General Discussion / GenCon 2023
« on: July 19, 2023, 12:29:09 PM »
What up, geeks?  Long time no chat.   :D

Anyone going to be at GenCon this year, and looking to hang out and/or catch up a little?  Or got any cool games that should be joined with generics?

Right now my con schedule's pretty wide open, it's my first year back since covid hit and I'm looking to mostly be pretty chill and sociable instead of always just scrambling from game to game.  I'm doing a few signings and interviews and things (still working for CGL, lots of SR fiction and now doing a little BT!), but other than that I'm looking for a pretty relaxed con.

I'm still planning on being there, especially since I already bought my badge. The bad news is that  I haven't booked a single event yet, so still wide open.
One year I want to try that.  Just show up without a plan, and see where GenCon takes me.  Let the convention lead me to cool stuff, breeze around without a care in the world or any need to be anywhere at any particular time, and just kind of hobo around the joint, seeing what looks cool.  Invariably, though, I panic and tell myself "GenCon will take me to the stuff I liked playing all the years before!  Ack!  Buy game tickets!"

But one year...one year.
Do you plan to play in any of the canon story-line events?
At the moment, I don't, but I've got a great big stack of generi-tickets ready to go, to see what I can get in on.  I went out of my way to leave a couple big time slots open, thinking I'd get corralled into running some Shadowrun stuff, and then...well...they had a bunch of other GMs sign up, and I ended up not getting booked for a single one.  If I'd known that was gonna be the case, I probably would'a jumped into more BTech, but as it was I was trying to leave time to run stuff for the people that cut me a paycheck.  ;)

Which reminds me -- while I'm on the subject of paychecks! -- if anyone remembers the old Syndicate and Syndicate Wars games, check out this Kickstarter for Satellite Reign.  The KS proper just locked up today, but they're still taking PayPal from slacker-backers, and every dollar helps.  It's gonna be a pretty wicked game, in my opinion, and I'm very glad to be on board doing some writing for them (and potentially lots MORE writing for them, if budgets allow):  http://www.twitch.tv/5livesstudios/

Hey fellas,

How's GenCon falling into place for y'all?  I've got tickets to the Trial of BloodRight (fast becoming a GenCon tradition for me), and -- to the surprise of utterly no one -- the Wolf vs. Wolf-in-Exile game.

My Saturday's pretty wide open, though, if anyone wants to try to grab a meal or spend a handful of generic tickets on a game or something.  Unless I get hauled in to pinch hit and run a few SR games last minute, I've got pretty much all day to kill.

Yeah, it has been getting a lot of attention on BT forum. Nice to hear from you.
I just heard about it yesterday from a teacher friend of mine, and immediately thought of you guys.   ;D  I should'a known other Battletech fans would've been all over it.

I thought you guys would get a kick out of this article:  http://www.theage.com.au/national/education/history-transformed-in-vce-exam-20121114-29ce7.html

Long story short, a VCE exam for 12th graders used an...interesting...image of the Russian Revolution:  one with a Marauder rampaging in the background of Kochergin's "Storming the Winter palace on 25th October 1917."

It's a pretty awesome pic.   ;D

General Discussion / "Neat," new Shadowrun e-fiction released
« on: November 15, 2012, 06:21:49 PM »
Hey fellas, hope y'all don't mind me spreading the word a little bit.  They just let me try to kick-off more Shadowrun fiction with an e-novella that launched over the weekend.  So far it's been doing pretty well, and hopefully the trend will continue (so they'll want to publish more).

"Neat" follows a classic hardboiled PI type (with his own Shadowrun spin), and reviews have been overwhelmingly positive thus far (including a few that have made overt comparisons to Chandler and Hammett, which is awesome, and one that called me the inheritor of Nigel Findley's legacy, which was even more awesome).  I'm not just beggin' you guys to buy it because you're some gamer buddies, but because folks have enjoyed it and I think you guys would dig it, too.

I know several of you follow SR and not just our beloved giant stompy robots game, so if you're interested, or if you're curious (it IS just $3, so Shadowrun noobs can give it a shot!), please go pick up a copy, leave a review or rating, yadda yadda yadda. :)  Every sale helps, but every review really helps.

Amazon link is here: http://www.amazon.com/Shadowrun-Neat-ebook/dp/B00A5GSSLC/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1353021437&sr=1-1

You can find it at BattleShop here (I'm sure some of you have store credit or something from them): http://www.battlecorps.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=28_187_222&products_id=3066

Or you can snag it from Drivethrufiction (where it's bumped off Monte Cook for the #1 spot!), here: http://www.drivethrufiction.com/product/107953/Shadowrun%3A-Neat

It's appreciated, fellas!  Hopefully the dice are treating you well, you're all having a good time, and you'll dig the story if you check it out.  Thanks!

