, spreadsheets.  The only way to go (I have 2).  There is a saying going around....You can't die until ALL of your mini's are painted ;D

starships............................320+
fighters (mostly fleet scale)...428+
mechs........................about 50
tanks.........................about 40
infantry (BA)........................78

how many painted since last year's Gencon = 1  :-[

I'm afraid to actually count all of the unpainted (and in some cases unglued) Battletech, Warhammer, Flames of War, and Starship Troopers minis that I own.  I'm currently trying my best to not think of the fact that I probably won't obtain a large enough apartment in the next few years to house all of my gaming stuff before my parents decide to sell the house and move.

I could probably make a reasonable guess when I get home.  I suspect outside of a lot of the newcomers, my collection is probably the smallest.  I suspect Bryan has more unpainted Btech minis than I have *total* between Btech and Warmahordes.

My oath will to be to continue to paint as fast as I can, realizing that I will always have minis to paint. I don't ever want to be caught up.
Updated my previous entry with totals.

*points at Bryan*

HAHAHAHAHA!

Never, ever going to happen.  I'm down to about 200 unpainted BT minis, and it's still never going to happen.  With the BT stuff, 400+ War of the Ring minis, 220-ish Legend of the Five Rings minis, 200+ misc fantasy and sci-fi RPG minis, a 3000-point Warhammer Dwarf army, a 2500-point Warhammer Brettonian army (etc, etc, ad inifnitum, ad nauseum)...if I took an oath like that, I wouldn't buy another mini until Elessar was in Junior High School at least, and college at worst.

Good luck.

Not true! You can keep buying as long as you've completed twice as many as you buy. So, want to buy 5 mechs? Paint 10 mechs first! No problem for you, I've seen you turn out a battalion over a weekend.  :D

You didn't think my timing of this oath was completely unplanned did you?   ;D

I had only to seal these and get photos today: http://forums.cincybattletech.com/index.php?topic=335.0

So, that's 4 minis painted so far. Yay!! I'll update my numbers at the top. Now, I've got 4 Ringwraiths to knock out real quick. Might as well grab the 'low-hanging fruit' first, right?

Steve, you posted totals, and seemed to indicate that you needed to do some painting as well. Are you in?
John, no need to count the size of your backlog if you don't want to, you can just post completed minis and purchases to participate.
Phil, are you going to post completions and purchases? I wasn't clear on if you're in or out.
Dan, you probably still have more completed minis than I do. I've got far too many sitting in tiny baggies, hidden in boxes, so my collection isn't doing me much good.

No, I am not in on the oath. I won't keep it. I will continue to buy faster than I can paint.
Oh, found 4 more painted last night.

Alright, I've painted 5 Ringwraiths and 1 Twilight Ringwraith, all finished by this morning.  I'll post pics up this evening sometime. Had a great time painting these, and I'm very happy with them. I'm motivated to knock out a battlemech or two now!

That makes 10 minis painted, 0 purchased so far.

Last week has been good. In addition to painting up a half-dozen ringwraiths, I also worked on a RWR Unseen Locust. I'm not updating the totals above just yet, as it's not "complete" (needs basing, sealing, and number decal) but I should be able to add it tonight. I'll be finishing up some of my other WIP mechs as well for the RWR, so I can get them off my queue.

I did also make one mini purchase: 3 Uruk-hai w/crossbows. It's been almost 3 weeks, and so far I've held to the plan: 10 complete, 3 purchased

Update: Completed the RWR Locust, including hand-painted logo, basing, numbering, and sealant. Also completed the final touches on my RWR Thunderbird, but I had previously marked that one as 'complete' so it doesn't count. I'm going to keep finishing these RWR minis that have been WiP's up til now. sadly, I had also marked the Jackrabbit complete, but it's not, I had only completed the Kyudo. Updating all numbers in the first post.

Finished Aragorn, I'll try to post up some pics tonight.  Updating numbers - 13 finished, 3 purchased.

I'm also about halfway through my entry for the Iron Painter 2012. Something about the scheme I chose is giving me pause. I wanted something that was eye-catching, but right now everything just looks too flat. Maybe I'll try a wash and then pick up highlighting from there. I hope I can make it work, because while I wouldn't mind stripping the paint, I'm worried it will eat the glue and force me to put the thing back together which I'd really like to avoid. I just don't know though. If I'm not liking it better after a wash, it's getting dunked.

So what is everyone else painting? I'm assuming Phil is painting for GenCon diorama, Steve may be painting for his own GenCon game (doing one this year?), and Rob is likely painting for GenCon canon games (but maybe that's all been done since Origins).
