It's up the Unit CO if he wants to assign somebody to this mission; there's no penalty for failing to do so.  Otherwise, he'll probably take volunteers, but be aware of deployments into regular missions, since there's a TON of missions happening all at the same time here.

This is a SOLO mission: one Mech deploys.  Not one Lance.  One Mech.  On the bright side, this is a potential 5 XP for a single pilot, and 3/5ths of the way towards Ace status.

As with most of the other special missions, the OPFOR units are placeholders and actually only get rolled once you commit to a Mech weight class.  Likewise, rerolls and so forth will appear once a unit has been committed.

Barring excessive damage in RUNNING HORSE mission 5, I am going to strongly consider my Firestarter for this mission. It will keep the Opfor mechs light and make it a bit more likely to pull off the sweep by turn 8.

Anyone have any better ideas?

I can get my Cicada fully repaired before the 2nd or barely pushing into the 2nd if need be.

Your Cicada is a good back up. The difference in TNs between your Cicada's 4x MLas and my Firestarter's 4x MPLas will make a big difference in applied damage. Especially when everything on the board is mobile enough to get right in somebody's face.

Does the pilot matter? I am assuming yes.

You are considering putting your PC pilot in with Weapon Spec MLas, I assume? You would end up with the same TNs (Pulse vs. WS) and trade a bit of damage (4x6 vs. 4x5) for range. You would add Melee Spec over my base Firestarter pilot. However, if I throw my PC in we are back to the exact same place with my PC adding Melee Spec and having higher tactics and edge for better bonuses on init rolls.

Keep in mind that the Firestarter may get shot up during Mission 5. It is by no means guaranteed that I will be playing this one.

If this is like the other special missions, where its based off the players mech weight, would that mean all 3 of the opfor for me would be 40T mechs or one being same with the other two being a chance of lower?

You are correct.  Since I personally hate the way it does that (AtB always seems to select the worst person in the lance), I'm changing the selection procedure.  I'm reading it as the lance in question is unassigned instead (compared to the other Special Missions where they're assigned to a lance from the beginning).

However, like other special missions, the OPFOR Mechs will have a chance of being customized, depending on the qualitity and cheesiness-levels of the assigned player's Mechs.

If this is like the other special missions, where its based off the players mech weight, would that mean all 3 of the opfor for me would be 40T mechs or one being same with the other two being a chance of lower?

All three of the OPFOR would be Medium Mechs, though IIRC it rerolls if the weight disparity is very large.  I've done this a couple of times with a Victor, and I've never seen an OPFOR bigger than 90 tons.  That doesn't mean it's impossible for my Victor to see a King Crab; it's just more rare.

Who all has had special missions so far?
I know Reaper, Skaraborg and Freya Lances have had a special mission. Am I forgetting anyone?