While I'm (vaguely) on the topic of the Trial of Bloodright, is there somewhere we can get a look at the format/layout of the event?  How it actually works with a couple of gamers hanging out slinging dice, not with a couple vat-bred Clan warriors out for blood?

I didn't try for Shadowrun but it's been years since the one game I played and most of the listed events required some experience. I did get a ticket in one of the few Rifts game so I was happy to get that.
I've been writing my (Shadowrun) adventures with new players as well as "some experience" players in mind.  I can't speak for every volunteer GM that's gonna be there, but for myself -- if someone shows up and there's room at my game table, I'm not gonna turn them away for being new to the game.  I've purposefully been including new gamers into my playtest runs through my adventures, in fact, to go ahead and account for the inclusion of a learning curve.

So, long story short, if you wanna play a little Shadowrun at Gencon, play a little Shadowrun.  If the experience requirement continues to throw ya, feel free to look for a "Welcome to the Sixth World" session, which will be a brief adventure and also walk you through character creation...an intro-to-the-game session, basically.  But if you happen to see me getting ready to run a game, don't be scared to show up with a generic ticket, 'cause I'll gladly make room for a new player.

I'm terrible with remembering names, faces, and forum names, but you are the Wolfhound guy that clobbered me all the time, right? How's school?

Nate
*laughs*  Yes, that would be me, I suppose.   ;D  School's going great, thanks.  Wrapping up my second semester of grad school, clinging tenaciously to a 4.0 so far, studying abroad in Edinburgh this summer...and this very afternoon, I'm heading up to campus to handle some paperwork for what will hopefully turn into a teaching-GA position in the upcoming academic year.  Not too many complaints!

So which of you guys can I hope to run into in Indy?

Well...I'm running the Trial of Bloodright, so...

And I'm running it with you...
Well, I'll see you guys that Friday night, then!   ;D  Planning on showing up for the War of Reaving at all, on Saturday?  Or maybe a "What's up with CGL" seminar or something?

Unfortunately, it looks like I won't make it this year.  Had a blast last year at the Scramble, which consisted of me paying another PC to guard me while I hid documents from another team.  I "hid" at battletech and got to see a certain nuking....
Anyway have a great time
I'm already rummaging around my closets to try and find things that can pass for costume parts.  I'll be snagging some elf ears in the vendor's hall, I'm sure, to top it all off.  LARPing at Gencon lets me scratch the itch and do so while I'm surrounded by strangers instead of folks whose opinion can matter in the slightest -- so there's plenty of room for hamming it up, faking an accent, and generally not caring how silly a costume looks.  Win/win!

Yes, your way of the Adept is supurb.  I am just afraid to bring it up to Rob (my character already one shotted a queen).  Great job on the book.
Sweet!  Glad you like it, man.  It was my first pitch to the powers that be, and I'm hoping the fact it's going over pretty well will help me out in the future, if/when I've got time to try and tackle another e-book solo.

My wish with it is that folks will take their currently uber-specialized adepts (like those who can one-shot a queen ;) ) and that "loosening the collar" a little by cutting them a break on those powers they've specialized with will give them the opportunity to branch out and generalize a little, or will encourage them not to dip into some bioware for the quick fix, or what-have-you.  There's room within my rules for an uber-specialized adept to just uber-specialized some more and totally sling ridiculous handfuls of dice...but since they're optional rules, I'm hoping people will take the sane approach and just make a competent character instead of a hyperspecialist.  There are so many awesome little adept powers that folks never give a second glance to, I'm hoping a few bonus points here and there will let folks experiment and have some fun.

Howdy fellas,

How's things?  The mad scramble for Gencon registration made me want to holler at you guys and see what's up, see how many of y'all had Gencon plans, and all that fun stuff.

I'm still waiting on specific event/scheduling details, but I'll be running both of the adventures I wrote for Shadowrun this year (CMP Ancient Pawns and CMP Super Brawl Sunday), I just don't know exactly when yet.  I'll also be hanging out at the Shadowrun Missions Scramble (playing, I hope), and just generally hobnobbing and stuff with some of the other SR guys.  (Shameless plug while I've got SR on the brain:  My Way of the Adept e-book is out, so if you guys are looking for some optional rules to boost adepts a bit, hit up Battleshop or drivethrurpg and check it out)   ;D

I snagged a ticket for the Trial of Bloodright on Friday night, and bought myself in for all twelve hours of the War of Reaving on Saturday (can't make it all three days, but I figure being there for the finale is sure better than nothing).  A local buddy and I are already making plans to get in some weekly Battletech in the meantime, as we both try to get back into shape for it (I haven't found a regular game since moving here, so I'll need the practice)...looking forward to stompy robot fun again!

