Gen Con 2012
« on: July 06, 2012, 04:22:55 PM »

So, about 10:30 pm on June 30th, I purchased my badge for Saturday.   ;D

I plan to drive in early with the family on Saturday, and spend all day at Gen Con while they visit whatever else is fun to do in Indy; and then we'll all buy a Family Fun Day badge for Sunday, so they can check it out as well.

Anyway, from things I've been reading around the interwebs, it's good to go with a plan in mind because there's just so much to do. So, my general plan is this:

Saturday: either 1 or 2 BT canon events, and maybe some time at the auction or dealer hall (is there also some sort of swap-meet section?), also maybe some sort of workshop or seminar
Sunday: find some good game demos for the whole family, find a couple game demos for myself, and spend a great deal of time in the dealer/exhibit hall (what time will this be open on Sunday?)

Things that I want to possibly buy:
1) CGL faction dice
2) Maybe Leviathans.. still trying to decide whether or not I want to buy a $100 game, when I've already got so much invested in BT.
3) GameScience dice
4) Whatever surprising book release CGL announces, or possibly a past release

Demos I want to hit:
1) Star Wars X-wing
2) Leviathans (Honestly, I need to play it again, which might help push me one way or the other)
3) Tour Art Show

I'm tempted to do some painting classes, but wow are they all expensive! Then again, it's not like I can sign up for a local class for painting minis. Also, thinking about trying out a speed-painting competition. Seems like there's quite a few different ones available, with championship rounds on Sunday. Those are cheap and only last an hour so that might be fun.

So anyway, please chime in with any suggestions or comments. Let me know if there are some things that should NOT be missed, and perhaps where/when to find the best deals. I haven't bought any event tickets yet, but it seemed like the Saturday canon events had plenty of tickets left so I wasn't concerned about it selling out.

I can't steer you any way, since I have never been. Plan to be there Thurs. morn and stay until sometime on Sunday. Will probably let things fall as they happen. Not to sure of my comitments to CSO, but I definitely will be getting the dice and some publications. Couple of minis, Omega and possibly the jumping Atlas.

I'm certainly going to get my fill of Btech this year.  On Thurs. I'm running 3 games of Btech space battles.  Friday has a Btech Card Game Tourney and the Trial of Bloodright.  Sat has the Btech Open Tourney (I haven't played in this one since Milwaukee) and Masters and Minions.  I hope I can get to the exhibitor hall on Sunday.  I usually get something for the girls, but I have no idea what  :-\

I have made it to Gencon every year since I got out of college (this one will be 24  :o )  I haven't got a hotel room yet.  I was leaning toward the Red Roof on the south side.  I hate to ask this but does anyone have a spare bed for sharing expenses?

If I was going to be there on Thursday, I'd definitely sign up for one of your space battles. Sorry, can't offer a bed, since I'll have the whole family with me. Maybe next year we can split a room, although I'm a horrific snorer.

Where do you guys put the odds of Interstellar Ops being released at GenCon?  They like to hit us with something unexpected usually, right?

Okay guys, I have a reservation for a king + queen room at the Motel 6 on the South side of Indy Wed-Sun.

Wed 39.99 + Thurs 45.99 +Fri 55.99 + Sat 55.99 = 197.96 + tax (17%) + parking downtown (80)

4 people in room adds 12/night.  [max inc parking dntn for 4 ppl = 367.77]

Unfortunate about the rising rates for the weekend, but this is not a bad deal overall.

Andy, let's see what you can come up with....  I can always cancel this.

No, I have not.  But I have generally had good luck with Motel 6's.  This one has an outdoor pool!  It can't be worse than that dive that Expedia stuck me in last year. >:( >:(

I will also check on the Red Roof that is near to this Motel 6.

The Red Roof on the south side (Victory Dr or something) has 2 double beds for 4 adults for $298.30. [plus 80 parking = $378.30].

More money, smaller beds, no pool.

Motel 6 works for me.  Who's in?

I'm kind of iffy on whether or not we can get another agent into the room (due to arrival times during the con). I'd LIKE to carpool up, if at all possible.  Dan, I can't remember - do you have a room yet?  Is Rose coming?

Carpooling up should be no problem here.  Since I'm running btech space games instead of ground games, I won't have to lug all of my Geohex terrain with me this year.  My Camry should be able to hold a bunch.
