Choosing weather and other conditions
« on: September 09, 2016, 08:58:56 PM »

Alright, so the forces I m most drawn too is a Finnish force..  The issue becomes purchasing ski's for all my troops.  So how is weather determined?  Dumping snow is almost required for my force to show how scary it is, but it has the potential to make a very negative play experience for certain otheer types of forces (ie highly mechanised forces bog down in snow quick).

So how is weather determined?  Would I know beforehand, so I can put ski's or not on my infantry?  would it be blind, so I am potentially using 40+ of my points on something that would be pointless?  How would this be handled?

Never had weather for any of the scenarios that I have played. In version 1, there are no allowances for weather. It is not brought up. Night fighting I believe is dealt with in that visibility is limited. Makes fighting the Japanese a little more dicey, as they liked launching their attacks at night.

I know that the BA Ohio guys run a variety of big group scenarios.  We can always check and see if they've got something stashed away from an old Moscow or Continuation War game.  Or did you find the snow rules in the book with the Finns in it?

I think it would be fair to say that you'd know before hand.

So apparently snow from what I can find reading the book turns the entire board into difficult terrain.  Its super confusing, as having skis allows you to ignore "snow and other winter conditions"  but I have not found an easy list of these things.  Perhaps in the soviet book?  On to more research.

Ok, so full winter weather is brutal.  Not only do unit treat all ground as difficult terrain, but also you can potentially apply the frostbite rule.  After deploying a unit, make a moral test.  Loose a troop for each unit you fail or vees are immoble for x turns.

I knew I should have chosen North Africa as my preferred theatre.

How do weather effects get chosen in a battle? Is it a random roll or something?

So there are not rules as far as I can tell, just discuss with your opponet beforehand.  Or spend 50+ points on weather stuff?

The rules for snow is in the "Ostfront" book. Also includes rules for frostbite.

Ordered the book this morning, says it may be here next Monday.

Oh, good.  I've assembled all of my Desert Rats, but I'm holding off basing the weapon teams until I see the rulebook.  I'm concerned that there's going to be specific basing requirements now (it tends to go along with use of templates, which are now a thing in BA as of 2nd edition), and I don't want to have to re-base something I just based.

Going from the new starter set, it looks like the minis are using the same bases that they came with before, so 25mm rounds.  Grenadiers in the band of brothers set are the same as the ones as the grenadier box I got, and the mini sprue itself has some of the bases attached so I'm pretty sure that at least hasn't changed.  If you've got spares of those its probably safe to base on them.

I'm talking in terms of crew-served weapons.  Putting the gunner and a loader on the same base is very different from having them on 2 bases.  Or in the case of my 6-pdr AT gun, that's like 4 crew.

(I'm using 25mm washers for basic infantry anyway, so I can use a magnetic carrying case)

I'm kind of wishing I had based on washers as well, just because those are the flimsiest bases I've ever seen. Oh well. They'll probably be a little better once I get basing material on them.

Yea, that's odd. I mean why would your opponent agree to snow when all his stuff would be bogged down by it, and potentially even lose stuff on deployment? So then why even have units that DO better in snow, such as ski troops? It seems like more of a fluff thing I guess. I mean it's a "historicals" game, but it's not like we're always (or ever?) going to be fighting historical battles. It will be more random-type stuff.

In your position Mike, I'd bring the ski troops list, but have another Finnish list ready to go if there's no snow, using those points somewhere else.

In a pdf. that has night fighting, it has a 1 thru 6 chart to roll for a different scenario. So the possibility of a night fight is there. I would guess if it was winter, a snow scenario would be rolled for. Will comment more after receiving the book with the snow rules in it.
As most scenarios that are fought, it is up to each player to bring his army based on points with what he wants. If you don't have any weapons capable of anti-aircraft the player that might have air would then get his plane on the table. If you build your force with out much anti tank, then the player that brings some armor would have free run of the field without much worry. All on how you build your force for that day.

I'd imagine, especially with this group, that we'd have some sort of theme for the day if not full (possibly team) scenarios.  So to start a few games that are just all comers 'normal' rules.  And then we'll have the battle of the bulge/moscow/the alps/etc for one week, tunisia/odessa/etc the next, etc.  So every game is heavy snow, or sand and heat, or night, or mountains, whatever.  We're not running competition, these are just shooting little plastic mans with other little plastic mans games.  And if you've got a list that you really want to try with skii's, or german night vision gear, or the like, talk to your opponent.  We're all friends here :D