So which of you guys can I hope to run into in Indy?

Dammit, now I want to run a giant crossover melee full of Earthdawn Adepts, Shadowrunners, and Mechwarriors against a bunch of angsty Werewolves and skinny Goth-kid Vampires.

I've only got my 4th edition stuff in pdf, all my 1-3 is in sweet, glorious, hardcopy form...and, stacked atop each other, is over 5 feet tall.

Part of the packing/unpacking process was me organizing our game books to be boxed up, and then for fun comparing the height of each stack of books to my wife -- organized by company -- to see which one scored highest on the Felicia-o-meter.  Our combined World of Darkness won out, but largely because it was a ton of Vampire and Werewolf stuff (plus a little Mage, Wraith, and Changeling), it was my and her collections, and because so many of their books are swanky, and thick, hardcovers.

For some reason, I did Earthdawn, Battletech, and Shadowrun all separately.  Even not counting boxed sets, my FASA/Catalyst stack would have stomped White Wolf's ass, if I'd done it right.  Suffice it to say I've got quite a few well-loved, dog-eared, old SR1 and SR2 books.  ;)  Shadowrun was my first RPG, ever, and it shows on my bookshelf.  Hell, SR's how I met my wife.  *grins*  So while I'm sure you don't need it, the offer stands, is all I'm sayin'.  If you just want to kick ideas around, you can get ahold of me.

Rusty (in spirit at least - sorry man  :-\ )
Hey, I can still offer emotional/canon/lore/whatever support, as needed.  I'd pit my SR collection against...well...anyone's, anywhere, actually.   ;D  Just PM me if you have some obscure background questions or anything, man, or to pick my brain for horrible, monstrous, unholy, things to do to the poor, unsuspecting, bastards -- err, I mean, players.

It's nice to see you on the forums around here Rusty!

Texas is awesome isn't it?  Screw Herb.
Thanks, man.  Yeah, the Lone Star's been great to me so far.  It's been fun seeing some of it from a motorcycle, too.   ;D  Great roads for riding on, that's for sure.  And yeah, that whole...thing...over at CBT just kind of rubbed me the wrong way.  Oh well.  I'll keep laying low for a while, yadda yadda yadda, and won't be submitting any fiction to 'em any time soon, I guess.

Presumably the same Critias of DSF fame?
Yup, that's me.  And over on the Privateer Press forums, and Glocktalk, and...yeah.  I try to use the same user name everywhere I go, and tend to have good luck about it not bein' taken yet.  :)

Back to smartlinks/cybereyes:  Personally, I don't see how someone with contact lenses or cool sunglasses can get those other smartlink bonuses.  I guess one could argue that a "mental command" could be sent via contact lenses if you blink your eyes three times to eject the magazine from your smartgun, or something...but how do you do it with goggles, or glasses, and would the GM then have you start switching your firing mode, dropping your magazine, or firing your gun whenever something made you blink?  ;)

It's a "common sense" ruling on my part, but I only let folds with implanted smartlinks get some of those little extras.  The heads-up display on goggles can sure tell you how much ammunition is left in a magazine, let you do the guncam thing, and displays where the gun's pointed (to get you that +2 dice)...but I don't see how it lets you change from semi-auto to burst-fire.  I'll readily admit that it's only MY take on things, and that my take doesn't matter in this conversation since I'm not even playing in the game -- just sharing my thoughts, is all.

I do want to point out that the mage with cybereyes is nothing new to SR4, or 4A.  Mages have always been able to -- if they so choose -- dabble in cyberware, and be able to cast spells through most implanted cyberoptics (they paid their Essence and earned their boost).  Given how attributes are payed for in 4th, it's not as good an idea as it used to be...buying the extra-steep "6" in Magic only to then knock it down a peg just so you can see in the dark isn't always a great trade-off.  I like Mages having the option to make that trade, and I don't think it's that that makes them potentially overpowering.

I think it's more just...well...the nature of direct combat spells in SR4, and the declining dangers of Drain from edition to edition.  It's worth pointing out, also, that in the long run I think Possession traditions are potentially quite a bit more game-breaking than direct combat spells, but that's a different ball of wax entirely.  I don't think you guys will run afoul of some of the munchkinny douchebaggery the way other groups might, but it's still stuff to keep an eye out for.
