Character Generation Questions
« on: February 21, 2017, 08:20:38 PM »

1) I know you can spend edge to enter a path not on the exit list.  What about paths that you can only enter with a roll?  For example, my character is attending the Siam center for martial disipline, and I do not roll the events to go to OCS, but I rally want to go.  May I spend a point of edge to enter OCS or do I need to keep rerolling to try and get the event?

2) multi-level traits.  I know we are running a simplified system, but it looks like in some cases the stacked level matters in others it doesn't.  In a specific example, lets take bad reputation.  After my lifepaths, my capellan has bad reputation (5) (he is cappie after all).  Does this mean: a) I get -10 to all attempts to Scrounge when I need to make a check? b) I go consult the table in the rpg book, find out that I have a bad reputation sphere wide, and take a -2 everywhere?  Concurrently if I reduce it down to say 2 do I choose the region of space where I have a bad reputation or does thee GM assign that and I record it for future gms?  c)  I must spend trait points to reduce it down to bad rep (1) to avoid complex interactions?

3) I know you have talked about a possible "unit specialization" getting you a point of edge at some points Sat.  Was this dropped?  Is it still a possibility, and needs more evaluation time?

Paths and Subpaths are different things, and Edge only allows you to access "paths" you're otherwise unqualified for.  Unless your path exit allows you to go through OCS, it's only accessible via rolling on the lifepath table. Basically, you have to either roll it, reroll into it, or use edge to adjust your roll value (absent an FAQ or errata of which I'm unaware).

The relevant rule is on pg 25.

Generally speaking, the penalties won't stack in severity, but they absolutely will in terms of area.  If you're in the "area of influence" to such a trait, you'd take the -2 penalty.  So if you somehow get Bad Rep 5, yes, you're going to get the -2 penalty in pretty much the entirety of known space.  When you have such a Trait in a smaller area, then you'd need to note the appropriately-sized sub-region (Lyran Commonwealth; Crucis March, Outreach).

I'd recommend STRONGLY not starting with Bad Rep 5.  Spend Trait points to bring it down to at least a Successor State.  Also, don't be a terrible person.

That was for Wingmen only, and it's been dropped.  There were XP interactions regarding sacrificing that point of specialization edge in order to get a "free" 2/3 Light Mech pilot into an Assault Mech, which isn't in line with pretty much any semblance of good game design.  The Wingman classification lock and requiring XP to reclassify puts a MUCH more solid break on everyone going All Assaults, All The Time.

Im getting a bit confused on this at this point

im seeing you guys rolling d10 early yet im reading event tables as 2d6

also where would a list of military academies be? Do they provide certain bonuses / negatives or is that just fluff from example character?

If you'll look through the Lifepath PDF linked to in the character creation guide, there are lifepaths on both 2d6 and 2d10.  It's a chronological thing; early published lifepaths were 2d6, ones published later are on 2d10.

The Lifepath document also includes all of the military academies for which there are academy-specific paths which do have differing mechanical effects on the characters (though the event charts are the same for all the academies of a specific faction).  Basically, the following academies have lifepaths:

FedSuns:
Albion Military Academy
Armstrong Flight Academy
Filtvelt Military Academy
Kilbourne Academy
NAIS College Of Military Sciences
Point Barrow Military Academy
Robinson Battle Academy
Sakhara Academy
Tikonov School Of Military Discipline
War College Of Goshen
Warrior’s Hall

Lyrans
Alarion
Bolan
Buena
Coventry
Nagelring
Pandora
Royal New Capetown
Sanglamore
Thorin

Capellans
Capella War College
Liao Conservatory Of Military Arts
Sarna Martial Academy
Sian Center For Martial Disciplines
St. Ives Academy Of Martial Sciences
Victoria Academy Of Arms And Technology

Dracs
Sun Zhang

Mariks
none

Canopians
n/a - Canopian Institute of War is a path, but the school doesn't actually exist yet

Marian
n/a - Collegium Bellorum Imperium is a path, but the school doesn't exist yet

Outwords
Columbia Academy

If you want to go to an academy not on this list, use the generic "Military Academy" path.

Note: this happened this way because the Field Manuals for Dracs and FWL both were published during MechWarrior 2e RPG, and so lifepaths didn't exist.  Them MW3e came out, and we got the rest of the Field Manuals with Academy paths in them.  The later Handbook series is ATOW-compliant, which doesn't include lifepaths.

Press the Dice icon on the Post Reply page, and it drops a tag that looks like this:

[ roll ][ /roll ] ...without the spaces

Then insert the roll you're looking for, such as 2d10, or 2d6.

Rolled 2d10 : 10, 2, total 12

This dice roll has been tampered with!
Rolled 2d10 : 10, 2, total 12

FYI, if you quote a post with a roll in it, or try to edit the original roll post, there's a big red "THIS POST HAS BEEN TAMPERED WITH" message.

Also, I've been having a terrible time actually getting the roll to display.  I'm having to refresh the page 10, 20 times to see what I got.  I dunno what's up with that.

[2][10]

Click "new post".  You see all the little buttons above the smiley faces?  The last one on the right is a die (underneath "change color"). Push it.

Between the two pairs of brackets which pop up in the text field, write the die code you want to roll.  Just type "2d6" without the quotes, and you'll get a 2d6 roll.

I started my character last night and didn't think to screenshot so at this point I have a generic all 2d6 one mostly made or I can go back to the academy stuff since there was more than what I realized and start from there or am I going to be required to TS and screenshot all rolls from now or start all over

I do like the way rolz looks never seen that one will end up using that I think

Handle it how you'd like.  IMO, the easiest way would be to reset to the end of Stage 2 (since Stage 1 and 2 don't change), and just redo from Stage 3 onward now that you know there's academy options.

that's what I ended up doing. The benefits/risk are higher to go to NAIS but the rewards in traits and skill are better

ive run into a small issue on my character

he received promotion 2 to start out then made it to ocs training got commission 1 then got a promotion later to rank 6 then an additional promotion 2

how does this work at this point

do I technically have 10 promotion plus the commission?
